Claims priority, application Great Britain July 8, 1952 6 Claims. (Cl. 229-41) This invention relates to cartons, and has for its object to provide an improved form thereof.
In accordance with the invention, a six sided carton is formed by folding a blank along a series of parallel, spaced folds; to form the ends of the carton which are of substantially regular hexagonal shape, two pairs of end panels are used, each pair of panels being folded from the blank until they lie at right angles to the plane of the sides and with the panels of a pair spaced from each other. When the sides are folded, at each end one pair of the panels enters between the panels of the other pair, whereby the ends are securely held. A further fifth end panel can be used to form part of a lid closure, as will be apparent hereinafter.
Further features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of one embodiment thereof. This carton is intended to receive a stack of pieces of confectionery of circular, disc-like shape. In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a plan view of one embodiment of carton blank;
I Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the made up carton blank;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a further embodiment of carton blank; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of yet another embodiment of carton blank.
The carton is formed from a blank which is shaped as shown in Figure l of the accompanying drawings. This comprises five panels, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, which form five of the six sides of the carton, the sixth side being left open in the finished carton to permit the contents to be seen. Two small edge panels 6 and 7 merely reinforce the free edges of the panels 1 and in the finished carton. The blank is conveniently scored along the lines defining the panels, to facilitate folding.
The two ends of the carton are similarly formed, though reversed, and only the end shown at the upper part of the figure will be described. At the end of panel 1 is a panel 8 which is hexagonal but for a slightly curved left side, a short panel 9 which is approximately rectangular, an irregularly shaped panel 19 and a rectangular panel 11. At the end of panel 3 is a hexagonal panel 12, a short rectangular panel 13, a further hexagonal panel 14 and a further rectangular panel 15. Panels 11 and 15 are joined by a panel 16. From the end of panel 5 is a panel 18 of which four sides are the sides of a regular hexagon, the two remaining sides being replaced by a single curved side. The curve is circularly arcuate and is centered on the apex at the opposite side of the hexagon.
To form the carton, the straight strip formed by the panels 11, 1d and 15 is brought over until it lies over the area marked 19. To do this the carton is bent through a right angle at the score lines which separate panels 1, 8 and 3, 12; 8, 9 and 12, 13; 9, 1t and 13, 14; and 10, 11 and 14, 15. All these bends are in the same direction. The strip 11, 16 can be glued to the area 19 if desired, in
which case the blank can be pressed fiat in this condition for storage or transport. The blank shown is primarily intended for forming into a carton without glueing. It will, of course, be understood that both ends of the carton are formed in the same way.
When the ends have been turned up in this way, panels 8 and 19 are both at right angles to the plane of panels 1 to 5, and are spaced apart by the width of panel 9. The panels 12 and 1d are similarly upright and in space parallel relation. By bending the blank about the scored lines between panels 1 and 2, and 2 and 3, the panels 8 and 9 are inserted between the panels 12 and 14, and the bending about the scored lines is continued until panels 8 and 9 lie wholly within panels 12 and 1d. The insertion of the panels 8 and 10 into the space between hexagonal panels 12 and id is facilitated by the curvature of the edges of panels 8 and 10 as shown. Moreover, the curve on the edge of panel 8 is so chosen that it tends to lock the panels 8 and 10 in position between the other two panels, this curve engaging the underside of panel 13 in the folded carton.
When both ends have been folded in this way the carton can be filled and then panels 43 and 5 folded up. Panels 18 are inserted between the now adjacent panels 3 and 12, and the carton is then as shown in Figure 2. A transparent wrapping can be applied to the complete carton.
The user can remove the contents by pulling on the finger grip formed by a cut 22 and partly withdrawing panels 18.
If panels 11, 16 and 15 are not glued to the area 19, arcuate cuts 23 can be made as indicated in Fig. 3. The edge of the strip formed by these three panels can then be caught under the tongue formed by this cut.
The panels 8 and 10 can be made completely hexagonal if desired, as shown in Fig. 4. in that case the blank is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. l but fold lines 24, 25 are provided in panels 3 and 1-3 which facilitate the insertion of the panels 8, 10 between the panels 12, 14. The provision of these fold lines permits the reduction of the dimension between the apices of each of the panels 8, 10. In addition, small panels 26 are provided which form masking panels held in place by the side panel 5.
I claim:
1. A carton made up from a single blank of foldable material, said carton having a part tubular body comprising a series of side-by-side conjoined wall panels, at each end of said body a hexagonal closure panel joined to one of said wall panels and normal thereto, a spacing panel coupled to said hexagonal panel, normal thereto and extending inwardly therefrom, a panel joined to said spacing panel and normal thereto to lie parallel to but spaced from said hexagonal panel and an auxiliary end panel joined to another of said wall panels, normal thereto and extending between said hexagonal panel and said panel coupled thereto and beneath said spacing panel.
2. A carton made up from a single blank of foldable material, said carton having a part tubular body comprising a series of side-by-side conjoined wall panels, at each end of said body a hexagonal closure panel joined to one of said wall panels and normal thereto, a spacing panel coupled to said hexagonal panel, normal thereto and extending inwardly therefrom, a panel joined to said spacing panel and normal thereto to lie parallel to but spaced from said hexagonal panel, an auxiliary end panel joined to another of said wall panels, a second spacing panel coupled to said auxiliary end panel, normal thereto and projecting inwardly therefrom, a further panel secured to said second spacing panel, parallel to said auxiliary end panel, said auxiliary end panel and said further panel lying between said hexagonal panel and said panel coupled thereto and said spacing panel secured to said hexagonal panel engaging an edge of said auxiliary end panel.
3. A carton made up from a single blank of foldable material, said carton having a part tubular body comprisand said further panel, said auxiliary end panel and said further panel lying between said hexagonal panel and said panel coupled there-t0 beneath said spacing panel secured to said hexagonal panel and said bridging panel engaging said wall panel to which said hexagonal panel is secured.
4. A carton according to claim 3 including a tongue in said Wall panel to which said hexagonal panel is secured, said bridging panel engaging said tongue.
5. A carton made up from asingle blank of foldable material said carton having a part tubular body comprising a series of side-by-side conjoined wall panels, at each end of said body a hexagonal closure panel joined to one of said wall panels and normal thereto, a spacing panel coupled to said hexagonal panel, normal thereto and extending inwardly therefrom, a panel joined to said spacing panel and normal thereto'to lie parallel to but spaced from said hexagonal panel, an auxiliary end panel joined to another of said wall panels, a second spacing panel. coupled to said auxiliary end panel, normal thereto and projecting inwardly therefrom, a further panel secured to said second spacing panel, parallel to said auxiliary end panel, and a locking panel extending from a further wall panel, said auxiliary end panel and said further panel lying between said hexagonal panel and said panel coupled thereto and 'to said second spacing panel, parallel to said auxiliary 7 end panel, and a bridging panel extending between said panel coupled by a spacing panel to said hexagonal panel beneath said spacing panel secured to said hexagonalpanel and said locking panel extending between said hexagonal panel and said auxiliary end panel and beneath said spacing panel secured .to said hexagonm pane-l.
6. A carton made up from a single blank said carton comprising a series of five side-by-side wall panels, at
