(Cl. 101--67) This invention relates to accounting machines and particularly to printing means to record duplicate data on a web of record material issued by such machines, and to means for severing a receipt and a stub from said web in a single cutting operation, and for storing the stub.
An object of the invention is to feed a web of paper forming a receipt into position adjacent a pair of knives, and thereafter to sever a section therefrom to form a receipt, and simultaneously to cut a stub off of the section.
Another object of the invention is to provide a doubleedged knife coacting with two stationary knives, so that a receipt and a stub can be cut from a web of record material by one stroke of the double-edged knife.
A specific object of the invention is to cut a stub from a web of record material and to thereafter feed the stub into a locked receptacle.
Another specific object of the invention is to provide a vibrating device adjacent a cutting knife for forcing a stub of record material into a chute immediately the knife has severed the stub from a web of record material.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for vibrating the paper chute to facilitate dropping the stub therein into a receptacle provided therefor.
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention includes certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, a preferred form or embodiment of which is hereinafter described with reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The machine to which the present invention is shown applied is fully illustrated and described in the United States patent to Ernst Breitling, No. 2,209,763, issued July 30, 1940.
In machines of the type disclosed in said patent, manipulative devices are provided for setting data on the type carriers, from which the data is printed on an issuing web of paper, which web is fed out of the machine and severed to provide a receipt. Inthe present invention, the severing mechanism is provided with a doubleedged knife, so that, when the web is severed, an'issu'ing receipt and a stub are provided at one stroke of the double-edged knife. The receipt is issued from the machine, but the stub is forced into a chute, which chute guides the severed stub into the receptacle, which receptacle is under lock and key, so that it is under control of authorized persons at all times. A novel feature of the present invention is the provision of a vibrating means in the form of a paddle, located adjacent the knives and above the issuing web, which automatically forces the severed stub into a chute, and thereafter the chute is stub from becoming lodged in the chute, thus insuring the proper deposit of the stub in the receptacle.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION The machine disclosed in said Breitling patent is provided with a left side frame 11 (Figs. 1, 5, and 6), through which the main shaft 12 projects. The main shaft receives one complete rotation in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 1) during each machine operation. The machines of said patent are also provided with a second shaft 13 (Fig. 1), projecting through and supported in a bearing in the left side frame 11. When the manipulative devices are adjusted to set up data on the keyboard of the machine disclosed in the patent, a nest of sleeves 14, one sleeve being connected to each data-setting differential, is adjusted commensurate with the differential setting of the differential mechanism, and a transmitting gear (Fig. 1) transmits its differential movement to a type carrier 16, supported on a stub shaft 17 of the machine. In this manner, the type carriers 16 are set at the printing line, so that the desired data can be printed on an issuing web of paper 70.
Printing mechanism In the present invention, the data set up on the type carriers is printed on the web 70, so that both an issuing receipt and a stub receipt can be provided. Secured to the main shaft 12 is a double-lobe cam 18, which coacts with a roller 19, mounted on one arm of a bell crank 20, pivotally mounted in a bearing 31, supported by the left side frame 11. A horizontal arm 21 of the bell crank is urged upwardly by a spring 22 (Fig. 2), connected to the horizontal arm 20 andto a sleeve 23, carried on a stud 24. The arm 21 is provided with a pin 25 located near its end so as to be engageable between the tines of the bifurcated front end (Fig. 2) of a link 26, the upper tine being longer than the lower tine. The other end of the link 26 is also bifurcated to engage with a groove 27 of a bushing 28, this arrangement allowing reciprocation of the link 26, so that, when the link is in forward position-that is, toward the right, in Fig. 2-the pin 25 is located between the tines, whereby the link 26 is in position to move with the bell crank lever 21, whereas, when the link is in its left-hand position (Fig. 2), the lower tine passes out of engagement with the pin 25, so that the horizontal arm of the bell crank can be moved downwardly freely of the link 26.
