Claims. (Cl. 70-456) This invention relates to a key case and more particularly to improvements in that type of key case wherein one or more keys are secured therein within the case and wherein a selected key may be temporarily extended from the case for use and then retracted into the case after use, and wherein each key tends to remain in either its retracted or extended position.
A further object of this invention is to provide a key case wherein each individual key therein is selectively manipulated to extend it to lock operating position and thereafter retract it to concealed position within the key case.
A further object of this invention is to provide improved means of manipulating the keyholder within the case from key retracted position to key extended position, and thereafter to key retracted position, and also having means tending to maintain the keyholder and its key .in either the key retracted position or the key extended position until it is manually manipulated from one position to the other.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a key case having a separate handle for each keyholder in the case which may be individually manipulated to extend and to retract the key mounted on the keyholder therewithin with means easily holding the keyholder in either the extended or the retracted position.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a friction reducing rail on which the keyholder and its associated parts are supported during the extending and retracting motion.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a' key case having a readily removable side permitting readily removable replacement of one or more floors within the key case, each floor having at least one complete individual key actuating mechanism according to this invention, so that the floor with its keyholder may be removed from the case for the purpose of inserting or removing a key on the keyholder.

Briefly, this invention includes a key case having an open end through which one or more keys may be extended and having a readily removable side allowing access to one or more floors carrying the key actuating mechanism, such actuating mechanism including a trackway along one side of the floor extending longitudinally toward the open end of the key case, a carriage slidable on the trackway with cooperating means preventing accidental removal of the carriage from the trackway, a bracket on the carriage and a keyholder mounted on the bracket, the bracket also having a slot, and a pin carried on one end of a link lever movable within the slot for actuating the bracket in either direction, the other end of the link lever having a lost motion or oifset for pin and slot connection to a handle lever which is removably pivoted to the floor and has a handle knob extending through a slot in the side of the case for actuation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention comprises the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, claimed and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

There is shown at 10 the key case or" this invention having an open end 11 through which one or more keys such as 12 may be extended and retracted by the mechanism of this invention. As herein illustrated, the key case is intended for a maximum of three keys such as 12 and three individual key actuating assemblies are therefore necessary, but inasmuch as each assembly is identical in construction and operation, it will be understood that the following description of one assembly likewise applies to each of the other key operating assemblies. With three key operating assemblies as shown, two removable floors 14- and 15 are shown, floor 14 having one key operating assembly 16 thereon, while floor 15 has two key actuating assemblies 16 thereon. It will be noted that floor 15 has a key actuating assembly 16 on each side thereof, while the floor 14 has a single key actuating assembly on one side thereof and if additional keys are to be provided for, the key case will have an additional floor and additional key actuating assembly for each additional key.
Longitudinally extending along the floor 14 adjacent one side 17 of the key case 10 is a track 18 which is wider at its head 20 than it is at its base 21. Slidable on the track 18 is a carriage 22 having a slot 23 similarly shaped to the shape of the track 18 so that when the carriage 22 is in position on the track 18 the carriage cannot be accidently separated from the track 18. Extending from the carriage 22 in a direction laterally of the track 18 is a bracket 24 having a slot 25 ending in a slot offset 26' atthe end opposite from the track 18.
Mounted on the bracket 24 is a keyholder 25, the keyholder 26 consisting of a plate 27 and a key retaining spring clip 28 extending parallel to the keyholder plate 27 and spaced therefrom by the thickness of the average key 12, spring clip 28 having a detent pin 31 extending at a slight angle as shown so that when the end of the key 12 is pressed thereagainst the detent pin 31 will lift up the spring clip 28 permitting the head 30 of the key 12 to enter until the detent pin 31 snaps into the usual hole in the head of the key 12. To assist in holding the key 12 firmly in position on the keyholder, a pair of diverging spring arms 32 are provided which press against the end of the key 12 and thus tend to hold it rigidly in position on the keyholder 26.
