To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. PIKE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and 5 State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVater-Olosets, of which the following is a specification,

reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention has relation to that class of water'closets wherein a disinfecting-liquid is introduced into the bowl or retainer while the latteris being flushed. Such closets have heretofore been so constructed that when operated 1 the disinfectantpasses into the bowl orretainer simultaneously with the flushing-water, the.

g3 novel'combination, construction, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents a water-closet bowl; B, the retainer, 5 and C the lever for operating the pan, clapper or valve, and the water-cock in the customary .way, and to which is attached a push-rod, D. Said parts may be constructed and arranged in the usual or any other desired and suitable manner, and need not therefore be more particularly described.

D represents a tank or reservoir designed and adapted to receive a disinfectant of any suitable character, and which may be located in any desirable place in the buildingor apartment furnished with the closet. l rom said reservoir leads a pipe, E, having a valve, 0, and connects with another reservoir, D, which is made of a size about large enough to hold the 50 desired charge of disinfectant designed to be passed into the bowl or its container. The latter is connected-to reservoir D by a pipe, E, the bore of which ismuch smaller than the passage-way through cock 0, so that a charge of disinfectant passing into reservoir D cannot flow out of the same as fast as it enters, but will be held therein for an interval of greater or less duration, depending upon the difference between the bore of pipe E and the opening in the cock 0. The latter is provided with a crank or handle, 6, which is operated to open and close said valve by means of collars ffon rod F, secured to lever C.

cl represents an air pipe or vent for reservoir D, and the bowl A is designed to be provided with the usual or other seal, as indicated at 00.

The operation is as follows: When rod D is raised to effect the flushing of the bowl the valve 6 is opened, the disinfectant from reservoir D flows through pipe E into tank D, and

thence by way of pipe E to container B; but

as the bore of pipe E is less than thatof valve 6, it follows that the disinfectant cannot flow out of tank D fast as it enters the same. Hence but a small portion of the disinfectant enters the container when the flushing-water from the bowl is passing therethrough. The greater portion of the charge of disinfectant is therefore held in tank D until after the flushing operation is completed, when it gradually 8o flows into the container, and from thence to the trap of the closet, (shown by dotted lines yy.) Thedisinfectantflowinginagentlestream into the trap, thelatter is not siphoned, and the advantages designed to be derived from the 8 5 use of the disinfectant are therefore obtained in the fullest degree.

I have shown and described my invention as applied to water-closets having a container; but it is obvious that it is equally applicable to 0 closets wherein the containeris dispensed with, in which case the pipe E will connect with the bottom of the bowl,orjust below the sealing-valvetheretor, ifsuch valve is used; orsaid pipe may connect with the trap of the closet 5 or to other fixtures. So, too, I have shown the reservoirs D D separate from each other; but it is obvious that they maybe combined to form one reservoir having two compartments, with the cock e intervening.

That I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination with a water-closet, the
