Description
p 6 1955 J.- R. TERRILL PORTABLE LOCK FOR SLIDING PANELS Filed July 5, 1953 INVENTOR. Jo/znflflerrill,
ATTORNEYS United States Patent Ofiice Patented Sept. 6, 1955 PORTABLE LOCK FOR SLIDING PANELS John R. Terrill, Collingswood, N. J. Application July 3, 1953, Serial N 0. 365,903 1 Claim. (Cl. 70-14) This invention relates to portable locks of the temporary type wherein a lock is inserted between overlapping edges of panes of glass or the like, such as glass doors of a showcase or the sliding doors of a food containing cabinet or the like, and in particular a lock body having a lock bolt in the form of a U-shaped arm slidably mounted on the lock and in which the lock body is provided with a plate, spaced from the U-shaped section of the arm and positioned to engage the opposite surface of a sliding glass panel or the like whereby the lock is positively retained in position until released by a key.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a safety arm or bar on the side of a temporary lock for holding sliding panels, such as glass plates to prevent springing the glass to remove locks without a key.
Various types of products are retained, particularly in grocery stores and the like in cabinets closed with sliding glass panels, sash, doors, and the like and where glass panels are used the panels are formed of laminated or Plexiglas which is susceptible to bending and by spring ing the panels it is possible to remove the lock so that such cabinets are readily opened. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates an extra or auxiliary arm integrally secured to the lock body and positioned to extend over the outer surface of a glass panel whereby with the lock bolt extended over one panel the arm locks the two panels together preventing separation thereof until the lock is released with a key, or the like.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a temporary lock of the portable type that is adapted to be inserted between overlapping edges of glass panels for positively locking the panels in closed positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a safety locking plate or arm for preventing opening of glass doors of panels by unauthorized persons in which the arm is adapted to to be mounted on conventional locks used for this purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide a portable lock for use on overlapping edges of glass panel doors and the like in which means is provided for preventing springing of the panels of the doors and in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a lock body having an arm with a U-shaped section providing a lock bolt adjustably mounted on one end of the body and a plate permanently secured to the body and spaced from the U-shaped section of the lock bolt or arm.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the improved temporary lock and showing the lock positioned on overlapping edges of glass panels, portions of the glass panels being broken away.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the lock taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l, the portions of the glass panels shown associated with the lock being shown in section.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the improved portable lock looking toward the end on which the U- shaped section of the lock bolt is positioned and also from which the plate of this invention extends.
Figure 4 is a perspective view also showing the improved lock, the U-shaped lock bolt being omitted.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved lock of this invention includes a lock body 10 which, although being illustrated as being cylindrical, may be made of any suitable shape or design, a lock bolt 11 having a U- shaped end with a tongue 12 connected to a section 13 of the lock bolt with an end section 14, and a plate 15, which is secured, preferably by soldering or welding to the lock body 10 and which is positioned in spaced relation to the section 13 of the lock bolt 11 whereby a panel of glass, as indicated by the numeral 16 may be positioned between the plate 15 and section 13, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The plate 15 may be of any suitable size, shape, or design and, as illustrated in Fig. 2 the U-shaped section of the lock bolt is placed over the edge of one panel, such as indicated by the numeral 17 and with the plate 15 positioned against the outer surface of the panel 16 an S-shaped section is provided with the edge of the panel 17 extended into one section or loop thereof and the edge of the panel 16 extended into another section or loop thereof.
With the parts arranged in this manner the plate 15 prevents the transparent panels being sprung apart or separated sufficiently to permit the comparatively small lock being displaced or removed.
The lock may be of the key actuated type, as shown in the drawing or a combination lock may also be used.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A portable lock for sliding panels comprising a cylindrical body having a transversely disposed bar providing a lock bolt extended through one end, said bar having a U-shaped section on an end extended from the body of the lock, said U-shaped section having a tongue extended from a cross section at one end of the bar, and a plate having an opening therein through which said cylindrical body extends and to which cylindrical body the plate is rigidly secured, said plate being parallel to said bar and laterally spaced from said U-shaped section, said U-shaped section of the bar forming the lock bolt being positioned to receive an edge portion of a panel adapted to extend across the back of the cylindrical body and said plate spaced from the U-shaped section of the bar being positioned to overlie an edge portion of a second panel overlapping the first mentioned panel.
