NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SMITH GRANT, OF LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND.
HOlSTlNG-BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,821, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed February 17, 1883.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SMITH GRANT, of Lincoln, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Hoisting-Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in an improvement in the construction of self-loading buckets for hoisting coal from the hold of vessels, as hereinafter fully set forth; and the object of my improvement is to increase the closing force of such buckets by an increase of leverage.
Figure l is a plan view, Fig. 2 an end elevation, and Fig. 3 a side elevation, of the bucket in its closed condition; and Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the bucket in its opened condition.
In the drawings, A A are the two jaws of the bucket, pivoted to each other by means of a bar, B, extending from one end of the bucket to the other.
To the outer side of the ends of thejaw A are secured the arms G O, and to the inner side of the ends of the jaw A are secured the arms 0 G.
The shaft D is supported by means of the arms E E, which are secured to the bar B and joined to each other by the semi-cylindrical connection 6.
A central opening,f, is made in the connection e, above which are placed the frictionrolls H H, supported by the side pieces, G G.
Upon the outer ends of the shaft D are placed the pulleys I I, upon the peripheries of which are set the staples jj, from which connection is made to the arms 0 U by means of the ropes or chains J J, which are made to pass from the ends of the arms 0 to the under side of the pulleys I I, and from the ends of the arms 0 to the upper side of the p ulleys I I.
To the staple k on the pulley F is secured the hoisting rope or chain K, which passes between the friction-rolls H H, and thence over a pulley at the head of a derrick-boom to one of the hoisting-drums of an engine.
To the upper ends of the rods L L, connected to the opposite upper edges of the bucket, is joined the rope or chain M, which is to pass (No model.)
over a pulley at the head of a derrick-boom to the other hoisting-drum of an engine.
The ropes or chains J J are held in a groove, m, at the ends of the arms (3 O, and are secured to the arms 0 O by means of the screw it, which passes loosely through the eye 0, and is provided with a nut, 19, whereby the length of the rope or chain connection with the pulleys I I may be adjusted as required.
By holding the rope or chain M and slack ing away on the rope or chain K the bucket will be thrown open, as shown in Fig. 4, and then by slacking on the rope or chain M and hoisting on the rope or chain K the bucket will be closed upon its load of coal with considerable force, owing to the length of the arms 0 C, which serve to operate the jaws of the bucket.
Upon the pivot-bar D, and between thearms O G, is constructed the pocket N, adapted to receive a sufficient weight of pig-iron or other suitable material to properly weight the bucket to hold it in the coal while thejaws are being brought together by hoisting on the rope or chain K. The bucket is to be arranged on a derrick, so as to swing over the hatch of the vessel, and thence to the wharf with its load of coal.
I claim as my invention 1. In a hoisting-bucket, the combination of the pivoted jaws A A with the lever-arms G 0, arms E E, shaft D, pulley F on the shaft D inside of the arms E E, and pulleys I I on the shaft D outside of the arms E E, ropes or chains J J, which serve to connect the arms 0 O with the pulleys I I, and the hoisting ropes or chains K and M, substantially as described.
2. In a hoisting-bucket, the combination of the pivoted jaws A A with the lever-arms O 0, arms E E, shaft D, pulley F, and pulleys I I, ropes or chains J J, which serve to connect the arms 0 O with the pulleys I I, hoisting ropes or chains K and M, and weight-pocket N, substantially as described.
SMITH GRANT.