The link 26 has fast thereon a stud 29, which is engaged by the bifurcated end of an arm 30, depending from and secured to the sleeve 23, free on the stud 24. The other end of the sleeve23 has secured thereto a finger lever 33. It will be seen, therefore, that, when the finger lever 33 is moved backwardly and forwardly, it rotates the sleeve 23, which in turn rotates the arm to move the link 26 forwardly or backwardly, respectively, to disengage or engage its tines and the pin 25. Also engaging between the tines of the link 26 is a reduced end of a stud 34, projecting laterally from a hammer-operating arm 35. The hammer-operating arm is secured to a bushing 36, freely pivoted on the bearing 31. The arm 35 is urged upwardly by a spring 37, stretched between the studs 34 and 24. At its free end, the arm 35 has a further stud 38, projecting oppositely to the stud 34 and engaging a slot 39 in a hammer-carrying arm 40, freely pivoted at one end on a stud 41, secured to the side frame 11. Secured at its free end to the middle of a channel 42 is a rubber hammer block 43 located above the type carriers 16.
The lower end of the finger lever has two notches, 44 and 45 (Fig. 1), formed therein, one or the other of which, dependent upon the position of the lever, is adapted to engage a pin 46, secured in the end of an arm 47, pivoted on the stud 41. The arm 47 is rigidly connected to the second arm 48 by a yoke 49. The notch 44 is relatively higher in relation to the pin 46 than is the notch 45, so that, when the pin 46 is engaged with the notch 45, as shown in Fig. l, the arms 47 and 48 and the yoke 49 are depressed, whereas, when the pin 46 is engaged with in the notch 44, the said arm assembly, comprising the arms 47 and 48, together with the yoke 49, is in elevated vibrated by a second mechanism to prevent the severed position. Approximately at the middle of the yoke 49 is an adjusting screw50, adapted to be locked by a locking nut.
Also pivoted on the stud 41 is a further pair of arms 51, rigidly connected together by a yoke 52, which underliesthe yoke 49, and a spring 53, stretched .between the yoke 52 and the stud 24, urges the yoke'52 upwardly to make contact thereof with the adjusting screw 50. The arms 51, at their free forward ends, carry between them a platen roller 54, located above an electro printing roller 55', carrying an electro printing plate 56.
The arm 51 nearest the left side frame 11 has an upward extension 57, extending from the upper end of which projects a pin 58, which engages a slot 59 at a place intermediate the length of the link 60. The pin 58 is resiliently coupled to the rear end of the link 60 by a spring 61. The forward end of the link 60 is pivoted to the apex of a substantially triangular-plate 62, which is pivoted at a point on its base to a short stud 63, secured to the side frame 11. At its other corner, the triangular plate 62 has rotatably mounted thereon a serrated pressure roller 64, which, when the ticket feed is required, engages with a serrated ticket strip feed roller 65, rotatably mounted on the stub shaft 17. The feed roller 65' has secured thereto a gear 66, which engages with a gear 67, pivoted on the stud 63, the latter gear engaging a gear 68, secured to the electro roller 55. The gear68 in turn engages a partial gear 69, secured to the main drive shaft 12, this partial gear normally, and during an initial portion of the machine cycle, engaging an arcuate depression in the periphery of the gear 68to hold the latter T- stationary during that portion of the machine cycle prior to the meshing of the respective teeth in the manner fully described in detail in the above-mentioned Breitling patent.
The paper web 70 is represented in Fig. l by dot-anddash lines and is fed from a supply roll in the manner shown in the above-mentioned Breitling patent, from which supply roll the web is fed between the platen roller 54 and the electro roller 55, and also between the hammer block 43 and the type carriers 16, the web '70being adapted to be gripped along one edge between the pressure rollers 65 and 64, respectively, whence the web is guided forwardly by a paper chute 71. An inking ribbon, carried by an ink ribbon frame (not shown), is interposed between the electro roller 55 and the type carriers 1 16 in the manner shown in the above-mentioned Breitling patent.
Mounted on the side frame 11, by screws (Figs. 1, 4, 5, and 6), in front of the mechanism described above,
is a sub-assembly mounting plate 76 (shown partly in section in Fig. 5) for a web-severing mechanism. The upper edge of the'plate 76 is slotted for a purpose referred to later.
