Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Orrica.
JOHN R. CARTER, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
'MEMORANDUM-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,223, dated February 27, 188? Application filed February 18, 1882. (No model.)
I To all whom it may concern i vided withv attachments arranged to hold the leaves in position while permitting their ready adjustment and removal.
It consists of a cover having a single joint in the center and provided with a spring bail extending across the center of the cover and connected on either side thereof, the said bail being coiled at or near its connection with'the back to hold theleaveslaterally, and provided with spikes across its center to tit into perforations made across theleaves.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the memorandum-book open, and Fig. 2 isa similarview with the leaves arranged to exhibit my improved index-hold on the inside of one cover. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a portion of my memorandum-book. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of my cover with the back removed. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, showing the flexible joint between the stiffback and the side.
My invention relates to that class of memorandum-books in which a black leaf is employed for the purpose of transferring onto one page a memorandum Written on another; but as my presentinvention has no immediate connection with the black leaf, I do not exhibitit in the drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is a cover, provided with a stiff curved back, a, extending from one half of the cover, the other half of the cover being flexibly connected to the top edge of this curved back. The flexible joint maybe made by confining the stilt back and loose cover by leather strips, as shown in Fig. 5, although any other known form of flexible joint may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention. By this arrangementastiifcurved backisprovided,
against whichthe leaves of the memorandumstiff back a.
, withdrawn.
book may be held. At the sametime the cover may be opened in the usual manner.
B is a wire bail secured at either end to one half of the book by the rivets O. This bail, it will be noticed, extends across the inside of the cover immediately in front of the curved It will further be noticed that the end of the bail near the rivet is coiled to form a projecting side on the cover, in order to hold the leaves forming the memorandumbook and prevent their lateral displacement. In the views shown in the drawings only one end of the bail is visible; but it will of course he understood that the end not shown is similarly shaped, a projecting side being thus formed oneither edge of the cover.
The leaves of paper forming the memorandum book marked D are not bound together,
but are perforated across their center, in order that they may be easily torn at that point. In order to holdthe leaves together, and at the same time retain them in position in the cover, 1 form along the bail B a series of smallspikes, I). These spikes are designed to fit through the perforations in the leaves, and in this way hold them together as wellasin position in the book. Owing to the mannerin which the bail B is held, it can easily be sprung open to permit the adjustment of the leaves beneath it, and as it is designed to spring toward the curved back a, the leaves, when arranged below it, as represented, are held in the desired position, and owing to the stiff curved back they are not worn at the point where perforated by the opening and shutting of the cover.
' In this class of memorandum-books,in which the leaves written upon are torn out, it is desirable that an index should be provided in the cover to indicate the contents of each page With that view I provide the index E, which consists of a sheet of paper having printed upon its surface in one column a series of numbers indicating the pages of the memorandum-book. Opposite to each number a space is left for the insertion of the name of the-customer to whom the sale has been made, as recorded on therespective page withdrawn. Opposite to the space vertical columns are arranged to receive the amount of each sale, a space being left at the top of the page for the ICC name ornumber of the salesman and the department in which he is acting. This sheet of paper is inserted under pieces of springbrass, 01, held on the inside of the cover and extend ing across it, as indicated. These pieces of brass (1, While holding the index in position, permit its easy removal and replacement by other sheets when the particular index has been filled up.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, with a book-cover, ot'a bent Wire bail secured at each end to one side of one half of the cover at a sufficient distance from the back thereof to allow its center portion to rest with a spring'pressure entirely across and against said cover, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a book-cover consisting of two sections and a back with a bent Wire bail secured at its ends into one of the sections, and having spikes across the center to operate in perforations made in the leaves, the said bail having spring actionagainst the back, as specified.
3. The combination of the coverAa with the bail B, secured at both ends to one of the sections, and provided at each side with a coil, for the double purpose of giving elasticity to the bail and to form projections to prevent displacement of the leaves, as specified.
