(CL 16` s6) This invention relates to devices for checking the opening movement of a door to prevent the door knob striking the wall or other surface, and in particular an arm pivotally mounted in a recess in the lower end of a door and connected by a link to a bracket recessed in the door jamb whereby upon opening the door the arm moves outwardly to a position substantially at a right angle to the face of the door whereby a bumper on the end of the arm strikes the wall or other surface.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a door check or stop that is carried by a door and that extends outwardly only with the opening movement of the door.

Various attempts have been made to install door checks and stops on floors, dashboards and other parts of buildings, however, particularly with concrete, tile and other types of ooring it is diicult to install a stop or check and with devices of this type extending into a room or the like they, invariably, interfere with positioning furniture and other articles in the room. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a door check carried by a door and which extends only from the door when use thereof is desired.

The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for incorporating a door stop in a door whereby the stop extends outwardly with the opening movement of the door.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved door stop of the type carried by a door in which the stop is adapted to be installed in doors now in use.

A further object of the invention is to provide an iinproved door stop or check of the type carried by a door in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies an L-shaped bracket recessed in a door jamb and extended into a slot in the lower portion of a door, a link slidably mounted in the slot of the door or on the lower end of the door and pivotally connected to the bracket and an arm also pivotally connected to the bracket and mounted to extend from the door as the door is opened.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the lower portion of a door with the door mounted in a frame and illustrating the position of the improved door stop on the door, parts of the door being broken away and shown in section, to show the connection of the device to the door jamb.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking upwardly and showing the method of mounting the improved door stop on the lower end of a door.

Figure 3 is a sectional plan taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l also showing the relative positions of the parts of the improved door stop on the lower end of the door.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved door stop or check of this invention includes an elongated link 10 adapted to be positioned on the lower end of a door or in a slot in the lower part of the door, a mounting bracket 11 having a ange 12 at one end, an arm 13 pivotally mounted on a block 14 with a pin 15 and having a bar 16 extended from the end through which the rivet extends and a bumper 17, of resilient material positioned on the extended end of the arm.

One end of the link 1t) is provided with an opening 18 through which a rivet or pin 19 extends and, as shown in Fig. 5, the pin also extends through an opening 20 in the extended end of the bracket 11 whereby the lever is pivotally mounted on the bracket.

The bracket is mounted in a recess 21 in a door jamb, as indicated by the numeral 22 with the flange 12, that is positioned in the recess, secured in position by screws 23 which extend through openings 24 in the flange. The bracket is positioned on the door jamb so that the link 10 may be positioned againstthe lower end of a door, as indicated by the numeral 25 or in a groove 26 in the lower end of the door, as shown in Fig. 8.

The extended end of the link 10 is provided with an elongated slot 27 through which a pin 28, which connects the lever to the bar 16 of the arm 13, extends. The pin 28 is mounted in an opening 29 in the extended end of the bar 16 and is slidably mounted in the elongated slot 27 whereby the pin is free to move from one side of the slot 27 to the other. The arm 13 is pivotally mounted by the pin 15 in the upper section of the block 14 and, as illustrated in Fig. 9 the block is provided with extensions 30 and 31 at the ends through which openings 32 and 33 extend, respectively, and the block is secured on the face of a door with screws 34 that extend through the openings and that are threaded into the door.

With the parts mounted on the door in this manner the pivotal connection between the link 10 and bracket 11 is offset in relation to the pivotal connection of the hinges 35 of the door as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 whereby, as the door swings outwardly the lever 10 draws the bar 16 of the arm 13 toward the hinged end of the door whereby the extended end of the arm 13 swings outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4 so that it engages the face 36 of a Wall or the like, as indicated by the numeral 37. A bumper plate 38 may be inserted in or mounted on the face of the wall if deseired.

The door frame may also be provided with a sill 39 as shown in Fig. 5, if desired.

In the closing movement of the door the link 10 moves outwardly whereby the arm 13 swings to the folded or nested position in the block 14.

It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