The U-shaped bracket 77 is secured to the plate 76 by screws 78. Side walls 79 of the .U-shaped bracket 77 converge slightly toward their upper edges, and secured to the inside of each side wall 79 is a fixed knife blade 80, of thin resilient steel, the upper edges of which lie substantially in the same plane as the paper chute 71. The blades 80 also converge toward one another at their upper ends. At the ends nearest the frame 11, each of the bladgi 80 is provided with an upwardly-extending finger A slide, or pitman, 84 is supported vertically adjacent the frame 11 and the plate 76 by means of slots 85" and 86 therein, through which pass, respectively, a stud 87, secured to the frame 11, and the extension of the shaft 13, a spacing washer 88 being located on the stud 87 between the slide 84 and the frame 11, to compensate for the thickness of the plate 76. The slide 84' passes upwardly between the blades 80 and has its upper end 89 bent over approximately 85 degrees to overlap the blades, as shown in Fig. 5. Secured to this bent-over portion is a double-edged knife 90, which is normally located above the blades 80, so that the upwardly-extending fingers 81 of'the latter hear, one on each side thereof, and the cutting edges of the blades 80 gradually curve to the inclined position of the double-edged knife 90.
Beneath the double-edged knife 90 is an ejector blade 91, having a reduced tail portion 92 (Fig. 4), which-projects through an aperture in the slide 8.4 and also through a slot 93 in the plate 76, which slot has a nose 94, projecting upwardly at approximately the middle of: its bottom bounding surface, so as to be located beneath the tail 92. The tail 92 has both its outer edges bent upwardly, as at 93, to reinforce the tail 92 and confine the injector blade 91 in position; A- projecting leaf spring 82 is secured between the upper end 89 of the slide 34 and the knife 90, which spring bears on a flange 95 bent at right angles at the end of the tail 92 to cause the ejector blade 91 normally to lie substantially flush with and against the under surface of the double-edged knife 90.
The slide 84 is normally maintained in an upward position by a spring 96, stretched between an ear 97 on the slide 84 and a stud 99, secured in the frame 11. At the bottom of the slide84 is a roller 100, which cooperates with a cam 101, fixed to a collar 102, free on the shaft 13. Secured to the shaft 13 is a further collar 103, having a clutch lug 104. The collars 102 and 103 are interengaged by means of the lug 104 on the latter (shown in section in Fig. 1) engaging a slot 105 in the former, the slot being approximately double the width of the lug 104.
The shaft 13 rotates 360 degrees during a machine operation, and, during theinitial portion of the rotation, the clutch lug 104 moves away from the surface bounding the trailing end of the slot 105 in the collar 102, with which it normally engages, and executes an idle movement until it engages the surface bounding the leading end of the slot 105, whereafter it drives the collar 102 and thus the cam 101. The latter will rotate to force the roller 190 and thus the slide 84 downwardly until the roller 100 overrides the crest of theeam 101, whereupon the roller 100, under the urgency of the spring 96, rides up the arcuate surface of the cam 101, forcing the latter to rotate rapidly independently of the collar 103 until the clutch lug 104 is again engaged by the surface bounding the trailing end of the slot 105, thus to revert to the position indicated in Fig. 1. Thus the slide 84 is moved downwardly by the cam 101. Thereafter, the slide 84 is restored independently of the cam, and the slide also restores the cam to normal positioninrelation'to the slot 105.
It will be seenthat, on the descent'of the slide 84 and hencethe double-edged knife 90, ifa paper web 70 is located between the knife 90 and the blades 80, the knife 90. will descend and sever thatportion of the web between the blades 80, thus'cutting out a stub portion from the web 70 and simultaneously forming a ticket, which is at that time in position to be grasped by the operator in the usual way. i
A portion120. of the frontcasing of the machine is provided with a window 121, in its vertical wall. A boxlikeportion-122, having a-.window 123 at its top, is secured to the portion and contains a drawer 124, which is withdrawable from the front of the machine and which is also adapted to be lockedby a key inserted into a lock 125.
