W. P. @"HARA- .SAMPLING TUBE GR LIQUOR THIEF.
Patented Apr.1f 0,1883.`
' @www kUNI-TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. OHARA, OF-CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SMPLING-'TUBE OR LIQUOR-THIEF SPECIFIC'ATIONformng' part of Letters Patent No. 275,694, dated April 10, 1883. Application ined @rune s. iss-2. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern Be itknowu that I, WILLIAM P. OHARA, ot Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Sampling-Tubev or Liquor-Thief', of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to an improved construction ofthe device known as a samplingtube or liquor-thief, which, being inserted through the bung-hole of a cask containing liquor, and liquor being allowed to iow into it is retained therein, soas to enable-withdrawal ofthe instrument with its contents, which may then be, in part or all, delivered through the lower orifice by repetition of the manipulation which permitted it to be charged.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 represents a sampling-tube embodying my invention, a portion of the tube or barrel being shown broken away, so as to expose the working parts. Fig.2 is an axial section, ou a larger scale, through the lower part of the instrument, the valve being shown open.
A is a tube, preferably cylindrical, and having screwed onto its lower end a nozzle, B, that constitutes alternately the inlet and exit orifice of the instrument. Near the tubes lowerend, and just above the said nozzle, is provided an annular seat, O, for a valve of the following construction:
D is a rod or stem, which, passing. through and snugly fitting a hole, e, at the center of a screw-cap, E, and having a knob, F, at its upper extremity, traverses two guide-bridges, G G, within the tube, and has, near its lower end, a collar, H, and a screw-attached gland, I, between which is firmly caught arubber or leather pad or gasket, J, which, with said members H and I, constitutes the valve proper. The rubber or leather gasket J insures a tight closure of the seat O against the passage of liquor in either direction when the valve is shut. A spring, K, secures the automatic closure of the valve whenever the stem D is relieved from the pressure of the users thumb. A small mouth-piece or suckerf'` L, is provided in cap E to enable the user to expedite the charging or discharging of the instrument, as desired, by diminishing or increasing the atmospheric pressure within the tube by his lungs.
Projecting laterally from tube A nearits top, and respectively on remote sides thereof, are a loop or bow, M, and a lip, N, that enable the user to iirmly grasp the instrument with his palmand fingers while pressing with his thumb upon the knob F, and also facilitate the conveyance ot' the instrument from place to place; The valve may be wholly metallic and rest upon a rubber seat, or valve and seat may both be wholly metallic.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. The combination of tube A ,automatically up-closing valve near its mouth, stem extending upwardly from the valve, having a depressing-knob, and a retracting-spring for supporting the valve to its seat, as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, asampling-tube, composed of tube A, nozzle B, valveseat C, cap E, guides G G', up-closing valve, valve-rod D, and valve J, spring K, loop M, lip N, and mouth-piece or sucker L, substantially as set forth.
3. Inaliquor-sampling tube,tl1e mouth-piece or sucker L, projecting exteriorly from and communicating through cap E, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
Y WM. P. OHARA.
