UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH v. GRAY, oF RUsHvILLE, INDIANA.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 270,949, dated Ianuary 23, 1883.
Application led November 27, 1882. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH V. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rushville, `in the county of Rush and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Spring Bed-Bottom, of 'which the following is a specication, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to spring bed-bottoms, and has for its object to provide a simple', inexpensive, and eicient arrangement and construction of springs that will possess superior elasticity, strength, and durability.
In the drawings, Figure l is a top View ot' a spring bed-bottom ot my improved construction, only a section of the bottom being shown. Fig. 2 is a side view of the section represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line x x, Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, A designates four springs, which constitute a section of my improved bed-bottoni, each of these springs being coiled conicallyat its upper portion, but having its lower portion or half formed of coils ot' uniform diameter, as shown at U, by which construction the durability and strength of the springs are enhanced., and they are enabled to better accommodate and adapt themselves to varying pressure. Each spring has also an enlarged coil, D, at its bottom, that forms a base by which the springis secured to the slat E. The springs of the quadruple section herein shown are secured to the slats E in pairs, and each spring is braced and re-encured to the slat at its edge., and extend up and are secured to the main spring A,just
above its lower portion, of uniform coils C.
y These reent'orcin g and bracing springs FF are arranged in relation to their respective main springs A-one inaJ line longitudinal to the pair of springs A A on the slat and the other in a line transverse thereto, as shown. The four springs A are united at their tops. by two centrally-disposed coiled springs, G G, that extend diagonally from one spring of a pair to a spring of the other pair, and are intercoiled at their centers H in such a manner as to cause the springs G G to have' an elongated-S contour, which increases their sup porting-surface and admits of greater play.
B designates four small coiled springsthat are used to unite the springs A near the outer edge of the hereinshown rectangular section formed by the'quadruple springs A.
The operation and advantages of my invention are obvious. y
The springs comprising this improved bedbottom are all completely interbraced, sothat they all assist in returningacompressed spring to its normal position; and this arrangement of springs provides a large bearing-surface for the mattress, while no ends of springs are exposed that might tear or otherwise damage the bedding. To further obviatc any damage to the bedding, the ends oi' the coiled springs F, G, and H', are turned inside their coil, as shown at I, after being bent round the springs to which they are secured. The -ends I are thus inclosed by their own coils and cannot engage the bedding.
l claim as my invention- 1. In a spring bedbottom, the combination, with four main springs arranged to form a rectangular section, of the central diagonallydisposed connecting coiled springs intercoiled at their center, so that each of the connectingsprings has an elongated-S contour, which iucreases the supporting-surface and admits of greater play, as set forth.
2. In a spring bed-bottom, the combination, with the main springs, of connecting and bracing coiled springs, having their ends bent round the main springs and turned inside their own coils to prevent thetn from engaging the bedding, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH VINCENT GRAY.
