Description

G. DOMON KOS Dec. 7, 1954 TOOL HANDLE Filed June 6, 1952 Arrow/5y United States Patent TOOL HANDLE Gabriel Domonkos, Detroit, Mich.
Application June 6, 1952, Serial No. 292,181
4 Claims. (Cl. 29-80) This invention relates to tool handles and more particularly to file handles.
Broadly, the invention comprehends a handle for a file so constructed that the working or cutting face of the file may be completely employed during a filing operation.
The invention further comprehends a handle for a file of simple and durable structure which may be manufactured at small cost and which may be easily and quickly applied or removed.
The invention also comprehends a handle for a file comprising a simple stamping bent upon itself with the registering parts suitably secured together.
An object of the invention is to provide a handle for a file which may be produced at low cost and which may be easily and quickly applied and/or removed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a handle for a file characterized in that the entire cutting face of the file may be employed without danger of marring the work by the handle.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description when taken in connection with the drawings forming a part of this specification and in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a stamping which may be deformed to provide the handle;
Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating the handle as applied;
Figure 3 is a side elevation partly in section; and
Figure 4 is an end view.
Referring to the drawings for more specific details of the invention, represents a flat file having a conventional shank 12 provided with oppositely arranged grooves or slots 14.
A strip of sheet metal stock is stamped to provide a rectangular central portion 16 with diagonal beads 18 and corresponding longitudinal sections 20 and 22 pressed to provide elongated concavities 24 and 26 and corresponding end sections 28 and 30 substantially normal to the sections 20 and 22 slightly flared as indicated at 32 and 34 and terminating in grips 36 and 38.
The stamping is deformed by bending the central section 16 on a suitable mandrel, not shown, to form a sleeve 40 having internal threads formed by the inclined beads 18. This deformation of the section 18 results in bringing the sections 20 and 22, the shanks 28 and 30 anld also the clips 32 and 34 in registration with one anot er.
The sections 20 and 22 may be secured together in any "Ice the grips 36 and 38 in the grooves 14 in the shank of the file and setting the screw 44 so as to firmly grasp the file and then setting the screw 46 so as to lend rigidity to the attachment of the handle.
The handle 42 is so contoured as to fit the average hand of a user with the maximum comfort and the sleeve 40 provides a thumb rest so that the file may be held at the proper angle for filing without tiring the hand of the user.
In Figures 3 and 4 a slightly modified form is shown. In this embodiment the sections 26 and 28 are not deformed to provide a contoured handle such as is shown in Fig. 2 but are flat and to lend added comfort to the hand of the user, wooden hand grips 48 may be attached.
While this invention has been described in connection with certain specific embodiments, the principles involved are susceptible of numerous other applications that will readily occur to persons skilled in the art. The invention is, therefore, to be limited only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a file handle, a hand grip, a bifurcated shank on one end of the hand grip, oppositely disposed adjustable grips on the free ends of the bifurcated shank, a head on the other end of the hand grip, and a screw mounted for travel in the head.
2. In combination with a file having a shank provided with oppositely arranged grooves, a handle for the file comprising a hand grip, a bifurcated shank on the hand grip, oppositely disposed adjustable grips on the free ends of the shank received by the slots, a head on the hand grip, and a screw mounted for travel in the head and adapted to bear against the file.
3. A file handle comprising a stamping including a central portion, diagonal ribs on the central portion, corresponding elongated sections having concaved surfaces adjoining the central portion, corresponding shanks adjoining the elongated sections and grips on the free ends of the shanks, the central portion being deformed to provide a sleeve having interior threads, means for clamping the shanks together, and a screw mounted for travel in the sleeve.
4. A tool holder, comprising, a handle, a bifurcated shank on one end of the handle in normal relation thereto, cooperative grips on the free ends of the shank for supporting a tool beneath the handle, a head on the other end of the handle, and a screw mounted for travel in the head in a path parallel to the shank for creating pressure between the handle and the tool.