An inclinedchannel-shaped chuteis pivoted at its lower end adjacent the bottom of the window 121 in the portion. 120 of the casing, the pivot'being formed by a hinge 131 extending across and secured to the chute 130 and the-cabinet 120.
The sides ofthe upper end ofthe chute 130 are widened, and the chute rests on a pin 132, projecting from the slide 84, sothat normally the mouth of the chute rests approximately midway between the knife blades 80. When the slide 84 descends, the pin 132 allows the chute to pivot on the hinge 131, so that the upper end of the chute descends to rest against the left-hand knife blade 80, as viewed in Fig, 1', so as to insure that the stub portion of the web, when severed by the knife 90, is guided directly into the drawer 124.
Also secured to the top of the casing 120 is a further casing, having two similar arcuate sides 133, connected by a front wall 134, which terminates short of the top of the casing 120, so as to leave a ticket ejection opening Between the two arcuate sides 133' is freely pivoted a flap 136, the leading edge of which normally rests on the top of the casing 1205 The object of this flap is to maintain the ticket fiat on the top surface of the casing 120 and prevent any upward curve thereof which may cause it to be trapped in the further casing.
OPERATIONS A description will now be given of the operation of the machine and the issue of a ticket and the severing of a stub, it being'assumed that the lever 33 is in the position shown in Fig. l, in which position printing and feeding of a ticket will take place.
As fully described inthe above-mentioned Breitling patent, the main shaft 12. is rotated counter-clockwise 36,0
degrees (Fig. l), and the shaft 13 is given a 360-degree clockwise rotation during each operation of the machine. Shortly after the beginning cf the operation of the machine, the type carriers 16 are adjusted under control of the differential mechanism disclosed in said patent, and an alining mechanism alines the type carriers in the adjusted position. After the type carriers have been properly alined, a lobe 140 of the cam 18 engages the roller 19 of the hammer-operating arm 20, which, through the pin (Fig. 2), rotates the link 26 clockwise. During the clockwise movement of the link 26, the stud 34 is carried therewith, thus rocking the arm 35 clockwise. Clockwise rocking of the arm 35 about its pivot 31 lowers the stud 38 and, through the slot 39 in the printing hammer arm 40, lowers the printing hammer to impinge the web of the paper and the inking ribbon (not shown) against the type carriers to take an impression on the web. Continued operation of the machine rotates the printing hammer arm 40 reversely, after which the web is fed, and then the second lobe 141 of the cam 18 again rocks the hammeroperating arm 20 clockwise to take a second impression on the paper Web 70, which impression is made on the portion of the web which will form a stub. It may be mentioned here that the fixed data from the electro plate 56 is printed on the ticket at the end of the previous machine operation.
The feeding of the paper web between the two printing operations is effected by the teeth of the partial gear 69 engaging the teeth of gear 68, which in turn rotate the gears 67 and 66, the latter being secured to the feed roller 65. The timing of the feed is such that, when the paper web is fed, the speed is such that, when the lobe 141 operates the printing hammer to make a second impression, the web is fed at a speed considerably slower than the'operation of the printing hammer, and therefore a clear impression is obtained on the web as the web is being fed. Immediately after the second impression is made, the electro plate 56 comes into position for printing on the web section, which forms the heading of the next succeeding ticket to be issued. At the end of the feeding operation, the paper web occupies a position such that the leading end of the web has been fed forwardly beneath the flap 136 and is outside the ticket aperture 135, where it can be removed by the operator after the knife severs the ticket from the web in the manner presently described. In this position, the initial electro print and the first amount to be printed are located beyond the right-hand blade the portion of the ticket bearing the second amount is located between the blades 80; and the second electro print is to the left of the left-hand blade 80.
At this point in the operations, the lug 104 on the collar 102, secured to the shaft 13, picks up the collar 103, and the latter commences to rotate, carrying with it the earn 101. The latter, engaging with the roller on the slide 84, causes the slide to be depressed, and the double-edged knife 90 descends to sever the portion of the ticket strip between both blades 80, thus cutting out a stub portion and leaving a ticket portion on the housing outside the chute 135, where it is held by the flap 136. Shortly after this severance is effected, the tail 92 of the ejector blade 91 meets, and is pressed upwardly by, the nose 94 of the plate 76, causing the ejector blade 91 to pivot counter-clockwise, as viewed in Fig. 4, so that it flips the severed stub downwardly.
