4 Claims. (Cl. 211-137) The present invention relates to display devices.
Generally, the invention comprises display devices formed of flat material such as cardboard or the like and which have in common certain peculiarities in the folding and bending thereof whereby to present in final form substantially rigid devices of this nature having novel means for maintaining themselves in a substantially rigid and upright position and whereby novel and attractive contours are provided for the supporting and displaying in an attractive manner articles to be placed therein without the necessity of supporting easels and the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a display device which has novel contours in the completed articles wherein vertical support and rigidity is imparted thereto.
It is another object of the invention to provide in a display device a novel article-supporting means.
It is another object of the invention to provide a display device which has a decorative background and which has curves in both horizontal and vertical planes.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a display device which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, is easy to assemble, and of pleasing appearance and efiicient in use.
For a better understanding of the invention reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the blanks utilized in the construction of the device illustrated in Fig. 1,

Fig. 5 is a reduced sectional view taken substantially along line 5-5 of Fig. 1,

Referring now particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, a display device formed of two blanks generally indicated at 10 and 11, the former forming the body of the device while the latter forms, in the completed article, a support for articles to be displayed in the device. Both blanks are formed States Patent I O til of sheet material, such as cardboard or the like, and may be scored and cut and shipped in a fiat condition to be assembled at the point of destination into their completed form illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The body 10 is formed of a lower portion or panel 12 having a straight lower edge 13 and a curved arcuate scored upper edge 14 at which point is connects integrally with an intermediate curvular portion or a rearwardlycircumfiexed flange 15 which is, in turn, joined to the lower end of an upwardly extending upper portion 16, a curvular line of scoring 17 forming a forward edge of the portions 15 and 16.
In the lower portion 12, there is provided adjacent each corner thereof, a vertically extending slot 18 and upwardly and inwardly of each of the slots 18 there is provided a vertical slot 19. The article-support member 11 is best illustrated in its blank form in Fig. 4 and is provided with horizontally-extending lower edge 20 and a curvular upper edge 21. Three parallel horizontally-extending fold lines 22, 23 and 24 divide the blank 11 into four panels 25, 26, 27 and 28.
The panel 25 is provided with a centrally and vertically extending tab 29 while the panel 26 is provided at each end with a horizontally and outwardly extending tab 30. The panel 28 is provided with an outwardly and upwardly extending tab 31 at each end thereof.
In assembling this form of the invention, the intermediate portion or flange 15 of the body 10 is first bent or flexed rearwardly upon the scoring line 14 while at the same time the upper portion 16 is bent or flexed forwardly upon the scoring line 17 and the body as a whole bent in such manner that the sides thereof are extended forwardly toward each other thus imparting a rearwardly concaved vertically extending shape to the entire body when viewed in horizontal cross section as shown in Fig. 5. When this is accomplished, the portions 12 and 15 of the body 10 become substantially V-shaped when viewed in vertical cross sectional area as is clear from the showing in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When this has been accomplished, the tab, 29 is bent downwardly and glued or otherwise affixed to the central portion of the forward face of the lower section 12 of the body 10, as indicated at 32 in Fig. 2. At this time the tabs 30 are inserted into the slots 19 as the panel 26 is bent upon the fold line 22 to a vertical position. Thereafter the panel 28 is bent to a vertical position upon the fold line 24 while the panel 27 is bent to a horizontal position upon the fold line 23 and the tabs 31 are inserted inwardly and upwardly into the slots 18 thus locking the entire device into a unit. In this condition it will be apparent that the lower edge 13 of the body together with the lower edge 20 of the article supporting member 11 will both rest upon any flat surface upon which the device is placed thus supporting the device quite stably in a vertical position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It will also be apparent that the V-shaped configuration imparted to the upper portion of the section 12 together with the intermediate section 15 will impart substantial rigidity to the thus assembled device. Likewise, it will be seen that various decorative matter or advertising data may be placed upon the forward face of the upper section 16 of the body 10 while articles to be displayed or advertised may be positioned upon the panels 25 and 27. Again, it will be noted that the tabs 30 are merely for positioning and then holding the panels 25 and 26 in their proper position in the assembled article while the tabs 31 perform the additional function of locking the entire device together as a unit.
In Figs. 6 to 10, inclusive, there is shown a form of the invention in which there is provided a central panel having a horizontallyextending straight lower edge 41 and an upwardly-extending arcuate upper edge defined by a line of scoring 42 which joins the same with an upper panel 43 whose upper edge 44 is parallel to the line of scoring 42. The sides of the panel terminate in straight vertical scoring lines 45 which connect the same with side panels 46 which, in turn, connect by means of vertical scoring lines 47 with four short rear panels 48 having vertically-extendingfree edges 49.
At each end of the upper panel 43, there is integrally connected thereto an upwardly extending tab 5!) whose boundary in each case with the panel 43 is defined by an arcuate line of scoring 51. Each of the rear panels 48 is provided with a curvular slot 52 adjacent its upper edge to receive the tab 50.
