' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMANUEL M. PROVONGHAR, OF VALLEJO, CALIFORNIA.
GAS-PURIFYING SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,582, dated February 20, 1883.
, Application filed September 12, 1882.
To altwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL M. PROVON: CHAR, of Vallejo, county of Solano, State of California, have invented an Improved Gas- Purifying Screen; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an improved construction of gas-purifying screens, all of which will hereinafter fully appear.
The object of my invention is to expose as much of; the body of lime to the gas as possi ble, to provide an easy means for forming the screen and removing old or inserting new slats, and to have a ready means either to support or raise it.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the screen Fig. 2, a transverse sectional view of the same.
The screen is made up of a number of slats,
-A. Each of these has double beveled edges on each side, which may be and preferably are rounded somewhat to present in cross-section a kind of oval or elliptical shape. These slats are set up on edge parallel to each other, and bolts B pass through them all. On the bolts areleather washers 0, between the slats, whereby these latter are held apart. The slats and bolts form the screen, which needs no outer frame, the ends of the slats projecting beyond (No model.)
By making the slats as I have shown-that must be had to the means by which they are put together, both as to durability and convenience in repairing.
In my device thetie-bolts' B, which if exposed to the gas would soon fail, are sufficiently covered both by the leather washers and by the wood to answer the purpose Very well; but their particular advantage is in the convenience they afi'ord for repairs. Suppose one of the middle slats of the screen should become damaged. I can easily split it and the washers off the bolts. Then I push up each slat to fill the space until the edge is reached, when by removing the nuts 21. new slat and washers may be put upon the bolts. Thus I am enabled to .substitute new slats with the least possible inconvenience.
The swinging handles D, as before explained, may serve either as handlesor standards, as most desired at the time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The gas-purifying screen consisting of the double -beveled slats A and tie-bolts B, having washers O, in combination with the swinging handles or standards D, hinged upon the end bolts, B, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand.
E. M. PROVONOHAR. Witnesses:
