Feb. 28, 1956 P. GORMLEY WINDOW SCAFFOLD 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed June 24, 1952 INVENTOR. PATQ \CK GORMLEY Mum A'TTQQHEYS United States Patent 2,736,615 wtnnow SCAFFO'LD Patrick Gormley, Corona, N. Y. Application June 24, 1952, Serial No. 295,148 1 Claim. c1. 304-27 ,This invention relates to improvements in window scaffolds, and more particularly to an improved window scaffold of the type adapted to be supported outside of a window for use in window washing, painting, or the like.
The main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved window scaffold which is simple in construction, which is easy to set up for use, and which provides a safe support outside a window for a person engaged in repairing or washing the window or painting the woodwork adjacent to the window.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved foldable window scaffold which involves inexpensive components, which is sturdy in construction, and which may be readily and easily set up for use.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an outside view of a portion of a building adjacent a window, showing an improved window scaffold according to the present invention set up for use.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal cross sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the various components of the window scaffold assembly in separated positions.
Referring to the drawings, the scaffold assembly comprises an anchoring frame, shown generally at 11 which comprises a pair of vertical bar members 12, 12 and a horizontal cross bar 13 rigidly secured to the vertical bar members 12, 12, by means of respective flanged brackets 14, 14 and fastening bolts 15, 15. As shown in Figure 3, the brackets 14 are provided with respective pairs of flanges adapted to embrace the horizontal bar 13 and the adjacent vertical bar member 12 so as to prevent relative rotation between the horizontal bar 13 and the vertical bar members, and the bolt 15 passes through the horizontal bar member, the Web portion of the brackets 14 and the vertical post to lock the vertical posts 12 and horizontal bar 13 together. The vertical bar members 12, 12 are adapted to be supported on the floor at the inside of a window, as shown in Figure 2, and the horizontal bar 13 is greater in length than the width of the window, whereby it serves to prevent the frame 11 from being pulled through the window. Secured on the horizontal bar 13 inwardly spaced from the respective vertical bar members 12, 12 are the respective collar brackets 16, 16 having secured thereto the respective chain links 17, 17 to which are connected the respective turnbuckle members 18, 18.
Designated at 19 is a rectangular platform, and positioned transversely of the platform adjacent to and spaced from each end of the latter is an upstanding right triangular frame member 20, the frame member having the base leg 20' connected to the platform for movement from the upstanding position to a horizontal ice position. Each frame member 20 also includes a short leg 20" and a hypotenuse leg 20". Connected to the ends of the turnbuckle members 18, 18, are the respective conventional spring hooks 22, 22 which are engageable with the connection point of the short leg 20" with the hypotenuse leg 20" as indicated by the numeral 21 of the frames 20 in the manner shown in Figure 2, whereby the platform 19 may be supported in a substantially horizontal position, adjusted by means of the adjustable turnbuckles 18, 18, the rear edge of the platform 19 being in abutment with the wall below the window, as shown in Figure 2. It is to be noted that the assembly consisting of chain link 17, the turnbuckle 18, and spring hook 22 constitutes a flexible hanger member.
Secured to the forward marginal portion of the platform 19 are the spaced inverted U-shaped brackets 24 arranged to receive the forward transversely extending stud elements 25 of the respective upstanding guard frames 26, 26. As shown in Figure 4, each guard frame 26 comprises the vertical leg 27, the downwardly and rearwardly inclined leg 2S integrally connected with the vertical leg 27, and the inwardly inclined brace leg 28 which extends downwardly and inwardly from the intermediate portion of the vertical leg 27 and is provideo at its end with a transversely extending stud element 25. The lower ends of the inclined legs 28 are likewise provided with transversely extending stud elements 29 which extend in the same direction as the stud elements 25 and which are engageable in inverted U-shaped bracket elements 30 secured to the rear corner portions of the platform 19. It- Will be readily apparent that the guard frames 26 may be engaged in the bracket members 24 and 30 by inserting the stud elements 25 and 29 in said bracket members and moving the guard frames forwardly to the positions thereof shown in Figure 4.
Designated at 32 is a rail member formed at its bottom edge with the respective notches 33, 33 adapted to lockingly engage with respective offset bracket members 34, 34 secured to the top portions of the vertical legs 27, 27. With the bar 32 engaged with the offset brackets 34, 34 a substantially complete enclosure is provided around the side and forward marginal portions of the platform 19, and this enclosure is rigidified by the combined effects of the horizontal top bar 32 and the inclined strut elements 28, 28.
The platform 19 is provided at the intermediate portion of its forward margin with a handle 35 to facilitate transportation of the platform when the scaffold is being erected or being transported from place to place.
In setting up the scaffold, it is merely necessary to place the anchoring frame 11 inwardly adjacent the window and to engage the spring hooks 22 with the top portions 21 of the frame members 20 with the platform 19 disposed outside the window, as shown in Figure 2. The platform 19 may be adjusted to its desired position by adjusting the turnbuckles 18. The platform 19 will thus be supported with its rear edge in abutment with the wall below the window. The guard frames 26 may then be mounted on the platform in the manner shown in Figure 4 with the transversely extending stud elements 25 and 29 engaged in the respective bracket members 24 and 30. The top bar 32 may then be engaged with the offset bracket members 34, said bracket members being lockingly received in the notches 33 to complete the assembly. The scaffold is then ready for use for any desired purpose, such as window washing, glazing, puttying, or painting, Without requiring the use of a ladder or a window belt.
While a specific embodiment of an improved window scaffold has been disclosed in the foregoing description,
3 it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In a scaffold, a platform, a pair of right triangular guard frames having base sides secured to the platform, said guard frames having apex portions, brackets on said guard frames near said apex portions of the guard frames, and a guard rail extending between the guard frames and removably and securably engaging the brackets, said guard frames extending crosswise of the platform, hinge means securing the guard frame to the platform, and braces on the guard frames engageable with the platform for holding the guard frames against pivoting inwardly beyond erect positions, the engagement of the guard rail with the brackets serving to preclude outward pivoting of the guard frames out of erect position.