Extending parallel to the track 13 is a friction reducing rail 33 on the floor l4 beneath the keyholder plate 27, thus preventing the entire width of the keyholder plate from contacting the floor 14 and reducing the effort necessary to move the carriage 22 and its keyholder 26 longitudinally of the key case 10.
The mechanism for actuating or moving the bracket and its keyholder longitudinally of the key case includes a link lever 3 having a pin 35 mounted on an offset end 36 thereof, the pin 35 cooperating with the slot 25 so that when the link lever 34 is actuated the pin-35 travels between the ends of the slot 25. The other end of the link lever 34 is pivoted on a stud 37 on the floor 14. As will be noted, the end 38 of the link lever 34 is somewhat enlarged and has two spaced apart peripheral indentations 40 so positioned thereon with relation to the stud 37 as to cooperate with the free end 41 of a spring 4-2 secured to the side 43 of key case 10. The indentations 4t) serve to hold the link lever 34 at either end of its path of movement.
Mounted on the enlarged end 38 of link lever 34 and eccentric to its pivot 37 is a pin 44 cooperating with a slot in one end of a handle lever 45, the other end of handle lever 45 being integrally formed into a handle knob 46 pivoted on a stud 47 on the floor 14. A removable retaining pin 48 is inserted through a diametric opening in the top end of stud 47 so as to hold the handle knob 46 and its handle lever 45 in operative position with its slot over the link lever pin 44. The end of the handle knob 46 extends through a slot 50 in the side 43 of the case 10. This side 43 of case is removably secured by means of bent fingers 51 which hook into appropriate recesses 52 at the open end of case 10 and at the other end a stud 53 removably inserted through an opening 54 in the side 43 into a threaded opening in an abutment 55 appropriately located within the case 10.
In operation, the keys 12 are installed each in its appropriate operating assembly by first removing the side 43 by removing the stud screw 53. This permits the floors 14 and to be removed and when removed the keys are installed by merely pressing their head ends against the detents 31 of the spring clip 28 so that they snap into place and are held firmly therein by the diverging spring arms 32. When the floors are removed from the case, the cooperating slot 23 and track 18 keep the carriage 22 and bracket 24 from separating, and the link lever pin 35 is held in slot by the oifset portion 36 of link lever 34 therein, the link lever 34 in turn being held in position by the slotted end of handle lever 45 which in turn is held in position by the removable pin 4-8 in the stud 47, thus holding the mechanism against accidental separation until the pin 48 is intentionally removed. When the key is inserted, the floors are placed back. into position and held in spaced arrangement by bosses 56 at the corners, the threaded boss 55 in which the retaining screw 53 is inserted being located to act as a spacer between the two floors at that corner. To extend a particular key 12, its appropriate handle knob 46 is pressed by a finger or thumb along its milled edge 57 so that when the handle knob 46 is pivoted by this pressure about its pivot pin 47, the handle lever 45 acting through its pin and slot connection at 44 to the link lever 34- causes the link 'lever pin 35 to travel from the inside end of slot 25 in bracket 24 to the outside end and then back again to the inside end. This causes a full extension or full retraction of the keyholder 26 and the key head carried thereby thus extending the shank of the key 12 from the end of the case when moved in the extending direction. As the key reaches its extended position, the link lever pin enters the offset 26' in the slot 25 thus holding the carriage in the extended position against the pressure of the key entering its keyhole, this being assisted, of course, by the pressure of the free end 41 of the detent spring 42 in its appropriate indentation in the link lever end 38. However when the handle knob 46 is pivoted in the op posite direction it first pulls the pin 35 out of the offset 26 back into the slot 25 starting the carriage 22 on its inward motion as the pin 35 travels toward the back end of the slot 25, thus moving from the position shown in Fig. 6 to the position shown in Fig. 5, and as the pressure is continued the pin travels back again toward the offset end of the slot 25 as shown in Fig. 4, thus retracting the key entirely within the case and it is held in this position by the cooperation of the free end 41 of spring 42 entering the other indentation 40 in the enlarged end 38 of link lever 34.
