l l vUisirrnn STATES PATENT @Friet JACOB HERBRAND,
OF EREMONT, OHio,Ass1eNOe TO THE HERBRAND COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE. f
` DROP-PERCH FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATlON forming part of Letters PatentyNo. 276,967, dated May 1, 1883.
' l Application filed October 6. 1882. (No model.) l
`To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB HERBRAND, of
Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use-.r .ful Improvements in DropReach Gears for `Vehicles, of'which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My inventionconsists in certain improve ments upon the carriage-gearfor which Letters Patent of the UnitedStates No. 244,599 were granted to me July 19,1881, and are specifically designated in the appended claims. .In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my iuvention,"Figure 1 is a plan view with portions broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, the front axle being 34.., q. i. lugsDD.
45 t i holes.
`bar B and coupling U as strong at theparts;
partly turned, as in Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, an'd'Fig. 4 is a similar section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
" The object of one part of my improvements A .is to strengthen,in a convenient and economi- 25` i i vide a simple and convenient way ot' securing calm'a'rner, the security of theend attachments of `the wooden reach to the metallic parts which are lcpnnected to the axles, and to pro- ,the lower iifthwheelplate to the axle. i
l site sides of` the reach near its ends.
d pass `through the `bar. B` and'reach, .and
jecting lugs, D D, to bear against theoppo-V Bolts el through the back coupling` and reach,` `re. spectively, between the respective pairs Vof These lugsiforin stays or clamps upon each side ofthe wooden reach where the end bolts pass through it, and serve to hold the reach ends lirmly and to prevent them from splitting where weakened by the bolt- These lugs also serve to render the In order to provide against the tilting ot' one of the fifth-wheel plates with referenceto the other when the carriage is being turned, 6o and when the axle is cramped or brought'to an acute angle with reference to the reach, I. provide projections or coincident bearing-lugs E upon the upper and lower plates of the iifth wheel, so that there shall be the same bearing 65 y and length of leverage to keep the plates parallel to each other under tilting or twisting strain, when the axle is cramped, as when it `stands at right angles to the reach. These lugs are. light, and can be cheaply formed by 7o i casting upon the upper and lower plates, F and G, of the iifth-W-heel. x
H indicates longitudinalextensions or clipbearings of thelower iit'th-wheel plate, adepted to receive axle-clips or straps h h to hind 7 5 the plate to thefront axle. These straps are found practically superior to bolts, or to clips 'which pass wthrough the fifth-wheel plates or parts thereof, or to any other means of fastening heretofore employed of which I am 8o aware, because bolts weaken the axle and plates, and clips passing through the plates necessarily weaken them. y i Having thus described my invention,\vh.atl i claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patient 8 5 of the UnitedStates, is-- 1. The combination ol' the reach, the reach-` bar B, having the pair of lugs D D, and the .bolt (l, passing through the reach and reachbar between the lugs, as and for the purpose 9c set forth.4
`2. 'lhe combination ol' the fifth-wheel plate F, the reach-bar B, having the-lugs D D,`the
reach A, the bolt passing Athrough the reachbar and reach between said lugs, the back In testimony whereof I have hereunto sub.- 1o coupling, its lugs,a.nd the boltpassing through scribed my name this 22d day of September, the reach and back coupling between its lugs, A. D. 1882. as and for the purpose set forth.
5 3. The combination of the 4front axle, the JACOB HERBRAND.
lower tth-Wheel plate, G, its end extensions f or clip-bearings7 H, and the clips h, embracing Witnesses: said bearings and the axle, all as and for the MARCUS S. HOPKINS, purpose set forth. v NELLIE HOLMES.
