COKE-FURNACE AND APPARATUS CONNECTED THEREWITH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,504, dated April 24, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD THOMAS, of Oarbondale, in the county of Jackson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and use.- ful Improvement in Coke-Furnaces and Apparatus Connected Therewith, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my improvement is to provide for the convenient withdrawal ofcoke from the furnaces or ovens in which it is made, and for the loading of the coke into railroad or other cars, ready to be removed without the use of rakes, forks, or other devices, thereby reducing the labor heretofore required in handling the coke, and saving the waste resulting from such handling.
My present invention is an improvement upon the apparatus shown in the Letters Patent granted to me November 15, 1881, No. 249,694; and the invention consists in a coke drawer and loader, which are combined together upon a car, which also carries an engine and other gearing for the operation of the apparatus, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of a cokefurnace and of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, showing a modified form of the apparatus.
The furnaces or retorts A are built side by side at a suitable elevation and in any desired manner, and in their construction are to be substantially the same as is shown in the Letters Patent aforesaid. Extending along at the front of the furnaces are the tracks a a, the tracks next to the furnaces being for the car thatcarries the drawing and loading apparatus, and the outer tracks for the cars into which the coke is to be loaded. The drawing and loading apparatus is carried by a platformcar, B, of a suitable size, upon one end of which is an engine, by which the apparatus is operated. Transversely of the car B is fixed a frame, a, supporting an inclined platform, d, that is of a length to extend from the front of the furnace A to and over the cars D D, into which the coke is to be loaded. At the ends of the platform (I are chain or sprocket wheels carrying endless chainsff, to which are attached the scrapers 9, that act to carry the coke up the platform d. The endless chains and scrapers are operated. by means of chainbelts h from the engine b. At the frontof the furnaces is a sheet-iron chute, 'L', hinged at i, so that it may be turned up out of the way when not required for use, and which, when the furnace is to be drawn, is to be turned down to cover the lower end of the elevator, so
as to discharge the coke thereon at a short distance from the lower end of the platform (I, and thereby preventthe possibility of waste. Near the lower end of the elevator-platform d isa fine screen, 7a, which allows ashes to pass through from the coke, and near the upper end of the platform is a coarser screen, I, which allows the fine coke to pass through, this fine 7o coke being received into a separate car beneath the platform. Upon the car B, and fitted for operation by the engine, is a winding-drum,
m, from which a chain, it, passes to the scraper 0 in the furnaces A. This scraper 0 may be of any suitable construction, and when not in use is to be carried by a car upon a track at the rear end of the furnaces. The car B is also provided with a water-tank,p, from which a pipe extends over the platform 11, and the pipe is provided with a sprinkler, q, for wetting the coke as it is received from the furnaces upon the lower end of the elevator-platform.
In the operation of the apparatus the car B is moved along from one furnace to another, and the coke withdrawn from the furnaces inisuccession. Upon reachingafurnace thatis ready for being drawn, the doors at the end of the furnace are opened, the sheet-iron chute is 10 wered to place, the chain a is passed through the 0 furnace and connected to the scraper 0, and the engine then set in operation to wind the chain a and to operate the elevating apparatus at, the same time. The colte, as it is forced out by the forward movement of the scraper, passes 5 over the plate or chute tand falls upon the elevator-platform d. The chains f and scrap ers g carry the coke to the upper end of the platform, where it is discharged into the cars that are placed upon the tracks to receive it. I c The finercoke passes through the screen or grate l, either directly into a car, or it may be received in a hopper placed upon the under side of the platform. While the coke is being drawn it is wetted by the water from the sprinkler q, and thus cooled or partially cooled before .it is discharged into the car. It will be seen that by this operation the ork of drawing the coke and of loading it upon cars, readyforbeingshipped,isdonesimultaneously, and the coke not being handled or conveyed to to any distance before loaded, a large amount of labor is saved, and at the same time Waste of the coke is prevented.
The apparatus shown in Fig. 3 is intended for use where the furnaces or ovens can be erected at a sufficient height to dispense with the elevator-platform. In that case, in place of the elevator, the car is provided with achute, s, of the same width as the oven, and extending across the car on a level with the bottom of the oven. At thecenter of this chute is to be a fixed screen for removing the fine ashes, and the screen for taking out the fine coke is fixed at the end of the chute at an inclination, so as to serve for the discharge of the coke into the cars. The car is also provided with a suitable frame extending out at one side and carrying a sheave, around which passes the draw-chain a, so that the scraper may be drawn out far enough to carry the coke to the car.
I do not limit myself to the details of construction exactly as shown, as they may be varied within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the car B, of the elevating apparatus, substantially as described, for receiving the coke from the furnaces and elevating and discharging the same.
2. The combination, upon the car B, of the winding-drum m, the platform d, chainsf, and scrapers g, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an apparatus for drawing coke,'the
combination, with the elevating-platform d, of the screens 70 Z, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with the car B, provided with a coke chute or elevator, of the water-tank p and sprinkler q, substantially as and for the purposespecitied.
5. The combination, with the furnace A and elevating'platforln d, of the hinged chute t', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