In this form of the invention, it will be apparent that the device may be shipped in flat condition as a blank as shown in Fig. 9, for example, but that when it is ready to assemble the device into its final form, it is only necessary to fold the panel 46 rearwardly until they assume a right angular relation to the panel 40 after which the back panels 48 are likewise folded upon the score lines 47 so that they become substantially parallel to the front panel 40. The top panel 43 is then folded rearwardly upon the fold line 42 while at the same time bringing the ends of the device forwardly and toward each other to thus impart a concave condition to the front face of the panel 40. The tabs 50 may then be folded downwardlyupon the fold lines 51 and the tabs then inserted into the slots 52 to lock the device into its final form as shown, for example in Fig. 6 of the drawings. In this condition, it will be seen that the top panel 43 will assume an angular relation with the front panel 40 so that a cross-sectional area taken vertically through the device at any point of juncture therebetween will be V-shaped as indicated in Fig. 8. This will not only provide rigidity to the thus assembled device but will assist in maintaining the same in a vertical position when the same is placed upon a flat surface with the lower edges of the panels 40, 46 and 48 resting upon such surface. The curvular shape of the assembled wall 40 will, of course, provide a substantial means for supporting the device in an upright condition.
In Figs. 11 and 12, there is shown another form of the invention wherein there is provided a main panel which is provided with a horizontally-extending straight lower edge 61 and straight vertically-extending side edges 62. A scoring line generally indicated at 63 connects the upper end of the main panel 60 with a relatively smaller upper panel 64. The scoring line 63 in its central portion extends in a curvulardirection forming a convex downwardly extending central portion as indicated at 65 which is joined at each of its ends with a curvular portion 66 which is generally convex when considered as extending in an upward direction. The upper edge of the upper panel 64 is V-shaped in its central portion, as indicated at 67 and the outer ends of this V-shaped portion 67 terminate in outwardly and downwardly curved portions 68 and 68' which join respectively with the sides 62.
In assembling this form of the invention into useful condition, it is only necessary to fold the upper panel 64 rearwardly with respect to the main panel 60 upon the fold line 63 while at the same time forcing the central portion of the main panel 60 forwardly, as indicated at 68a in Fig. 11 and at the same time folding rearwardly those portions of the main panel 60 adjacent to the edges 62, as indicated at 69. Thus, it will be seen that the lower edge 61 will present a doublycurved contour which will, when placed upon a fiat surface, act to support the assembled device in a vertical condition. The angular relation between the panels ,60 and 64 will impart rigidity to the assembled device while at the same time imparting beauty thereto and acting to maintain the device in such assembled condition.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 13 and 14, there is provided a main panel 70 having a horizontally-extending straight lower edge 71 and verticallyextending straight sides 72. Connected. by a fold line which is generally indicated at 73 to the upper end of the main panel 70, is an upper panel 74 whose central portion is curved in an upward direction, as indicated at 75, and which central portion connects with downwardly extending curvular portions 76 at each end thereof. The panel 74 is provided with an upwardly extending curvular central portion 77 which joins with distorted circular end portions 78.
In assembling this form of the invention, .the panel 74 is bent or flexed rearwardly with respect to the panel 70 along the fold line 73 while at the same time bending the central portion of the panel inwardly, as indicated at 79. Thus, the lower edge 71 of the device will assume likewise a curvular condition and act as a stable base for the device when the same is placed in a vertically-extending position. Likewise, the angular relation between the panel 74 and the main panel 70 will act to impart rigidity to the assembled device while the panel 74 will in this form notonly maintain the device in its assembled condition but impart beauty to the same.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A self-supporting display device comprising a relatively large rearwardly concaved vertically-extending background panel having a straight lower supporting edge and downwardly curved upper and side edges formed by a score line extending from side to side and to the lower edge of the background panel and a flange rearwardly circumflexed from the score line and extending from one end of the score line to the other, said flange serving to hold the background panel in its rearwardly concaved shape.
2. A display device comprising a background body rearwardly concaved and extending vertically and having a downwardly curved score line defining the upper edge of said background, and a flange rearwardly circumflexed from the score line and extending from one end of the score line to the other, and an upwardly extending portion circumflexed from the flange and connected thereto by a scoring line.,
3. A display device comprising a rearwardly concaved vertically extending background portion having a downwardly curved score line defining the upper edge of said background, and a flange rearwardly circumflexed from the score line and extending from one end of the score line to the other, and an article support member disposed within the background portion and fastened between the sides thereof.
-4. A display device comprising a rearwardly curved vertically-extending background portion having downwardly curved upper and side edges formed by a score line extending from side to side and to the lower edge of the background and a narrow ribbon-like flange rearwardly circumfiexed from the score line and extending from one end of the score line to the other and having a rear edge conforming to the contour of the score line, said flange serving to hold the background in its rearwardly curved shape, and an upwardly extending portion circumflexed from the flange and having its lower edge connected thereto by a scoring line, and an article support mem er disposed ith n the backg Perfion and fastened between the sides thereof.
