Description

NOMnde1.).
G. W. MEASON.
NUT LOOK.
Patented Mr. 13,1883
INVENTOR WITNESSES &
UNITED STATES I CHARLES W. MEASON, OF WALNUT, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES M. GOFF, OF SAME PLACE.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,871, dated March 13, 1883.
Application filed January 18, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, CHARLES W. MEASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walnut, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Nut- Lock, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying draw lugs.
This invention relates to nut-locks for railroad fish-joints and for other purposes where it is desirable or necessary to secure nuts against working loose by the shaking of the parts to which they are attached; and it has forits object to provide a simple and con venient r5 device, which may be readily applied or detached, as will be herein-after fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my improved 2o nut-lock applied to a railroad fish-joint Fig.
2 is-a horizontal sectional view of the same.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both figures.
Ain the drawings designates the rail, B the fish-plate, C the bolt, and D the nut, all of which are of the usual well-known construction.
E is a Hat spring, which is bent so as to form two leaves, F G, the lower one of which, F, 0 which is the shortest, is provided near its end with a. perforation, H, to receive the bolt, upon which the said springis adjusted in such a manner that its upper leaf, G, shall extend over the said bolt and terminate between the nuts of two adjoining bolts. Between the said 5 nuts, which are screwed down tightly, is placed a block, K, the ends of which may be either square orheveled, so as to abut against the sides or edges of the nuts, which are thereby prevented from turning. The face of the 4.0 block K has a longitudinal groove or recess,
L, to receive the end of the upper leaf of the spring E, which serves to hold the said block securely in position, the spring itself being held by the nut upon the bolt upon which it is adjusted. When desired, by simply releasing the pressure of the spring, the block K maybe easily removed for the purpose of permitting the nuts to be unscrewed.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a nut'lock, the combination, with a flat spring bent so as to form two leaves of unequal length, the lower short one of which is provided with a bolt-hole, of a block having a longitudinal groove or recess to receive the end of the upper spring, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES WILLIAM MEASON.
