2 clzims. (cl. 155-169) This invention relates to furniture and particularly to an adjustable ottoman capable of `Vertical and angular adjustment for the ottoman users comfort.
The conventional ottoman has a horizontal surface and is not adjustable either in height or in the angular inclination of its upper surface. Accordingly, the size of the ottoman chosen must depend upon the height of the chair with which it is to be used, as well as the posture and dimensions of the user. Use of an ottoman for protracted periods of time which does not provide for inclination for the legs may result in muscular fatigue. This invention contemplates an ottoman which is not only adjustable in height, but is also adjustable in angular attitude to provide a variety of different angular attitudes and vertical elevations.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide an adjustable ottoman.
lt is another object of this invention to provide an ottoman which is adjustable both vertically and angularly about an axis transverse to the legs of the user.
It is another object of this invention to provide an ottoman which may be locked in a plurality of different positions of adjustment,
It is another object of this invention to provide an ottoman which is simple of adjustrnent and convenient to use.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the invention,
Fig. 3 is another sectional view of the invention,
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the invention showing optional positions of the ottoman,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the invention taken at 5-5 in Fig. 3, and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the invention taken at 6-6 in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings and in particular to Figs. l and 2, there is shown a framework for an ottoman including side members 1 and 2 and ends 3 and 4. The usual upholstery and covering have been omitted from the drawings for the sake of clarity. It is seen that side members 1 and 2 and end members 3 and 4 comprise an open topped box, which may or may not be closed at the bottom by bottom member 5. Hinged to the interior upper extremities of end members 3 and 4 are end extension plates 6 and 7 attached to end members 3 and 4 respectively by hinges 8 and 9 respectively. Helical Springs 10 and 11 urge end extension members 6 and 7 to the extended position; that is, to the erect or Vertical position shown in Fig. 2. The assembly is completed by cover member 12, having end stops 13 and 14 built to the under side of the ends thereof. It is to be understood that cover member 12 may be suitably upholstered as is conventional in the furniture industry. Extending downward along the sides of cover member 12 are attached side skirts 15 and 16. These side skirts are of rigid material, but are narrowed somewhat at their lower extremity so that the Patented Nov. 13, 1956 ICC device may assume the position shown in Fig. 4 with the end edges of the side skirtabutting end member 3 or 4 of the ottoman, thus stabilizing the cover member. Cam follower pin 17 is attached to side skirt 15 and 16 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 and rides in cam groove 18 in casting 19 attached to side member 1 or :2 of the ottoman. Cam groove 18 is a closed figure, geometrically speaking, and is so designed as to permit cover 12 to be raised or lowered at either end or to be raised at both ends or to be lowered at both ends and still lock cover member 12 in any position selected of the four locking points of cam.
It will be noted that the four corners of cam groove 18 are designed to correspond to various positions of the ottoman 'and provide longitudinal stability for cover member 12.
It will be noted that end extension member 6 diifers in height from end extension member 7. Accordingly, when the device is in extended or raised position, one end of cover member 12 rests at a different elevation than the other end. This position for the device is shown in Fig. 2 with end extension members 6 and 7 extended in the vertical or erect position and cam follower pin 17 in the upper extremity of cam groove 18. In this position also, the ends of end extension members 6 and 7 rest against stops 13 and 14 attached to the under side of the ends of cover member 12. In this position the device offers the means of keeping one's feet in an elevated position by arranging the ottoman with its lower end nearest the chair or of allowing the feet to be somewhat lower than the knees by placing the ottoman. with its higher end nearest the chair.
In Fig. 3, the ottoman is shown in its lowermost position With end extension members 6 and 7 folded inward and cover member 12 resting upon end members 3 and 4. In this position of the cover, cam follower pin 17 rests in the lower extremity of cam groove 18 locking cover member 12 in a firm position.
In Fig. 4, two positions of the device are shown. The first, shown in solid lines, shows end extension member 6 in a Vertical position and end extension member 7 folded inward with the left end of cover member 12 elevated and the right end of cover member 12 resting upon end member 4. In this position, it will be noted that corners 19a and 20 of the skirt member 15 abuts the inner surface of end members 3 and 4, lending longitudinal rigidity to the cover member 12. In this position of the device, cam follower pin 17 rests as shown in the leftmost corner of the geometrical figure constituting cam 18. The device may also be adjusted to the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 4 by folding end extension member 6 inward and downward and allowing end extension member 7 to be extended upward and outward. This position offers the greatest inclination for the cover member 12. In this position of the device, cam follower pin 17 rests in the farthest right portion of cam 18 as shown in the figure.
It should be noted that the device actually provides seven combinations of adjustment, namely completely depressed, completely elevated, one end up and the other end down, and vice versa, and these latter two positions reversed; that is, inasmuch as end extension members 6 and 7 are of a different height, different positions may be assumed by reversing the position. of the ottoman before the chair, with either one or the other of the end extension members up or down. It will be noted Vfurther that the device is simple of adjustment, inasmuch as it is necessary only to depress the end extension members and apply upward or downward force upon the cover member in order to force it to assume a new position. In all positions discussed, the device is stable longitudinally; that is, in the figures, cover member 12 is capable 9 of withstanding considerable force in the left or right dii'ection.
Although the invention has been described and illustratedin detail, the same is to. be taken by way of illustration only, the spirit and scope of the inventionbeing limited only by the termstof the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An adjustable ottoman comprising an open-topped box frame member, al cover member having downwardly extending side skirts, a face cam having a substantially parallelogram shaped cam groove secured to at least one of the sides of said. frame member,` a cam follower attached to the adjacent side skirt and riding in said cam groove and means fot'- supporting the ends of said cover in more than one Vertical position.
2. An ottornan adjustable vertically and angularly comprising a rectangular frame having two ends, two sides and an open top, end extensions hinged to the upper edge of said ends and extendable vertically, spring means urging said hinged extensions to extended position, a rigid cover 20 A3 member covering said frame and having rigid side skirts extending downwardly into said frame along the insides thereof, said skirts being predeterminately narrower at their lower end than at their upper end, a cam groove constituting a closed geometrical figure attached to at least one side of said frame, a cam follower pin attached to the said side skirt adjacent said cam groove and following in said cam groove, said cam groove being of substantially trapezoidal` quadrilateral shape to permit- References Cited in the file of this patent UNITEDV STATES PATENTS 2,675,862 Eicl'iorstl Apr. 20, 1954
