L. D. JONES.
LIP-TING JACK. No. 276,140. Patented Apr. 17,1883.
WITNESSES 11v V'EJVIOR,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWELLYN D. JONES, OF OLNEY, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO HARRY A. JONES, OF SAME PLACE.
LlFTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,140, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed January 4, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. D. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olney, Montgomery county, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting- Jacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to lifting-jacks,
and the object of it is to provide a lifting-jack that shall be simple and cheap in construction and effective in operation; and to that end the novelty consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved lifting'jack; and Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section.
A is the base, and is provided with two standards, B and G. The standard B has a 2 5 guideway, D, in which works the upright E,
having the swivel-head c.
F is a lever, forked at its forward end, f, so as to encompass the upright E under the swivel-head 0. This lever F is fulcrumed in the upper part, c, of the standard 0, and its longer end is provided with a connecting-rod, Gr, connecting it with a secondor hand lever, H, hinged to the standard 0. It will be seen that this arrangement forms a compound lever 5 by means of which a great weight can be raised on the head e. The upright E is provided with teeth 6, placed on opposite sides thereof, the teeth on the one side coming in between the teeth on the other.
I is a link secured in the upper part of the standard B and held in place by the plate 1'. The lower portion of this link passes through a slot, 70, in between the standards B and C,
so as to have a swinging motion and engage with the teeth 0. It will thus be seen that if the compound lever is operated the upright E is raised, and the lower portion of the link engages the teeth and keeps said upright elevated. By raising the handle the forked end of the lever F is lowered on the standard to a point below one of the holes a, and by insert- :ing the pin K the upright E may be raised the distance of another tooth, and so on to the limit of the jack. Areversal of this operation lowers the jack and releases the load.
The device being a very simple, effective one, it will readily be understood without further description. v
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a lifting-jack, the base A, provided with standards B and O, and the levers F and H and connecting-rod G, in combination with the upright E and link I, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a lifting-jack, the combination of the compound levers with the upright E, having teeth 6 and adjusting-holes a, and the standards B (3, provided with the link Iand pin K, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 18th day of 0c tober, 1882.
LEWELLYN 1). Jonas.
Witnesses E. H. BRADFORD, H. J. ENNIs.
