(ci. 12s- 1) This invention relates to a writing or sketch board adapted for use with a coil wire bound pack of sheets, as a spiral wire bound notebook of blank or lined sheets intended for writing or drawing of any nature.
An object of the invention is to provide mechanism on a rigid panel board for the attachment of a coil wire bound notebook. thereto and for hanging the same in a position to support the pack of sheets in at condition at either side of the board or for supporting some of the sheets on one side while other sheets of the stackv are swung for iiat supporting contact at the other side thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide mechanism for the ready insertion and removal of a coil wire binder on a writing board and to provide a double hinging action in such a mechanism.
Writing boards of the type herein disclosed are adapted for the user to support the same in his hand, or on his forearm or lap to alford a rigid supporting surface against which the sheets may be laid for writing and other similar purposes and where a table or desk surface is unavailable. The above and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the same as shown by the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a partial top plan view with parts cut away of a writing board with a spiral wire bound notebook mounted in position thereon;
Fig. 2 is a partial top plan view of the writing board with the spiral wire notebook of Fig. 1 in a position for removing or attaching the same on the mounting mechanism of the board;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modification of the movable retaining member of the mounting mechanism shown at the right of Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is an end edge elevation of Fig. 1 showing a spiral wire bound notebook hanging on one side of the board; and
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the notebook hanging against the opposite side 0f the board.
In the drawings a rigid flat panel board member 1 is shown with a spiral wire notebook having a stack of sheets 2 held between covers 3 on a spiral wire 4. The panel board member may be of wood, plastic, composition board, or any other suitable material providing sutiicient rigidity to serve as a supporting surface for writing purposes. A spiral wire bound notebook is herein shown for purposes of illustrating the`use of the board but it will be understood that any coil wire type of binding may be used in which the sheets are provided with a series of spaced marginal perforatons along one edge and through which a spiral is wound or through which other types of ring wires are passed such as wire coils arranged perpendicular to the axis of the binder element and usually connected by wire portions parallel to the axis.
At one edge of the board 1 a hinge leaf member, as the metallic mounting strip 5, is attached to the marginal portion of the board as by the rivets 6. The strip 5 provides along opposite end portions of the edge and 2 centrally spaced by the recess indicated at 7 a pair of axially aligned pintle receiving sleeve members 8 and 9. The sleeves are formed as will be seen from Figs. 3, 4 and 5 by rolled portions of the strip 5 extending beyond the edge of the panel and inwardly turned back against the edge.
The spaced bearing sleeves are adapted to carry the retaining members on which the coil wire element is hung, as the spiral wire 4. The retaining members are in the form of bent wire rods. In sleeve 8 an inner pintle portion 10 of the retaining rod member at the left as in Figs. 1 and 2 is pivotally mounted with the outer end thereof being reversely bent as at 11 and the outer Irod portion 12 lying inwardly extended in closely spaced overlying relation to the outer surface of the sleeve 8. The.
outer tip end portion ofwire 12 is angled as at 13 to' provide for the'easer entrance and insertion thereof at the largement for preventing longitudinal movement of the` wire 10 in the sleeve.
The oppositely positioned sleeve 9 receives an inner pintle portion 15 (Fig. 2) of the other retainer member, the wire 15 being reversely bent to lie normally along the outer portion thereof in closely spaced overlying relation to the sleeve 9. As shown by Fig. 2 the outer portion of the wire is again reversely bent to form a doubled outer extension as indicated at 17. The free end portion of the Y extension 17 projects outfwardly as at 18 beyond the bend 16 and terminates in an olset finger tab loop as at 19.
At its inner end the inner pintle wire portion 15 projects inwardly into the recess 7 beyond the sleeve 9. The inner end extension indicated at 20 (Fig. l) terminates in a pinchedtip 21 and around said extension is wound a coil spring 22 held between abutments formed by the tip 21 and the inner end of the sleeve 9 for yieldably biasing the wire 15 inwardly of its sleeve 9. As shown by Fig. 2 the offset tab 19 is for finger manipulation of the retaining rod member and the outer withdrawal of the portion 17 beyond the outer edges of sleeve 9. Thus, the coil wire binding element of a notebook to be mounted on the board may be assembled by the telescopic insertion at one end thereof of the wire 12 and the snapping of the portion 17 into the opposite end when the latter end is brought into axial registration therewith. It will be noted that the extension 20 beyond the inner end of sleeve 9 is substantially the same as or of greater length than the portion 17 so that the latter may be withdrawn to an outwardly offset position at the outer end of the sleeve 9.
The outer portions 12 and 17 of the retaining members form in the assembly of a coil wire binder on the board a pair of aligned outer pintle portions for the hinging action of the binder element 4 on said portions as an axis. Thus with the hinged connection of the inner wire portions held in the sleeves a double hinge action is provided for manipulation of the binder. In Fig. 4 the notebook is shown suspended at one side of the board for writing on sheets laid against the surface thereof, while in Fig. 5 the notebook is hung at the other side of the board for writing on sheets laid against the surface of the opposite side. It will be seen that the axis of the coiled spiral wire 4 may be swung to any intermediate position between the two shown and that at a position approximately midway of the two, that is, substantially in the plane of the board, the covers and sheets of the pack may be separated Patented Jan. 31, 1956-- for disposition on both sides of the board. This may be of advantage in handling the board andv particularly where it may be inconvenient to have an uppermost cover and sheets hanging-` loosely from the edge of. the board when writing, on or referring to one of. the inner sheets ofthe pack.
In Fig. 3. a modified form of the outerV pintle-portion-A of the movable retaining member is shown..
