CARRIAGE-TOP.

To `all lwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Louis SCHMETZER, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing at the city of Rothenburg-on-the-Tauber, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Tops, of which the following is a speoitication.

This invention relates to an improved construction of tops and canopies for childrens carriages; and it consists of certain improvements in the construction of tops and canopies for childrens carriages and their attachment to the carriage-bodies,` as will hereinafter be fully described. l

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a detail view of one of the stays of an improved detachable carriage-top. Fig. 2 is a side view of a detachable carriage-top, shown attached to the body of a childs carriage; and Figs. 3 and 3 show two forms of the hook for fastening the top to the body. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are ohildrens carriages with adjustable canopies.

The rst part of my invention consists of a detachable top, B, for childrens and other carriages, in which the stays B are made of two wooden side strips, a a, and a lateral top strip, b, which strips are conneoted'by-strong spring corner-'pieces d, of steel, as shown clearly in Fig. l. These springs d are so arranged that when the top B is removed from the body A of the carriage the ends of the stays are sprung inwardly. To apply them to the carriage they are spread apart, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, and applied to the metallic supporting-plates f, attached to the sides of the carriage-body A. By constructing the stays of y the carriage-top in this manner the warping of the stays, if they are of one piece, is avoided, and a top furnished which always` retains its shape. The top B is secured to the body In place of-using the rear hook i, (shown in Fig. 3,) a hookyi, which is applied to the lowermost stay of the carriage-top, may be used for connecting the top to the rear part of the body A, as shown in Fig. 3i.

If the top part is desired to be removed from the carriage, the stays B are removed from the side hooks, together with the supporting-plates f, by pressing the side plates and lthe ends of the stays in outward direction, and then moving the entire top backward, so as to release it from the rear hook i. The stays are pivoted in the usual manner to the supporting side plates,f, and exert a strain in inward direction upon the same, owing to -the cornersprings employed in each stay, so that the supporting-plates yare rmly pressed against the h'xed side hooks i, and thus the top firmly secured to the carriage-body without being liable to get off except in the manner described.

The adjustable top can he applied to the front or rear end of the body, as desired. It may be exchanged for use with a canopy, B2, the stays g of which are piv'oted to the side plates, j', and retained, like the stays of theremovable` top, by a spring-locking device, for which Letters Patent have been granted to me heretofore, dated December 27, 1881, and numbered 251,472. The upper ends of the staysg are also applied .to the canopy by platesf and similar spring-locking devices, whereby the canopy may be adjusted at any desired angle of inclination, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. rIhe canopy is further provided with a lambrequin, formed of a front portion, t, and a rear portion, r, which are both attached to the frame h of the canopy, the lambrequin being made of such length as to reach down to the body A. The fabric composing the i'ront and rear sections, t and r, of the lambrequin is provided with vertical strips h ot' elastic material, to the lower end of which rings and tassels h2 are applied', by which the extended lamhrequin-sections are applied to hooks and buttons h3 of the body A, as shown in Fig. 6. On releasing the rings h? from the buttons h3 the rubber strips h draw up the lambrequnsections and retain them in folded-up state along the frame h, as shown in Fig. 5.. In this manner the canopy may be changed to a closed top in a very simple and convenient manner,