There is thus provided a key case for one or more keys wherein the keys are positively extended and positively retracted by mere finger or thumb pressure on the milled end of the handle knob, and when in extended position the key remains firm for insertion into its keyhole or operation of the key.
While the device has been .shown and the structure described in detail, it is obvious that this invention is not to be considered as being limited to the exact form disclosed, and that changes in detail and construction may be made therein within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is:
l. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever and means pivoting said handle lever within said case.
2. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means pivoting said handle lever within said case, and a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in one case side.
3. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, a bracket extendinglaterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever Within said case, said link lever pin moving from end to-end of said carriage bracket slot, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means pivoting said handle lever within said case, and a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in one case side and means for removably securing one caseside to said case.
4. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means pivoting said handle lever Within said case, and a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in one case side and means for removably securing one case side comprising an internally threaded boss on said case at one end of said case side, a threaded stud for securing said case side end to said boss, and hooked finger means at the other end of said case side and cooperating recess means in said case for said finger means.
5. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; said keyholder comprising a plate extending from said bracket toward said case open end, a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means pivoting the other end of said handlelever within said case, a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in said case side remote from said track and means for removably securing said remote case side.
6. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; said keyholder comprising a plate extending from said bracket toward said case open end, and a key retaining means on said bracket comprising a spring clip having a key engaging detent extending parallel to said keyholder plate and a pair of diverging spring arms in the plane between said plate and spring clip for engaging the head end of the key; a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending Within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, a handle lever having a pin and slot connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said pin and slot connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means pivoting the other end of said handle lever within said case and a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in said case side.
7. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; said keyholder comprising a plate extending from said bracket toward said case open end, and a key retaining means on said bracket comprising a spring clip having a key engaging detent extending parallel to said keyholder plate and a pair of diverging spring arms in the plane between said plate and spring clip for engaging the head end of the key; a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, spring detent means cooperating with said pivoted end of said link lever tending to releasably hold said link lever at each end of its pivotal movement, a handle lever having an offset connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever and means removably pivoting said handle lever within said case.
8. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, said slot having a slight offset therein at the end remote from said carriage, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; said keyholder comprising a plate extending from said bracket toward said case open end, and a key retaining means on said bracket comprising a spring clip having a key engaging detent extending parallel to said keyholder plate and a pair of diverging spring arms in the plane between said plate and spring clip for engaging the head end of the key; a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, said link lever pin entering said bracket slot offset when in key extended position, spring detent means cooperating with said pivoted end of said link lever tending to releasably hold said link lever at each end of its pivotal movement, a handle lever having a pin and slot connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said pin and slot connection be tween said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means removably pivoting the other end of said handle lever within said case, a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in said case side remote from said track and means for removably securing said remote case side comprising an internally threaded boss on said case at one end of said case side, a threaded stud for securing said case side end to said boss, and hooked finger means at the other end of said case side and cooperating recess means in said case for said finger means.
9. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; said keyholder comprising a plate extending from said bracket toward said case open end, and a key retaining means on said bracket, a friction reducing rail extending parallel to said carriage track on one side of said case, a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side and substantially centrally thereof, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever b'eing eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means pivoting said handle lever within said case and a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in said case.
10. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprocable, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said car-- riage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, said slot havin a slight offset therein at the end remote from said carriage, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; a friction reducing rail extending parallel to said carriage track beneath said keyholder, a link lever having a ca riage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, said link lever pin entering said bracket slot offset when in key extended position, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever and means pivoting said handle lever within said case.
