ROTARY ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,819, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed August 19, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J AGOB Gonnnnve, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable IniprovementinRotaryEngines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of referenee marked thereon.

This invention has relation to rotary engines designed to be operated by steam or water power; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the concentric circular grooves in the sides of the body-casting and the steamways in said casting, the revolving flanges carrying piston-heads, which work in the outer grooves, the recessed cut-off roller, and the connecting-gear, whereby the pistonflanges and cut-01f roller are revolved in unison, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the middle casting or body portion of the engine, in which are formed the steamway a and the exhaust-way b. In the sides of thisbody-castingaretbrmed concentric grooves o and chambers or ways at and e, the groove 0, in which the piston-head revolves, being outermost. The middle way or chamber, d, is the valve-seat, and, communicating with the steamway and the inner way, 6, leads to the exhaustway. Through the outer wall oftheohambered way d openings 9 and g are formed, to serve as the steam and exhaust ports, and through the inner wall of this way an exhaust-opening, h, is formed in an intermediate position. In the chambered way (I is the steam-valve it, having a central opening, l, for the exhaust.
B B represent the lateral revolving flanges, which are arranged on the sides of the body A in such a manner as to close the grooves of said body. Each flange B carries a pistonhead, 0, which fits neatly in the outer lateral groove, 0, of the body and revolves therein. The flanges B B are connected by a shaft, D,
to which they are rigidly keyed, said shaft extending laterally at m, in order to be connected with the machinery designed to be operated by this engine. In grooves made in the inside face of each flange B, on each side of the piston head 0, and extending concentrically around said insideface, are seated theannular packing-rim gs n,which are supported by springs in the grooves in any customary manner.
E represents an upper incasemcnt, which is bolted to the top of the body-casting A. In this incasement is formed a cylindrical chamber, F, in which is arranged a rotary cylinder, G, having a shaft, 19, which is journaled in bearings r in the ends of the cylinder-case E.
Recesses H are made diametrically opposite to each other in the opposite sides of the curved surface of the cylinder, said recesses being open at their outer ends, as shown in the drawings at s. The depth of each recess is equal to the radial thickness of the pistonheadsO, which are also arranged diametrically opposite to each other on each side of the engine. The curved surface of the cylinder is tangent to the curved outer surfaces of the inner walls, t, of the outer circular grooves of the body-casting A, and the surface of said cylinder or roller G is designed to be constantly in contact with that portion, 25, of said wall it which lies between the ports or openings g and g of said wall, except when the recesses H pass in revolution by said portion t of this wall. In this manner the roller G acts as a cut-off behind the piston-head. By means of gearing K the shaftp of the roller is connected to the shaft D of the revolving flanges B B, so that the recesses H will be brought opposite the ports 9 and g at the same time, respectively, that the piston-heads (J, in the revolution of said flanges, arrive opposite said ports in their passage around the outer grooves of the bod y-castiug.
L represents a lever, which is connected to a slide-rod, N, which is connected to the valve 10 for this purpose, passing through an opening or channel, 0, made in the body-casting. Instead of coring chambered ways in the bodyoasting for the valve-seat and exhaust-steam way, circular grooves may be formed in the sides of the body, which will serve equally well when properly packed at their edges, and may be preferred in some constructions.
The operation of this engine is as follows: Steam entering through the steamways into the outer channels of the body-casting serves topress thepiston-head 0 forward in the grooves c of the body, causing the flanges B and their shaft D to revolve, and at the same time turning thecut-ofl' roller G. The cylindrical surface of this roller acts as an abutment for the live steam which bears against the heads, serving in this manner up to the points where the roller is recessed, as at H, these recesses allowing the heads to pass, closely followed by the roller-surface, which again cuts 011' the steam behind the heads. The steam passes through the port 9 of the wall t in its active form, and as the head 0 passes in the recess H the ports are closed and again opened, the exhaust g first, and then the roller-surface follows, cutting ofl' the connection between the two ports. The motion of the engine can be reversed at will by moving the valve, which is accomplished by means of the lever L.