As the slide 84 descends, the pin 132 permits the chute to pivot about the hinge 131 until its upper end rests against the left-hand knife blade 80, after which the ticket is pushed down into the chute by the ejector blade 91 and through the chute into the reception drawer 124.
At this point, where the cycle of machine operation is almost completed, the crest of the cam 101 overrides the roller 100, and the latter now rides up the inclined rear surface of the cam 101 to restore it rapidly to normal position, where the trailing edge of the slot 105 in the collar 102 engages the back edge of the lug 104 of the collar 103. It is to be pointed out that the restoration of the slide 84 and the cam 101 by means of the spring 96 is necessitated by the late timing of the operation of the slide 84 within the machine cycle. The cam 100 overrides its dead-center position with respect to the roller 100 a moment prior to the end of the machining cycle, and therefore there is insuificient period remaining in the machine cycle during which the slide 84 could otherwise be fully restored.
When the slide 84 is returned by the spring 96, the
action is very rapid. This rapid movement of the slide 84 is taken advantage of to obtain a vibrating movement of the chute 130, which is accomplished by the stud 132 striking the bottom of the chute 130 near the end of its return movement. The chute 130 is resting against the left-hand blade 80 at the time the stub is severed from the web and dropped into the chute, and at this time the stud 132 is spaced from the bottom of the chute 130. At this time, the stub has a tendency to remain in the chute 130, through friction or for some other reason. When the stud 132 rises rapidly and strikes the under side of the chute, the chute is given a vibrating motion, which motion jostles the stub in the chute to free it to fall by gravity into the drawer 124.
When no receipt is to be issued by the machine, the lever 33 is moved clockwise (Fig. 1), and, when it so moves, the pin 46 rises upwardly and engages the notch 44 of the lever 33. In consequence, both yokes 49 and 52 rise, and, since the platen roller 54 for the electro printing is carried by the latter, the platen roller is lifted out of contact with the electro roller 56. Also, the upward extension 57 of the one arm 51 of the yoke 52 rotates counterclockwise to cause the stud 58, engaging the left-hand end of the slot 59 (Fig. l), to move the link 60 leftwardly and rotate the triangularly-shaped piece 62 counter-clockwise, thus lifting the pressure roller 64 from engagement with the feed roller 65. Thereafter, during the machine operation, no feed of the paper web will take place, inasmuch as both the platen 54 and the pressure roller 64 are out of feeding position.
Also, when the lever 33 is moved clockwise in Fig. l, the arm 30 (Fig. 2) is rocked clockwise to shift the slide 26 to the left (Fig. 2), thus disengaging the tines of the slide 26 from the stud 25. Thereafter, when the cam 18 is operated to actuate the bell crank 20, the slide 26 is not operated, and therefore the printing platen 54 is not operated to take an impression.
While the form of mechanism shown and described herein is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form or embodiment disclosed herein, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various other forms.
What is claimed is:
1. In a machine of the class described having a paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web through the chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the web in duplicate; severing means to sever two sections off of the leading end of the web after the web has said data printed thereon and the web has been fed adjacent the severing means by said feeding means, said severing means comprising two stationary knives; a double-edged knife coacting with said stationary knives; and means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections off of the leading end of the web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket, each having said data printed thereon.
2. In a machine of the class described having a paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web through the chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the Web in duplicate; severing means to sever two sections off of the leading end of the web, after the web has said data printed thereon and the web has been fed adjacent to the severing means by said feeding means, said severing means comprising two stationary knives; a doubleedged knife coacting with said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections off of the leading edge of the web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket, each having the said data printed thereon; a table to receive the issuing ticket; and a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive the stub ticket.