11. A key case having an open end through which a key is longitudinally reciprccaole, a track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a. slot therein extending laterally to said track, said slot having a slight offset therein the end remote from said carriage, a keyholder mounted on said bracket; said keyholder comprising a plate extending from said bracket toward said case open end, and a key retaining means on said bracket comprising a spring clip having a key engaging detent and a pair of diverging spring arms for engaging the head end of the key; a friction reducing rail extending parallel to said carriage track on one side of said case, a link lever having a arriage actuating pin at one end t f extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side, said link is pin movin toward end of said carr e bracncslot, said link lever ,,.n ing said bracket slot offset when in key extended position, spring detent means cooperating with said pivoted end of said link lever tending to releasably hold said link lever at each end of its pivotal movement, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means removably pivoting the other end of said handle lever within said case, handle knob on handle lever extending through a slot in said case on the side remote from said track, and means for removably securing said remote case side comprising an internally threaded boss on said case at one end of said case side, a threaded stud for securing said case side end to said boss, and hooked finger means at the other end of said case side and cooperating recess means in said case for said finger means.
12. A key case having an open end through which a plurality of keys are each individually longitudinally reciprocablc, a plurality of floors providing a compartment for each key, each floor having at least one track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a
carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket substantially centrally of said case; a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side and substantially centrally thereof, said link lever pin moving toward the ar end of said carriage bracket slot when initiating movement of said carriage and back toward the initial side of said slot on completing movement thereof, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, and means pivoting said handle lever within said case.
13. A key case having an open end through which a plurality of keys are each individually longitudinally reciprocable, a plurality of floors providing a compartment for each key, each floor having at least one track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidably on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket substantially centrally of said case; a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side and substantially centrally thereof, said link lever pin moving toward the far end of said carriage bracket slot when initiating movement of said carriage and back toward the initial side of said slot on completing movement thereof, a handle lever hav ing a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means pivoting said handle lever within said case, a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in the side opposite from said track side and means for removably securing said latter case side permitting ready removal and replacement of said floors in said case.
14. A key case having an open end through which a plurality of keys are each individually longitudinally reciprocable, a plurality of floors providing a compartment for each key, each floor having at least one track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, a keyholder mounted on said bracket substantially centrally of said case; said keyholder comprising a plate extending from said bracket toward said case open end, and a key retaining means on said bracket, a friction reducing rail extending parallel to said carriage track on one side of said case, a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever on its floor within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, spring detent means cooperating with said pivoted end of said link lever tending to releasably hold said link lever at each end of its pivotal movement, a handle lever having a connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means removably pivoting the other end of said handle lever on its floor within said case, a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in said case 9 side remote from said track and means for removably securing said latter case side permitting ready removal and replacement of said floors in said case.
15. A key case having an open end through which a plurality of keys are each individually longitudinally re ciprocable, a plurality of floors providing a compartment for each key, each floor having at least one track extending longitudinally of said case adjacent one side thereof, a carriage slidable on said track, cooperating means on said carriage and track locking said carriage against separation from said track, a bracket extending laterally from said carriage having a slot therein extending laterally to said track, said slot having a slight ofiset therein at the end remote from said carriage, a keyholder mounted on said bracket substantially centrally of said case; said keyholder comprisinga plate extending from said bracket toward said case open end, and a key retaining means on said bracket comprising a spring clip having a key engaging detent and extending parallel to said keyholder plate and a pair of diverging spring arms in the plane between said plate and spring clip for engaging the head end of the key; a friction reducing rail extending parallel to said carriage track on one side of said case, a link lever having a carriage actuating pin at one end thereof extending within said carriage bracket slot, means for pivotally mounting the other end of said link lever on its floor within said case adjacent the side opposite from said track side and substantially centrally thereof, said link lever pin moving from end to end of said carriage bracket slot, said link lever pin entering said bracket slot offset when in key extended position, spring detent means cooperating with said pivoted end of said link lever tending to releasably hold said link lever at each end of its pivotal movement, a handle lever having a pin and slot connection at one end to said link lever pivoted end, said pin and slot connection between said link lever and said handle lever being eccentric to said pivoting means of said link lever, means removably pivoting the other end of said handle lever on its floor within said case, a handle knob on said handle lever extending through a slot in said case side remote from said track, and means for removably securing said latter case side permitting ready removal and replacement of said floors in said case comprising an internally threaded boss on said case at one end of said case side, a threaded stud for securing said case side end to said boss, and hooked finger means at the other end of said case side and cooperating recess means in said case for said finger means.
