Both the above practices possess numerous disadvantages and leave much to be desired. In the casewhere the artists canvas is supported on a wooden frame,: usually of rectangular configuration, the cost thereof is high and itis a bulky, heavy arrangement. Thus, this type of paintbled backing panel, backing sheet andartists canvas and the rear cover sheet;

Figure 6 is a top perspective view thereof. a -The present invention broadly contemplates the provision of an artists painting panel comprisinga backing member formed of a pair of superimposed corrugated sheets, the flutes thereof extending in mutually inclined directions, and an impression-receiving web superimposed upon said corrugated sheets and secured thereto.

In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention, each of the corrugated sheets is sandwiched between two flat sheets to define a corrugated board, the edges of which are reinforced to inhibit the collapse thereof. The two corrugated boards are cemented toeach other along their abutting faces, the corrugations extendingat right angles to each other. The impressionreceiving web consists of a sheet of artists canvas having cemented to the rear face thereof a backing sheet, the opposite face of the backing sheet being in turn cemented to one of the exposed faces of the backing member defined by the pair of corrugated boards. The artists canvas is of greater dimensions thanthe corresponding dimensions of the backing memberandthe borders thereof are folded f rearwardly and thence along the rear face of the backing mg panel isnot popular where outdoor paintings are 'executed-on the site because cost is a factor.

On the other hand, theartists painting panel,;,of the type wherein the artists canvas is permanently cemented to a fiberboard backing, is highly convenient, easy to transport and of little bulk and weight, and low in cost. However, it possesses a great disadvantage in that it is subject to Warping and deformation unless it is likewise properly reinforced by a frame. When a frame reinforcement is employed, it no longer possesses the advantages for-which it was originally preferred.

It is thus a principal object of the present invention to provide an improved artistsdevice.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved artists painting panel.

Still another object of the present invention is to pro-" vide an improved artists painting panel characterized by its lightweight and ease of reception of color media. I

A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved artists painting panel characterized by its ability to maintain its shape over prolonged and indefinite periods and under various atmospheric conditions.

Still a further object of the present invention is to provide an improved artists painting panel which is rugged,

convenient and elficient to employ and carry, is adaptable to various conditions, and is low in cost.

The above and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from a reading of the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view partially broken away for clarity of illustration of the backing member of the improved panel;

Figure 2 is a perspective view partially broken away of the resolved artists canvas provided with a backing sheet applied thereto;

Figure 3 is a partially exploded perspective view of the member to which it is also secured. The'cpver sheet is then applied to the back face and overlaysthe edges of the canvas to complete the panel. 1

Reference is now made to the drawing'which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the present invention, wherein I the numeral 10 generally designates the assembled backing member including a pair of corrugated boards 12, each formed of a fluted or corrugated sheet 14 sandwiched between' a pairof flat sheets 16 in the conventional manner. 'The'edges of the corrugated board 12 are reinforced by a layer or thinwall of'a suitable reinforcing material 18 formedof clay or any-other substance which will harden or set and which will preferably effect a moisture tight seal along the edges of the corrugated board 12 as well as imparting to said edges arigid structure. The corrugated boards 12 are of rectangular configuration as illustrated, or of any other desired shape, and are superimposed and secured to each other by a layer of cement applied between their abutting faces. It is important to note that the corrugations or flutes of the two sheets are arranged perpendicular to each other in order to inhibit warping or similar deformation.

The impression-receiving web 20 is likewise of rectangular configuration, the dimensions thereof being greater than the corresponding dimensions of the backing member 10, and the corners thereof being bevelled to permit the application of the web 26 to the backing panel 10 and the folding over of the overhanging borders of the web 20 to overlay the rear of the panel 10 as illustrated in the drawing; The web 20 may be formed of the conventional artists canvas, velour or other fabric, cloth, plastic or other material normally employed in paintings or drawings.

Inasmuch as the face of the conventional corrugated board is of irregular contour, it is desirable to apply to the rear face of the web 20 a backing sheet 22 formed of smooth cardboard or the like, which is cemented to the rear face of the Web 20 and is of the same configuration as the backing panel 10. Thereafter, a rectangular sheet of finishing material 24, which is formed of paper or the like, is cemented to the rear Wall of the panel overlaying the corresponding borders of the webbing 20 and being preferably of slightly smaller dimensions than the rear of the panel.

The painting panel, constructed in accordance with the present invention, possesses the desirable features of the conventional painting panels without their accompanying drawbacks. It is of light weight, rigid, easy to mount, not subject to warping or other deformations, and inexpensive. Moreover, it presents an excellent painting surface superior tothat heretofore available.

While there has been described and illustrated a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is apparent that numerous alterations and omissions may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.

I claim:
