Description
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER F. BUCHANAN, OF MONTROSE, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FORDRNAMENTING AND CUTTING OIL-CLOTH, 84.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,782, dated February 6, 1883. Application filed October 24, 1882. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER FORDYOE BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Montrose, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Urnamenting and Cutting Oil-Cloth, &c., of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention consists in a machinein which a Web of oil-cloth, paper, or other like material is cut in a zigzag, undulating, or other analogous plane, and ornamented or decorated on opposite sides of the out in a plane parallel therewith, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical cross-section. Fig. 2 is aside view of the cutting-roller. Fig. 3 shows a portion of the cut and ornamented web.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. The letter A designates the machine-frame, forming the bearings for a cutting-roller, B, and decorating-roller 0, oneprovided with a circumferential knife, E, extending in a zigzag, undulating, or other similar plane, and the other provided with circumferential printing or embossing devices in two sets, which extend in a plane parallel to each other and to said knife, on opposite sides of the knife. The rollers B U are geared, as by means of cogwheels F, in such a manner that the printing or embossing devices (iolllpllslllg the acting surdrying-roller, K. By the action of the rollerknife E the web is out or severed in a plane corresponding to that of the knife, while by the action of the decorating-roller U it is printed or embossed on opposite sides of and parallel with the cut, as indicated in Fig. 3, and hence the web is divided into two parts or lengths, each of which has a scalloped edge, in
addition toa lineof ornamentation corresponding to such edge, without waste of material. For the purpose of imparting to said divided lengths of the web a good finish the cuttingroller is provided with trimming-knives E, which act on the Web at or near its opposite longitudinal edges in its passage over'the cutting-roller.
If desired, the roller-knife E may be arranged to score the web, without cnttinglit, a sufficient distance in each revolution oftthe roller to leave the parts of the web united to each other, while the cutting-roller and decorating-roller, moreover, may be transposed, so
that the web is first printed or embossed and p then cut.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, substantially as hereinbe-
