Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WVILLIAM H. EVANS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ToNes.
SPECIFICATION forming' part `of Letters Patent No. 276,572, dated May 1, 1883.
Application led September 19, 1882. (No model.)
To all -zchom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. EVANS, of Boston, in the county of Snliolk and State ot Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Tongs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to tongs more especially designed for use in removing articles from showwindows ot stores, and from other places inconvenient ofaecess with the hands alone.
This improved tongs is composed ot' two jaws, which are carried by a handle of `sufficient length, one `jaw being arranged to be closed upon the other a gainsta spr-ing by mechanism connected to it and running to a couvenient part of the handle to be operated by the hfand grasping the handle, and to be opened by the reaction of said spring, and both jaws are hung upon the handle, and are capable of being changed and set in position, all as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying plate ot' drawings my improved tongs are illustrated. Figure l is a side view on a reduced scale. Figs. 2 and 3 are views, respectively, of different edges of the jaws tothe tongs and a portion of the hafndle. Fig. 4 is a side view, on an enlarged scale, of the jaws to the tongs and the e'nd of the handle to which they are attached. Fig. 5is a; central longitudinal section of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical "section on an enlarged scale .and on line 6 6, Fig. 1.
1n the drawings, A is the stick or handle, made of any suitable length for the use intended. This handle at one end carriesjtwo jaws, B and C, both hung upon a center-pin, a, at one end, so as to be opened from `and closed upon each other, working against a spring, b, in the closing of the jaws and with l the reaction of said spring in the opening of the jaws. The center-pin a is fastened to the jaw C, and it passes loosely through the jaw B, and also through the end d of the handle A, and thus the two Vjaws can be swung upon the handle and changed in their position as to the length of the handle-as, for instance, as shown in Fig. 4in dotted lines. Thejaw G has a series of notehes,f, and the handle a spring catch-wire, g, for engaging by its part h with said notches, all so that bythe engagement with the catch-wire g with a notch, f, ot' the jaw C the adjustment of thejaws as to the length of the handle may be made secure against accidental change.
lis a string or wire fastened to thejaw C, and
from thence passing through a slot, in, in the jaw B, partially around a guide-pulley, n, and;
thencealongthelength ofthehandleA,through guide-loops fr, toward the end s of the handle, which is grasped by the hand, and there it is provided with a sliding finger-piece, u, for op erating the line to close the jaw C upon the article to be seized by the tongs, and thus to grasp it between such jaw and the otherjaw B.
These tongs enable articles to be grasped for removal from or insertion in a store-window, Ste., which would be most inconvenient and impossible to do with the hands alone, and as both jaws are capable ofthe adjustment upon the handle described they can be put-into the most convenient position for operation.
Having thus described my invention, what claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is-
l. Tongs composed of twojaws, B C, hinged to a l1audle,A, and arranged to be adjusted upon said handle, and to be closed and opened substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
-2. Tongs composed of twojaws, B t0, hinged to a. handle, A,'provided with a spring-catch,- g, to engage with a notch, d, of one ofsaidjaws, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand iu the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLAM H. EVANS.
