8 Claims. (Cl. 211-181) This invention relates to a side foot base for display rack or stand.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a side foot base which can be attached to the sides of a display rack or stand, preferably made of wire and being fixed removably to form a base without the use of bolts, nuts or screws, and thereby to save on freight and facilitate assembly, yet provide as rigid a base and stand as any solidly welded construction.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the following specifi cation, and as defined in the following claims; hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of said device and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for the illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of wire display stand showing the side foot base in position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective fragmental view of the lower end of the side of the stand with the side foot in the first position of insertion.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the side foot in the second position of its insertion.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the final step of complete assembly of the side foot in position.
Fig. 5 is a somewhat diagrammatic detailed view of a side foot supporting the upright frame at an angle, and
Fig. 6 is a somewhat diagrammatic view of side foot supporting the wire frame at a different angle.
In carrying out my invention, 1 use such side foot base in connection with display racks or stands which have a suitable slot 1 formed at each side. Usually this can be formed at sides of wire display rack or stand 2 illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing. The shelves 3 of this wire display stand 2 are shown in broken lines merely to illustrate the general arrangement of such wire stand. At each side of the wire stand, the vertical slot 1 is formed by a pair of wires 4, preferably round wire, which are welded to suitable horizontal bars or wires of the frame such as the top wire frame 6 and the bottom wire frame 7 of the stand 2.
The pair of parallel side wires 4 extend below the bottom frame 7 and preferably are connected to form a rounded closed end 8 for the purpose of engagement with a part of the side foot hereinafter described.
Each side foot is also preferably made of round wire. Each side foot as herein illustrated has a lower cross wire 9 which has on it a fixed loop 11, preferably welded, extending horizontally so as to fit over the closed end 2,724,511 Patented Nov. 22, 1955 8 of the side wires 4 of the stand in the assembly. Each end of the lower cross wire 9 is bent downwardly and then turned upwardly so as to form a foot projection or extension 10 to rest upon the ground. The outer part of each loop 11 extends generally perpendicular to sides 12 which in the present illustration converge upwardly and are connected at the upper ends thereof by an upper cross bar 13. Thus in the form of this illustrative embodiment, the general outline of the side foot is that of a trapezoid.
On the upper cross bar 13, fixed preferably by welding, is a horizontal, generally U-shaped latch member 14. The open ends of the U-shaped latch member 14 have outwardly projecting fingers 16, generally parallel and spaced from the top cross wire 13 so as to form on each side of the latch 14 a pocket 17 for engagement with the respective vertical side wires 4. The space or slot 1 between the side wires 4 is slightly less than the distance between the horizontal legs 15 of the U-shaped latch 14 so that when the side foot is properly inserted, the U-shaped latch can be tightly sprung in place.
In operation the side foot is held generally at right angles to the vertical side wires 4 of the stand and the fingers 16 of the latch 14 are parallel with and between the wires 4 and are inserted into the slot as shown in Fig. 2. Then the side foot is turned so as to engage the opposite pockets 1'? with the opposite wires 4, and then the foot is turned to a vertical position as shown in Fig. 3. It is to be noted that this insertion is above the bottom frame 7 of the stand 2. Inasmuch as the bottom keeper loop 11 extends at right angles parallel with the U-shaped latch 14 and below the pockets 17, in said vertical position, the loop- 11 is in registry with the closed bottom 8 of the vertical wires 4. The side foot is pushed up from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4 longitudinally with respect to the side wires 4 so that the loop 11 is pressed over the projecting closed end 8 of the side wires 4. The engagement between the loop 11 and the projecting end 8 is also preferably a tight slide fit. The length of each foot projection 10 is greater than the projection of the closed end 8 of the side wires 4 below the bottom frame 7 of the stand 2. In this manner, the loop 11 can be abutted against the bottom frame 7 and the foot can be rendered even more solid.
This device is simple in construction, very easy to attach and it allows the shipping of stands of this type flat with detached base 1 which later on location can be quickly inserted, turned and pushed in place to form a solid base spot for the stand.
In Fig. 5 modified arrangement is shown wherein the side wires 4 are held upright at an incline as shown. The shelves in this instance still extend horizontally from the inclined frame or side wires 4. In order to provide a firm footing for such a frame also, the side foot is adapted to hold the frame at the required slant by offsetting the loop 11 on the bottom cross bar from the line of the latch 14 to the right viewing Fig. 5, so that the frame or side wires 4 when inserted therethrough are held in said inclined position. By ofisetting the loop 11 in the opposite direction as shown in Fig. 6, the frame is held inclined to the right viewing Fig. 6. In this latter form, the shelves are shown at right angles to the sides and thus also incline downwardly as shown.
