Description
Oct. 25, 1955 w. c. osBoRN ROLLING PIN Wal/er C. Osborn IN1/EN TOR.
Ir., JI la l United States Patent O ROLLING PIN Walter C. Osborn, Ansonia, Conn.
Application November 17, 1954, Serial No. 469,329
1 Claim. (Cl. 107-50) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in rolling pins and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character Which is adapted to be expeditiously lled with ice, water or both for cooling the working surface of the implement.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a rolling pinof the aforementioned character comprising novel means for removably mounting the handles on the body or cylinder of the pin in a manner to prevent leakage.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a rolling pin of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rolling pin constructed in accordance with the present invention; and,
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section through the device, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a cylinder 5 of aluminum or other suitable material. The cylinder 5, which may be of any desired length and diameter, terminates in internally threaded end portions 6. A pair of removable, externally threaded end closures or caps 7 are screwed into the end portions 6 of the cylinder 5. The end caps 7 have formed therein centrally located circular openings 8.
Handles designated generally by reference character 9 ice are mounted on the end caps 7. The handle assemblies 9 comprise metallic sleeves 10 aligned with the openings 8 and terminating at their inner ends in out-turned anges 11 which abut the caps 7. Grips 12 of wood or other suitable material are mounted on the sleeves 10. Extending through the sleeves 10 and the aligned openings 8 are headed bolts 13. The inner end portions of the bolts 13 are threaded into cap nuts 14 which abut the caps 7 in the end portions of the cylinder 5. The heads 15 on the outer ends of the bolts 13 are provided with kerfs 16 to receive a screwdriver.
It is thought that the manner in which the rolling pin is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Brieily, when a cool working surface is desired, either of the end caps 7, with the respective handle assembly 9 thereon, may be readily removed from the cylinder 5 to permit said cylinder to be lled with conventional ice, dry ice or water. The end cap 7 which has been removed is replaced. If water is used, the rolling pin may be placed in a refrigerator for cooling. When the bolts 13 are tightened, the flanges 11 and the nuts 14 are drawn together on the end caps 7 for positively preventing leakage through the openings 8.
It is believed that the many advantages of a rolling pin constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A rolling pin of the character described comprising: a hollow cylinder, end closures threadedly mounted on said cylinder, said closures having centrally located openings therein, sleeves mounted on the closures in longitudinal alignment with the openings, said sleeves including out-turned anges on one end abutting the closures, bolts extending through the sleeves and the openings, cap nuts threaded on the inner end portions of the bolts and engaged with the inner faces of the closures, said bolts including kerfed heads on their outer ends abutting the sleeves, and grips mounted on the sleeves and engaged with the iianges and the bolt heads.