3. In a machine of the class described having a paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web through the chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the web in duplicate; severing means to sever two sections off of the leading end of the web, after the web has said data printed thereon and the web has been fed adjacent to the severing means by said feeding means, said severmg means comprising two stationary knives; a double edged knife coacting with said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections off of the leading end of the web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket, each having the said data printed thereon; a table to receive the issuing ticket; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive the stub ticket; and a second chute beneath the knives for receiving and guiding the stub ticket into the receptacle.
4. In a machine of the class described having a paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web through the chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the web in duplicate; severing means to sever two sections otf of the leading end of the web after the web has said data printed thereon and the web has been fed adjacent to the severing means by said feeding means, said severing means comprising two stationary knives; a doubleedged knife coacting with said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections olf of the leading end of the web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket, each having the said data printed thereon; a table to receive the issuing ticket; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive the stub ticket; at second chute beneath the knives for receiving and guiding the stub ticket into the receptacle; and an ejector blade located between the doubleedged knife and the severed stub ticket, and operable to force the severed ticket into the second chute after the stub ticket has been severed from the web.
5. In a machine of the class described having a paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the Web through the chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the web, in duplicate; severing means to sever two sections off of the leading end of the web after the web has said data printed thereon and the web has been fed adjacent to the severing means by said feeding means, said severing means comprising two stationary knives; a double-edged knife coacting with said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously out two sections off of the leading end of the web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket, each having the said data printed thereon; a table to receive the issuing ticket; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive the stub ticket; a second chute beneath the knives for receiving and guiding the stub ticket into the receptacle; an ejector blade located between the double-edged knife and the severed stub ticket, one end of said ejector blade being pivotally supported by the means to actuate the double-edged knife; a resilient means to normally maintain the ejector blade in contact with the under side of the double-edged knife; and a fixed stop in the path of movement of one end of the ejector blade whereby the ejector blade is pivotally moved in relation to the doubleedged knife when said one end of the ejector blade strikes the fixed stop after the means to actuate the double-edged knife has moved to cause the double-edged knife to sever the stub ticket from the web to thereby cause the ejector blllade to force the severed stub ticket into the second c ute.
6. In a machine of the class described having a paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web through a chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the web in duplicate; severing means to sever two sections off of the leading end of the web after the web has said data printed thereon and the web has been fed adjacent to the severing means by said feeding means, said severing means comprising two stationary knives; a double-edged knife coacting with said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections off of the leading end of the web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket, each having said data printed thereon; a table to receive the severed ticket; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive the stub ticket; a second chute beneath the knives for receiving and guiding the stub ticket into the receptacle; an ejector blade located between the double-edged knife and the severed stub ticket and operable to force the severed stub ticket into the second chute after the stub ticket has been severed from the web, one end of said ejector blade projecting through an opening in and extending beyond the means to actuate the double-edged knife, said opening providing a pivotal support for the ejector blade; a resilient means to normally maintain the ejector blade in contact with the under side of the double-edged knife; and a fixed stop in the path ofmovement of one end of the ejector blade whereby the ejector blade is pivotally moved in relation to the double-edged knife when sard one end of the ejector blade strikes the fitted stop, after the means to actuate the double-edged knife has moved to cause the double-edged knife to sever the stub ticket from the web to thereby cause the ejector blade to force the severed stub ticket into the second chute.
7. In a machine of the class described having a paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to'feed the leading end of the web through the chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the web in duplicate; severing means to sever two sections off of the leading end of the web after the web hassaid data printed thereon and the web has been fed ad acent to the severing means by said feeding means, said severing means comprising two stationary knives; a double edged knife coacting with said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously out two sections off of the leading end of the web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket each having said'data printed thereon; a table to receive the severed ticket; a
receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive the stub ticket; a second chute beneath the knives for receiving and guiding the stub ticket into the receptacle; and means to vibrate the second chute after the stub ticket has been deposited in the chute to cause the stub ticket to move freely into the receptacle.
