VEHICLE MOUNTED GRAIN DRILL FILLER Filed Jan. 51, 1955 2 Sheets-$heet 2 INVENTOR flMPhZZ ATTORNEY5 United States Patent 2,765,936 VEHICLE MOUNTED GRAIN DRILL FILLER Curt M. Phillips, Rudyard, Mont. Application January 31, 1955, Serial No. 485,209 3 Claims. (Cl. 214-8332) This invention relates to a grain drill filler. An object of this invention is to provide an improved Another object of this invention is to provide a grain drill filler as an attachment for a truck body so that the charged into the hopper of the drill.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement,
construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a detail side elevation, partly broken away, of a vehicle having a hopper body with a grain drill filler mounted thereon constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 66 of Figure 3.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary side elevation of a modified form of this invention.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates generally a vehicle body which is of the dumping type and includes a hydraulic operator 11 for raising the forward end of the body 10 so as to effect a flow of the material in the body toward the rear or end gate 13.
In order to provide a means whereby seed which is in the body 10 may be discharged into a grain drill, generally indicated at 12, and particularly in the hopper 14 thereof, I have provided a filler attachment for the body 10. This attachment includes on elongated elevator tube 15 which is supported by bracing bars 16 at an inclination to the vertical with respect to the length of the body 10. The tube 15 is formed with an opening 17 at its lower end and the lower end of the tube 15 is positioned at the junction between the bottom wall 18 of body 10 and the end gate 13. Tube 15 at its lower end is secured in a cap 43 having a threaded stud 44 extending through the side wall 45 and secured by nuts 46.
2,765,936 Patented Oct. 9, 1956 carried by cap 43. The conveyor or elevator 19 includes a shaft 21 extending through the upper end 22 of the tube 15, and shaft 21 has fixed thereto a grooved pulley 23.
An endless belt 24 engages about the pulley 23 and about a The motor or power member 27 is preferably an electric motor which is connected to a battery or power source 30 by means of conductors 31 and 32. The conductor 32 is grounded to the vehicle and a switch 33 is interposed in conductor 32.
The upper end portion of the elevator tube 15 has an outlet or discharge nipple 34 connected thereto and a scoping tubes or pipes.
A lower inner p'pe 38 telescopes into the upper pipe 37, and a second flexible tube 39 is secured at its upper end as by a clamp 40 to the lower end of lower tube 38. The entire length of the delivery member 35 is lower end of flexible ating the seed flowing down through the tubular member 35 is adapted to drop into the drill hopper 14.
By providing the flexible upper and lower tubes 36 and 39, the delivery member 35 may be shifted lengthwise of the drill hopper 14 so as to evenly fill this hopper.
In the use and operation of this device, the braces 16 are secured by detachable fastening members 42 to the elevator tube 15 disposed at substantlally the junction between the bottom Wall 18 of body 10 and end gate 13.
The seed will gravitatingly flow through the intake opening 17 into the lower end of tube 15 and rotation of conveyor or elevator 19 will move the seed upwardly and discharge the seed into the nipple 34. The seed in nipple 34 will gravitatingly flow downwardly through the tubular delivery member 35.
When the device is not in livery member 35 may be swung mwardly of the body 10 when the device is not in use.
With a device as hereinbefore described, the drill hopper 14 may be easily and quickly filled in the field so that it will not be necessary to move the drill to the barn or to carry the seed in bags for discharge into the seed hopper 14.
This device will provide a convenient and effective means for filling the hopper of the drill, and when the body so that the vehicle may be used for other purposes. The device can be removed by detaching stud 44 from side wall 45 and removing brace bolts 42.
When the delivery tube 35 is not in use this member may be mounted in brackets 47 secured to the outer side of side wall 45. Braces 16 are secured to a split clamping ring 48 engaging about tube 15 and the angle of tube 15 can be adjusted by means of elongated slots 49 through which bolts 42 engage.
In Figure 7 there is shown a slightly modified form of this invention wherein the motor 271: is secured by bracket 28a on the upper side of conveyor housing 15a. Bracket 29a braces the motor 27a and the conveyor shaft 21a is operated by belt 24a. The outlet nipple 34a has the upper flexible tube 3611 connected therewith. In other respects the construction shown in Figure 7 is the same as shown in Figures 1 to 6, inclusive.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination of a grain drill filler attachment and a vehicle body having means to elevate one end thereof comprising an elongated elevator tube, supporting means detachably connecting sai tube to said body for supporting said tube at an inclination to the vertical in said body with the lower end thereof adjacent the lower end of said body when elevated, a screw elevator rotatable in said tube, said tube having a lower intake opening and an upper discharge opening, a power member, means sup porting said power member at the upper end of said tube, a driving connection between said power member and said elevator, and a discharge tube extending from said discharge opening.
2. A grain drill attachment as set forth in claim 1 wherein said discharge tube is formed of an intermediate non-flexible section and upper and lower flexible sections.
scoping non-flexible intermediate tubular members, and
upper and lower flexible tubular members.
