COLLAPSIBLE PAPER SUPPORT FOR TYPEWRITER CARRIAGES Filed Jan. 22, 1953 INVENTUR.
Giovanni Ceregilzei'ki ATTORNE Y United States Patent U1 ice 1 2,717,687 COLLAPSIBLE PAPER SUPPORT FGR TYPEWRITER CARRIAGES Giovanni Cereghetti, Yverdon, Switzerland, assignor to Paillard S. A., Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, a company of Switzerland Application January 22, 1953, Serial No. 332,689 Claims priority, application Switzerland February 7, 1952 6 Claims. (Cl. 197-143) In most typewriters, the part of the sheet of paper that has passed round the cylinder and projects beyor'l the back of the latter falls behind said back, so that it is impossible to read most of the typewritten text unless the upper part of the sheet is held in upright position by suitable means. To avoid this drawback, most typewriters are provided with a support for the paper, which suppo". is almost always collapsible and holds the sheet in a position such that the typist may read the entire typewritten text without having to hold the sheet by hand.
My invention has for its object a typewriter, the carriage of which is provided with a collapsible support f r the paper, said support including at least one arm; said machine being distinguished from the prior art by reason of said arm or arms being pivotally mounted so as to rock about an axis parallel with that of the carriage cylinder. I have illustrated by way of example in the an companying drawings a preferred embodiment of the invention. In said drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carrier provided with two arms.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section through a part of a typewriter incorporating such a two-arm carrier.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the collapsible paper carrier includes two arms 1 which are interconnected at their lower ends by a horizontal bar 2. Each of said arms is provided with a lug 3 bored at 4 so as to allow the syw tern to be secured to the carriage of the typewriter in a manner such that said system may rock about an axis 5 parallel with that of the typewriter cylinder.
The typewriter of which a part is illustrated in Fig. 2 includes a protecting cover 6 located on the rear side m the carriage carrying the cylinder 9. Said cover is provided with two openings 7 of which only one is shown in Fig. 2 and through which the corresponding arms 1 are adapted to project. Said arms assume a shape such that when they are in their lower inoperative position shovn in solid lines, they mate with the shape of said protecting cover 6 on the outside thereof. Springs 8 are provided for holding the support constituted by the arms 1 selectively either in their raised position shown in interrupted lines in Fig. 2 or in their above-mentioned lower inoperative position.
In the embodiment described, the carrier includes two arms but obviously, it is possible to provide only one arm or again more than two arms.
The arms 1 are rigid with each other by reason of tl interconnection provided by the horizontal bar 2 and consequently they may be angularly shifted in unison. In order to allow an easier control of the paper carrier, it is possible to secure a control lever to one of the lugs 3, which lever projects permanently outside the protecting cover 6.
What I claim is:
1. In a typewriter including a carriage and a cylinder revolubly carried thereon, a protecting cover on the rear surface of the carriage, a bar extending in parallelis v with the axis of the cylinder and at least one arm rigid with said bar and extending transversely thereof to rock with said bar round an axis parallel with the axis of the cylinder between an inoperative position in which the arm mates with the outer shape of the cover and a raised 2,717,687 iiatented Sept. 13, 1955 operative position in which it serves as a support for the the paper winding off the cylinder.
2. In a typewriter including a carriage and a cylinder revolubly carried thereon, a protecting cover on the rear surface of the carriage, a bar extending in parallelism with the axis of the cylinder, at least one arm rigid with said bar and extending transversely thereof to rock with said bar round an axis parallel with the axis of the cylinder between an inoperative position in which the arm mates with the outer shape of the cover and a raised operative position in which it serves as a support for the paper winding off the cylinder, and at least one spring urging the system constituted by the arm and bar selectively into either of its above defined positions.
3. In a typewriter including a carriage and a cylinder revolubly carried thereon, a protecting cover on the rear surface of the carriage, provided with slots, a bar extending in parallelism with the axis of the cylinder and arms rigid with said bar and extending transversely thereof, said arms extending through said slots in the cover and being adapted to rock with said bar round an axis parallel with the axis of said cylinder between an inoperative position in which the arms mate with the outer shape of the cover and a raised operative position in which they serve as a support for the paper Winding off the cylinder.
4. In a typewriter comprising a carriage and a cylinder rotatably mounted thereupon, a protecting cover positioned on said carriage to the rear of said cylinder, a bar secured to said carriage and positioned thereon to the rear of and parallel to said cylinder, and at least one rockable paper-support arm having the configuration of said protecting cover, said arm being rigidly joined to said bar, said bar and arm being mounted to pivot simultaneously about an axis parallel to the axis of said cylinder, whereby the said support arm can be pulled downwardly toward the rear of the typewriter to conform with the shape of the protecting cover in the position of nonuse.
5. In a typewriter comprising a carriage and a cylinder rotatably mounted thereupon, a protecting cover positioned on said carriage to the rear of said cylinder, a bar secured to said carriage and positioned thereon tothe rear of and parallel to said cylinder, and a plurality of rockable paper-support arms, each having the configuration of the protecting cover and each being parallel to the other, each of said arms being rigidly joined to said bar, said bar and said arms being pivotally mounted about an axis parallel to the axis of said cylinder, whereby the said arms can be pulled downwardly toward the rear of the typewriter to conformwith the shape of the protecting cover in the position of non-use.
6. In a typewriter comprising a carriage and a cylinder rotatably mounted thereupon, a protecting cover positioned on said carriage to the rear of said cylinder, a bar secured to said carriage and positioned thereon to the rear of and parallel to said cylinder, and at least one rockable paper-support arm having the configuration of said protecting cover, said arm being rigidly joined to said bar, said bar and said arm being mounted to pivot simultaneously about an axis parallel to the axis of said cylinder to a raised or lowered position, and spring means for holding the support arm in a raised or lowered position, said means being positioned between and connected to the protecting cover and the bar, whereby the said support arm can be pulled downwardly toward the rear of the typewriter to conform with the shape of the protecting cover in the position of non-use.