8. In a machine of the class described having a'paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web through the chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the web in duplicate; severing means to sever two'sectrons off of the leading end of the web after the web has'said data printed thereon and the web has been fed adjacent to the severing means by said feeding means, said severing means comprising two stationary knives; a doubleedged knife coacting with said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections otf of the leading end of the web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket, each having the said data printed thereon; a second chute, the lower endof which is pivotally supported on one edge of the receptacle; a projection on said means to actuate the doubleedged knife, said projection located beneath the upper end of the second chute so as to support the second chute in position to receive and guide a severed stub ticket into the receptacle, said projection when lowered, upon initial movement of said means to actuate the double-edged knife, releasing the upper end of the second chute until the upper end of the chute is arrested by one of said' two stationary knives, and said projection engaging and vibrating the chute when the projection is restored to initial position.
9. In a machine of the class described having a paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web through a chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the web in duplicate; severing means to sever two sections off of the leading end of the web after the web has said data printed thereon and the web has been fed adjacent to the severing means by said feeding means, said severing means comprising two stationary knives; a doubleedged knife coacting with said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections off of the leading end of the Web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket, each having the said data printed thereon; a table to receive the severed issuing ticket; a receptacle on the level below the severing means to receive the stub ticket; a second chute, the lower end thereof being pivotally supported on one end of the receptacle; a projection on said means to actuate the double-edged knife, said projection located beneath the upper end of the second chute so as to support the chute in position to receive and guide the severed stub into the receptacle, said projection when lowered, upon initial movement of said means to actuate the doubleedged knife, releasing the upper end of the second chute until the upper end of the second chute is arrested by one of said two stationary knives, said projection engaging and vibrating the chute when the projection is restored to initial position; a cam to actuate the last-named means to cause the double-edged knife to sever thestub' ticket from the web; and a spring to restore said lastnamed means rapidly to said initial position.
10. In a machine of the class described having a paper chute, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web through the chute and out of the machine; printing mechanism to print data on the web in duplicate; severing means to sever two sections off of the leading end of the web after the web has said data printed thereon and the web has been fed adjacent to the severing means by said feeding means, said severing means comprising two stationary knives; a doubleedged knife coacting with said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections off of the leading end of the web to form an issuing ticket and a stub ticket, each having said data printed thereon; a table to receive the severed issuing ticket; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive the stub ticket; a second chute, the lower end thereof being pivotally supported on one edge of the receptacle; a projection on said means to actuate the double-edged knife, said projection located beneath the upper end of the second chute so as to support the second chute in position to receive and guide a severed stub ticket into the receptacle, said projection when lowered, upon initial movement of said means to actuate the double-edged knife, releasing the upper end of the second chute until the upper end of the second chute is arrested by one side of one of two stationary knives, said projection engaging and vibrating the second chute when the projection is restored to initial position; a cam to actuate the last-named means; power-operated means to actuate said cam; a loose connection between the cam and the power-operated means effective during initial movement to positively operate the cam to cause the double-edged knife to sever a stub ticket from the web, and said loose connection providing means to actuate the cam independently of said power-operated means after the stub ticket has been severed from the web; and a spring to actuate the cam independently of the poweroperated means to restore said last-named means rapidly to said initial position.
11. In a machine of the class described, having a table for receiving the leading end of a web of record material, the combination of web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web to the table; severing means located at the rear of the leading end of the web after the web has been fed to the table, said severing means comprising two stationary knives and a double-edged knife, each edge thereof coacting with one of said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections off of the leading edge of the web to form two tickets, one of said tickets being deposited on the table; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive the other one of said tickets; a chute beneath the knives for receiving and guiding said other one of the tickets into the receptacle; and an ejector blade located between the double-edged knife and the said other one of the tickets and operable to force the said other one of the tickets into the chute after the saig other one of the tickets has been severed from the we 12. In a machine of the class described, having a table for receiving the leading end of a web of record material, the combination of web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web to the table; severing means located to the rear of the leading end of the web after the web has been fed to the table, said severing means comprising two stationary knives and a double-edged knife, each edge thereof coacting with one of the stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously out two sections off the leading end of the web to form two tickets; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive one of said tickets; a chute beneath the knives for receiving and guiding the said one ticket into the receptacle; an ejector blade located between the double-edge knife and the said one ticket, one end of said ejector blade being pivotally supported by the means to actuate the double-edged knife; a resilient means to normally maintain the ejector blade in contact with the under side of the double-edged knife; and a fixed stop in the path of one end of the ejector blade, whereby the ejector blade is pivotally moved in relation to the double-edged knife when said one end of the ejector blade strikes the fixed stop after the means to actuate the double-edged knife has moved to cause the double-edged knife to sever the said one ticket from the web to thereby cause the ejector blade to force the said severed one ticket into the chute.
