I UNITED Y STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
GEORGE CHAPMAN, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO F. F. ADAMS & 00., (LIMITED,) OF SAME PLACE.
TOBACCO-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,178, dated January 2, 1883.
7 Application filed August 21, 1862. (No model.) i
" To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, GEORGE CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ede, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Gutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be at'ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such I as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for cutting plug-tobacco; and it consists in providing certain improvements which are hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
, The device is illustrated in the accompany ing drawings as follows: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the "device. Fig. 2 is a top view of the base. Fig. 3 is atransverse vertical section on the line a: w in Fig. 1. Fig. 4is
a vertical longitudinal section of a portion of the base, the standard against which the knife acts, and the knife.
The parts are designated by letters asfollows: A is thebase;'B, the standard or cutting-block; U, the knife-guide and lower fulcrum block or standard D, the lever by which the knife is moved; E, the knite-sbank; E, the knife-head F, the knife blade. b is aso't'tmetal cutting-surface in the cutting-post B. c is adovetail or key lug on the standard 0, by which it is held upon the base. S isa slot,
and S-ihe key-lug openings in the base A.
The construction is as follows: The base A and post B are one pieceof metal. The block or standard 0, the knife head and shank E E," and the lever l) are each separate pieces of cast metal. The knife-blade is attached to the head in any way desirable. In the face of the post B is agroove, into which lead or other solt metal canbe run, which forms a sott cutting-surface for the knife to out upon.
.In the top of the base is a slot, S, which exserving as a. guitleblock for the knife.
standard C; but as the strain of cuttingis, exerted in such a direction as to keepthe standard G back in place, there is little necessity of securing it in the slot further than is 5 done by the key-lugs. The standard 0 has an opening through it for the knife-shank, thus In the extreme end of the shank F there is a slot or eye, 0. The lever D is hung on the standard 6: G, and its short end 01 tits in the eye e in the shank, so that a downward movement of the lever will drive the knife toward the post B, and an upward movement will draw the knife back away from the post. The cutting-face of th post B and the knife both extend below the top of the base in theslot S. The ob- I ject of this is to secure a clean cut on the lower side or edge of the tobacco-plug.
It will be observed that by the oonstruction I shown a very cheap tobacco'cntter can be had. Each part is ready for use WlililOllhfllP- ther work upon it, as it comes from the foundry, except the fulcrum-hole in the lever, which will have to be drilled, (but the holein the block 0, in which the fulcrum-pin passes, can be cast'in it,) and the work of attaching the kniteblade to the head will have to be done, but if the blade should be laid in the sand the head could be cast upon it. The work of putting the parts together is triflling, and the cost of the whole device will be very little over the cost of the materials.
What 1 claim as new is-- 1. In a tobacco-cutter, the base A, with post B, and slot S, with key-lug openings S, in combination with the standard 0, lever D, and knife 1 E E, substantially as shown.
. 2. In a tobacco-cutter wherein the knife moves laterally against an upright poster block, abuse, A, having a slot, S,and the knife blade and cutting-block extended below the top of said base, and means, substantially as described, for forcing the knife against the block.
in testimony whereof I aflix my signaturein presence of two witnesses. I
GEORGE CHAPMAN.
