Description
Dec. 28, 1954 H. S. MANGUS DOOR FASTENER Filed Jan. 6, 1953 ATTORNEYQ United Sttes Patent DUOR FASTENER Harold S. Mangus, Norton, Karts, assignor of one-half to Foster Lumber Company, Kansas City, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Application January 6, 1953, Serial No. 329,765
1 Ciairn. (Cl. 292-300) This invention relates to door fasteners and has special reference to a door fastener for sliding doors of the type used on structures wherein the door has a horizontal sliding movement.
One important object of the invention is to provide a novel fastener adapted to be secured to the stile of a door opening and the edge of a door in such manner that it cannot be removed when the door is closed.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be made by simple operations from strip steel.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby the use of the device will hold the edge of the door to which the device in part is applied beyond the door opening.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be used in connection with an ordinary padlock and with the usual sealing Wire and seal.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts, and:
Fig. 1 is a horizontal section through a portion of a structure wall showing the door opening and showing the door and the device of the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one element of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the co-acting element of the invention.
In the embodiment of the invention as herein shown there is illustrated the portion of the wall of a structure having a door opening 11 therein, this opening being provided with stiles 12. Mounted for sliding movement horizontal across the door opening is a door 13 supported in any of the usual manners and at one side of the door opening there is provided a guide 14 through which the door slides. Attached to the other side of the door opening is one element of the invention. This element Patented Dec. 28, 1954 consists of a steel strip having an imperforate portion 14a from one edge of which extends a long plate 15 provided with screw holes 16. From the opposite edge of the portion 14a extends a plate 17 having a horizontal disposed slot 18 between its upper and lower edges. In the application of this part of the invention, the plate 15 is placed against the stile on the face confronting the door opening and is there held by screws 19. The application of the plate is so arranged that the imperforate part 14a extends along the outside of the wall 10 away from the door opening and the portion 17 extends outwardly from the wall.
The remaining portion of the invention consists of a steel strip bent to provide a long arm 20 having screw receiving openings 21 therein. Extending from the long arm 20 is a short arm 22, which lies at right angles to the arm 21 and projecting from the arm 22 is a U-shaped staple 23, the legs of which are fixed firmly in the arm 22. This member of the invention is applied to the edge of the door so that the arm 22 lies against the edge and the arm 20 lies against the inner face of the door at the edge and is there held by screws 24. The staple 23 is in such position that upon the door being closed, the staple 2.3 will project through the slot 18 and in this position a padlock 25 or other securing device may be applied to the staple. The screws 19 and 24, being on the inner side of the door and the opening confronting face of the stile, cannot be removed when the door is closed and thus the device is made secure.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is Wished to include all such as properly come Within the scope claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
A door fastener comprising a steel strip consisting of a short arm and a long arm, said short arm provided with a horizontal outwardly extending staple, a second steel strip provided with an imperforate portion, said imperforate portion provided at one end with an integral long plate at right angles thereto, said imperforate portion having at the other end an integral right-angled plate extending in an opposite direction to said long plate, and said right-angled plate provided with a horizontal slot for receiving said staple.