13. In a machine of the class described having a table for receiving the leading end of a web of record material, the combination of a web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web to the table; severing means located to the rear of the leading end of the web after the web has been fed to the table, said severing means comprising two stationary knives and a double-edged knife, each edge thereof coacting with one of said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections off of the leading end of the web to form two tickets; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive one of said tickets; a chute beneath the knives for receiving and guiding the said one ticket into the receptacle; an ejector blade located between the double-edged knife and the said one severed ticket and operable to force the said severed ticket into the chute after the said second ticket has been severed from the web; an ejector blade located between the double-edged knife and the severed one ticket, one end of said ejector blade projecting through an opening in and extending beyond the means to actuate the double-edged knife, said opening providing a pivotal support for the ejector blade; a resilient means to normally maintain the ejector blade in contact with the under side of the double-edged knife; and a fixed stop in the path of movement of one end of the ejector blade whereby the ejector blade is pivotally moved in relation to the double-edged knife when said one end of the ejector blade strikes the fixed stop after the means to actuate the double-edged knife has moved to cause the double-edged knife to sever the said ticket from the web to thereby cause the ejector blade to force said one severed ticket into the chute.
14. In a machine of the class described, having a table for receiving the leading end of a web of record material, the combination of web-feeding means to feed the leading end of the web to the table; severing means located to the rear of the leading end of the web after the web has been fed to the table, said severing means comprising two stationary knives and a double-edged knife, each edge thereof coacting with one of said stationary knives; means to actuate the double-edged knife to simultaneously cut two sections ofi of the leading end of the web to form two tickets; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive one of said tickets; a chute beneath the knives to receive and guide said one ticket into the receptacle; and means to vibrate the chute after the said one ticket has been deposited in the chute to cause the ticket to move freely into the receptacle.
15. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a record material feeding means; severing means comprising two stationary knives and a double-edged knife, each edge thereof coacting with one of said stationary knives; actuating means movable from an initial position into an operated position to actuate the doubleedged knife to simultaneously out two sections off of the leading end of the web to form two tickets, said actuating means being thereafter restored to said initial position to restore the double-edged knife; a chute, the lower end of which is pivotally supported on one edge of the receptacle; and a projection on said actuating means to actuate the double-edged knife, said projection located beneath the upper end of the chute so as to support the chute in position to receive and guide a severed ticket into the receptacle when the actuating means is in said initial position, said projection being lowered upon movement of said actuating means out of initial position to actuate the double-edged knife, to release the upper end of the chute until the upper end of the chute is arrested by one of said two stationary knives, and said projection engaging and vibrating the chute when the said actuating means, and thereby the projection is restored to initial position.
16. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a web-feeding mechanism; severing means to sever a ticket from the web; actuating means movable from an initial position into an operated position to actuate the severing means, said actuating means being thereafter restored to said initial position; a receptacle on a level below the severing means to receive a severed ticket; a chute, the lower end thereof being pivotally supported on one end of the receptacle; a projection on said actuating means, said projection located near the upper end of the chute so as to support the chute in position to receive and guide the severed ticket into the receptacle when the actuating means is in said initial position, said lag-94,912
projection when lowered upon initialmovement'ofsaid actuating means, releasing the upperend of'the chute until the upper end of the chute is arrested by one elementof said severing means, said projection engaging and vibrating-the chute when the actuating means, and thereby the projection are restored to initial position; a cam to actuate the actuating means to cause the severing means to sever-the ticket from the web; and a spring to restore said actuating means rapidly to initial position.
