COMBINED. POST AND BASE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,149, dated February 13, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN NEWTON, of Clifford, Indiana, have made a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Post and Base, of which the followingis a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in the several figures of which like letters indicate like parts.

My invention consiflts, first, in a mortised base for posts, which may be either single or double, to receive one or more uprights; second, in my arrangement of chamfering the sides of thebase below the head or top to enable it to be driven readily and held firmly in the ground.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my device when used for suppolting a fence. A is an ordinary post let into the socket of the base B, the lower end of which is chamfered or channeled out, as shown. The lower rail of the fence, D, is also let into the base, below which is seen a driphole, 0, lor carrying off Water, preventing it from wettingitbelow the surface ot'the ground, and, if the base be made of wood, retarding decay. The rail D may be made tlush with the surface of the base or allowed to project beyond it, to prevent water from running down, if desired. a

Fig. 2 shows the double base when a double post is desired to be used. The boards of the fence, G G G maybe laid between the posts in any suitable manner, and rails may be used instead of boards by hewing ot't' the sides at each end. The posts may be drawn tightly to gether by a strap over their upper ends, or

I may be secured by bolts or pins, or both methods may be used, as shown.

Fig. 3 is a view of the lower end of a single base; Fig. 4, a view of the top end. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of such a base on the line as m; Fig. 6, a sideview.

Fig. 7 is a vert cal section of a double base, showing the posts in place and locked by the bar or key F, which passes through an opening in the base and fits into mortises in the sides of the posts E E. These bases may he made of any suitable material, and may be used for telephone or telegraph poles,flag-stafl's, fence-posts, and a variety of other purposes. Their construction and operation, I believe, will readily be understood from the drawings and explanations I have given.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i s-- 1. A base with one or more openings to reccive a post or stafi", the lower end channeled on two or more sides, having a horizontal recessfor admitting a lock-rail, and a. vertical drip-channel opening therefrom, both above the ground-level, substantially as described.

2. The base B, having the horizontal recess for admitting the lock-rail, and the drip-hole O, in combination with the post A and lockrail, substantially as described.
