SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,942, dated April 3, 1883. Application filed December 30, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEONHART HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tekamah, in the county of Burt and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sickle-Eyes for Mowing and Reaping Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being 1 a had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention} Fig. 2, a side elevation 1 of the same, and Fig. 3 a detail perspective view of the follower-block. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on line y y of Fig. 1, showing the wedge-shaped flanges ot the followerblock seated on the beveled side'of the co mortise in the sickle-eye. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sickle-eyes for harvesters; and it consists in constructing the same with a beveled mortise to receive a fol 2 lower-block, having wedge-shaped flanges adapted to engage with the beveled sides of and adjustably held within the mortise by suitable means, the shank of the sickle-eye being adapted to receive blank sections and 0 first cutting-section, the objects of the invention-being to prevent breakage of the sickle-eyes, wearing out of shoes and sections by the lost motion and pounding of the pitshank having slots 0, for the reception of the blank, and first cutting-sections, thereby holding said sections firmly in place, and overcoming their liability to work loose or breakoff the rivets. The mortise ct in the sickle-eye A has its sides 0 beveled, and is adapted to receive a follower-block, 0, formed with Wedgeshaped flanges d, which come against the beveled sides 0 of the mortise, to prevent the follower-block from being laterally displaced or turned over. This follower-block G has its outer face concaved to agree with the interior circumference of the eye A, and is kept up against the pitman in this instance by means of a ratcheted set-screw, e, engaging with a spring-pawl,f, though it is obvious that the follower-screw may be locked in place when the block has beenadjtisted by a jam-nut, key, or any other suitable and well-known means..

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The sickle-eye A, having mortise a and slotted shank, in combination with the follower-block O and means, substantially as described, for adjusting the same.

2. The combination, with the sickle-eye A, having a suitable mortise, a, of the followerblock 0, formed with flanges, said block adapted to fit within said mortise, and pro- 7 vided with means for adjusting it, substantially as and forthe purpose specified.

3. The sickle-eye A, having mortise a and bevel sides 0, in combination with the follower-block 0, having wedge-shaped flanges d, and suitable means for adjusting said block within the mortise, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