I claim:
1. The combination with a display stand of the character described, having a generally vertical slot formed on each side thereof by a pair of spaced wires; of a removable foot base for each side comprising a lower cross member, an element on said lower cross member to support the bottom of said stand, an upper cross member connected to said lower cross member, a latch on the upper cross member extended generally at right angles of the plane of the foot base, and clamping fingers on said latch insertable through said slot when said foot base is held in position so that said upper cross member is parallel with said slot, said fingers being adapted to clamp over said pair of spaced wires when said foot base is turned so as to hold said upper cross member cross-wise with respect to said slot.
2. The combination with a display stand of the character described, having a generally vertical slot formed on each side thereof by a pair of spaced wires; of a removable foot base for each side comprising a lower cross member, an element on said lower cross member to support the bottom of said stand, an upper cross member connected to said lower cross member, and a latch on the upper cross member extended generally at right angles of the plane of the foot base, and clamping fingers on said latch insertable through said slot when said foot base is held in position so that said upper cross member is parallel with said slot, said fingers being adapted to clamp over said pair of spaced Wires when said foot base is turned so as to hold said upper cross member cross-wise with respect to said slot, and a closed end on the stand extended below the bottom thereof in alignment with said slot on each side, and said element comprising a loop spaced below said latch for receiving said closed end.
3. The combination with a display stand of the character described, having a generally vertical slot formed on each side thereof by a pair of spaced wires; of a removable foot base for each side comprising a lower cross member, an element on said lower cross member to support the bottom of said stand, an upper cross member connected to said lower cross member, a latch on the upper cross member extended generally at right angles of the plane of the foot base, and clamping fingers on said latch member insertable through said slot when said foot base is held in position so that said upper cross member is parallel with said slot, said fingers being adapted to clamp over said pair of spaced wires when said foot base is turned so as to hold said upper cross member cross-wise with respect to said slot, a closed end on the stand extended below the bottom of said stand in alignment with said slot on each side, said element comprising a loop on said foot base spaced from said latch for receiving said closed end, and supporting extensions on each foot base spaced below said loop and being longer than said closed end.
4. A detachable side foot base for a wire display stand having a pair of spaced side wires on each side forming a generally vertical slot, comprising a pair of spaced cross wires, generally perpendicular wires connecting said spaced cross wires, and a latch formed on the upper cross wire transversely to the plane included by said wires, said latch having engagement elements parallel to said upper cross wire for insertion into said slot in a vertical position and for clamping said pair of side wires when turned to a horizontal position.
5. A detachable side foot base for a wire display stand having a pair of spaced side wires on each side forming a generally vertical slot; comprising a pair of spaced cross wires, generally perpendicular wires connecting said spaced cross wires, and a latch formed on the upper cross wire transversely to the plane included by said wires, said latch having engagement elements parallel to said upper cross wire for insertion into said slot in a vertical position and for clamping said pair of side wires when turned to a horizontal position and a loop formed on the lower cross wire in registry with said engagement elements and adapted to receive the lower ends of said spaced side wires.
6. A detachable side foot base for a wire display stand having a pair of spaced side wires on each side forming a generally vertical slot comprising a pair of spaced cross wires, generally perpendicular wires connecting said spaced cross wires, and a latch formed on the upper cross wire transversely to the plane included by said upper cross wire for insertion into said slot in a vertical position and for clamping said pair of side wires when turned to a horizontal position, and a loop formed on the lower cross wire in registry with said latch and adapted to receive the lower ends of said spaced side wires, and supporting projcctions extended from said lower cross member and below said lower ends of said spaced side wires when assembled in said loop.
7. A detachable side foot base for a wire display stand having a pair of spaced side wires on each side forming a generally vertical slot, comprising a pair of vertically spaced cross wires, generally perpendicular wires connecting said spaced cross wires, and a latch formed on the upper cross wire transversely to the plane included by said upper cross wire for insertion into said slot in a vertical position and for clamping said pair of side wires when turned to a horizontal position, and a loop formed on the lower cross wire in registry with said latch and adapted to receive the lower ends of said spaced side wires, and supporting projections extended from said lower cross member and below said lower ends of said sides when assembled in said loop.
8. A detachable side foot base for a wire display stand having a pair of spaced side wires on each side forming a generally vertical slot comprising a pair of vertically spaced cross wires, generally perpendicular wires connecting said spaced cross wires, and a latch formed on the upper cross wire transversely to the plane included by said upper cross wire for insertion into said slot in a vertical position and for clamping said pair of side wires when turned to a horizontal position, and a loop formed on the lower cross wire in registry with said latch and adapted to receive the lower ends of said spaced side wires, and supporting projections extended from said lower cross member and below said lower ends of said sides when assembled in said loop, said loop being offset to one side with respect to the vertical alignment of said latch so as to hold said side wire at an angle with respect to the vertical.
