Description

Jan. 3, 1956 R. WALDMAN 2,729,371
GARMENT HANGER Filed July 18, 1952 INVENTOR. RosE WALDMAN United States Patent" O GARMENT HANGER Rose Waldman, Jersey City, N. J. Application July 18, 1952, Serial No. 299,544 1 Claim. 01. 223-89) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes hangers, garment hangers or coat hangers adapted to hold mens suits.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved unitary hanger having an arched shoulder bar and a horizontal bar spaced from the shoulder bar by a single inclined member to permit a coat, jacket or blouse to be hung on the hanger first as it is taken olf and trousers to be hung on the horizontal bar without removing the other garment.
Another object of the presentinvention proposes forming the hanger with a dependent horizontal bar having a free end and spaced from the shoulder bar so that trousers may be put on the hanger and removed from it without pulling them through the hanger and so that trousers on the horizontal bar will hang fully visible in front of the coat or other garment on the shoulder bar making it unnecessary to open the coat or other garment to see if trousers are on the hanger.
Still further, the present invention proposes constructing the hanger with an inclined member between the shoulder and horizontal bars to extend from a} coat, hung on the shoulder bar, between its lapels to dispose the horizontal bar and trousers thereon exteriorly of the coat with the coat bearing against the inclined member and the trousers on the horizontal bar thereby holding the lapels of the coat in smooth condition.
As a further object, the present invention proposes arranging the hanger so that trousers, shorts or other such garments may be hung on the horizontal bar. Skirts or similar garments may be hung or clipped on it or removed easily and conveniently without disturbing or removing the garment hung on the shoulder bar of the hanger.
The present invention further proposes a novel arrangement of hanger structure which is simple, attractive, compact, efficient and durable and which can be economically manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The hanger, in accordance with the first form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, has an complement the shoulders of a coat-type garment such as the coat 16 of the suit shown in Fig. 1. A hook 17, of wire or similar material, is swivelly connected to the upper or shoulder'bar at its central portion and projects above the shoulder bar in the conventional manner.
Rigidly connected to one end of the shoulder bar 15 is an inclined s-shape'd member 18, the upper end 19 of the member 18 being secured to end 20 of the shoulder bar 15.
The inclined S-shaped member 18 is connected to a lower and horizontal bar2l, the lower end 22 of the member'18 being connected with one end, 23, of the horizontal bar 21. Thejfother end, 24, of the lower or horizontal bar is free and underlies end 20 of the shoulder bar 15 to which'the upper end 19 of the inclined member 18 is secured. 'By this arrangement, the arched shoulder bar 15 has a dependent horizontal bar spaced from it by a single inclined member 18, the shoulder bar 15, memberf18 and horizontal bar 21 being in the same vertical plane;
The shoulder bar 15,-?inclined member 18 and horizontal bar 21 preferably are integral and of homogenous material for, asingle unitary hanger structure. The material maybe W d... distal, plastic or the like. The shoulder bar 15, memb e'r 18 and horizontal bar 21 are all T-shaped in cross-s'c'tion having upper flanges 25, 26 and 27 respectively with lower stems 28, 29 and 30 respectively.
Inclined member l8' jprojects from the under edge or lower stem 25 of shoulder bar 15, the upper edge or flange 26 of the member l8 projecting at a substantial inclination downwardly from a point near end 20 of the shoulder bar 15. The lower end 22 of the inclined member 18 is curled about to form the horizontal bar 21 which extends in the opposite direction.
By this construction, the coat 16 of the suit shown in Fig. 1 may be placed on the shoulder bar 15 in the usual manner but with the downwardly inclined member 18 extending out of the coat between the lapels and the horizontal bar 21 is disposed outside the coat across the front of the garment. When the hanger is suspended by its book, the coat will be urged by gravity toward the vertical plane of the hanger and will abut and press against the member 18 and horizontal bar 21 of the hanger. These hanger elements will maintain the lapels of the coat in a smooth condition.
Trousers 31 of the suit may he slid onto the horizontal bar 21 at its free end 24 without disturbing the coat 16 and will be supported externally of the coat on the horizontal bar 21. The trousers 31 extend down wardly in front of the coat pressed against it and this frictional contact retains the trousers on the bar 21 and prevents them from slipping from the bar.
This construction is such that with a coat in position on the hanger and the hanger suspended from the usual bar in a closet or the like, it is possible to hang a pair of trousers over the bar 21 without having to remove the hanger from the closet. Merely swinging the hanger in a direction so that the coat moves away from the side of the horizontal bar 21 leaves a clear space between the amasft bar and; the coat so" that" trousers can be slipped into position then be released and will be drawn back to its hanging position by the weight of the garments on it, thetrou sers bearing againstthet coat to; preventi-them= from falling from the hanger and holding the lapels of the coat in that; unwrinklectposition. i
The modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 4- and 5 is characterized. bythe provision of an'arcnate shoulder bar 32 of elliptical crosssection having a hook- 33- swivelly attached toi'itland-isirnilanint all'iother aspccts to shoulder bar illustrated in Figs. 1 to. 3, inclusive An. inclined S-shapect membenBstj rou'ndzim cross section, connects ahorizontaltbar. 35:16 theshouldenbar 32 inthesarne mannercas described-:above; The-.sirnple-formof; these; elements L permits: the hanger-:10 be. made. at aminimum cost. While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention it;is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the pre cise constructions herein disclosed and the right is res'erved'to all changes and modifications coming; within; the. scope ofthe invention as defined in the appended c laim.
Having'thus described my invention, what I. claim as new and desire to secure-by United States Letters Patent A garment hanger comprising an arcuate shoulder bar, a wire hook centrally attached to the shoulder bar, an s-shaped member having one end pivotally secured to the shoulder bar at one-end ofsaid bar with a diagonal downward=inclination.toward the other end of the bar, a straight bar pivotally secured to thelower end-of the inclined- S -shaped member; meanstothold the S-shaped member in its.inclinedposition and means tohold the straight: bar extending substantially horizontally from thetlower end of: the- S-shaped member toward the securedaend of;theshoulder. bar; said 'means to hold the- Seshaped member beingtanpimfixed tosaid member toabut the upper edge-of the .shouldenbar when said member isin its' inclinedposition. and said: means to hold'thc straight bar horizontal being. anabutmentstud, fixed to the straightbar at its secureclend andwadaptedzto abut aslot formed intthe .upper edge:.of.;the:inclined. member when the. straight .,bar isthorizontallyl disposed,
