1 Claim. (Cl. 240-54) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in portable light guards, and has for its primary object to provide, in a device of this character, comprising a rotatably adjustable suspension hook, novel means for rmly but releasably securing said hook in adjusted position.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a guard of the aforementioned character which may be expeditiously opened when access to the interior is desired.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a portable light guard of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eilicient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a guard constructed in accordance with the present invention mounted on a portable light;
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section through the invention;
Figure 3 is a detail View in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a detail view in perspective of the hook locking disc.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 5 designates generally a con ventional portable light. The light 5 includes the usual handle 6 having mounted in its upper end portion a suitable socket 7 for the reception of an electric lamp 8. A conductor cord 9 passes through the handle 6 to the socket 7.
The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a shade or reflector 10 of suitable material and a complemental wire cage 11. The reflector 10 is of a depth to enclose the major portion of the lamp 8 and said reflector comprises, on its lower end, a neck 12 which is mounted on the lower portion of the socket 7.
As shown to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawing, the upper end or top 13 of the reilector 10 has formed there- 2,707,229 Patented Apr. 26, 1955 rice in an opening 14 for the reception of a hook 15 on the upper end of the wire guard or cage 11. The lower end ot' the cage 11 is detachably secured to 'the neck 12 of the reflector 10 by means comprising screws 16.
The top 13 of the reflector 10 has struck or pressed thereinto an internal rib 17. Rising from the top 13 of the reflector 10 is a suspension hook 18 which passes slidably through the rib 17. A metallic disc 19 is lixed on the lower end portion of the hook 18 As shown to advantage in Figure 4 of the drawing, the disc 19 has formed therein radial corrugations or grooves 20 for the reception of the rib 17.
The shank of the hook 18 passes slidably through a washer 21 which rests on the top 13 of the reflector 10. Fixed on the shank of the hook 18 is ring or collar 22. A coil spring 23 encircles the shank of the hook 18 between the elements 21 and 22 for yieldirigly urging said hook upwardly for engaging the disc 19 with the rib 17 of the reector top 13.
It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, to rotatably adjust the hook 18, said hook is depressed against the tension of the coil spring 23 for disengaging the disc 19 from the rib 17. The hook 18 is then turned to the desired position and released. When the hook 18 is released, said hook is elevated by the spring 23 for engaging the disc 19 with the rib 17, said rib entering one of the corrugations or grooves 20 in said disc. To detach the cage 11, the screws 16 are removed, thus freeing the lower end of said cage. The cage is then swung outwardly and upwardly in a manner to permit the hook 15 to be disengaged from the opening 14.
It is believed that the many advantages of a portable light guard constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A portable light guard comprising; a reflector including a top having a rib therein, a rotatably adjustable suspension hook extending slidably through the rib, a disc fixed on the hook in the reflector and having a plurality of radial grooves therein for selectively receiving the rib, a washer slidable on the hook and resting on the top, a collar fixed on the hook above the top, and a coil spring resting on the washer and engaged with the collar for yieldingly urging the hook upwardly for engaging the dise with the rib for securing said hook in rotatably adjusted position.
