Be it known that l, SCHAMU M. Mosca- COWITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York,in the county and Stale of New York, have invented new Aand useful lin- Vproveunents in Spool-Holders, ot' which the following is a specilication.

My invention relates to a device intended to hold spools ot' cotton, silk,` and other thread, twine, and similar materials; and the objects sought to besecured'are that the holder shall be adapted to protect the'thlead from dirt and dust, exposing only a sufticient surface thereof to show its colorto prevent the unwinding of the thread, except when intentionally drawn from the spool, to automatically adjust itself to spools of varied sizes, to indicate the number or size of the thread therein, and by its appliances to furnish means for its suspension and for the storage of needles; and with these objects in View my invention consists in aspoolholder provided with independentheads or end pieces and elastic sides or walls, whereby it automatically bodily grasps and adjusts itself to the size of the spool therein contained, and produces a tension which prevents unintentional unwinding ofthe thread; and my invention further consists in other features of construction, hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claims.

The body portion of the holder consists of a piece of elastic or tempered metal or other suitable substance heilt to form a central tube or half-tube, B, and two clasping-walls, A A, curved into a substantially tubular form, and having their end edges-bent slightly outward, as clearly shown in the end view.` If desired, the tube and half-tube may be conjointly used by securing the latter upon or at either side of the former. In the tube B there isat lits lower end a screw-threaded plug, b,`and in the upper end thereof I introduce a secondary tube or stopper, b', (see Fig. 6,) which is slitted, as at b2, to form two spring-tongues, b3 b3, which stand normally outside ot' the peripheral plane of the tube, so as to press against the inner surface of the tube B to retain the stopper therein. By this construction there is provided a suitable receptacle for needles, and. the holder proper is adapted, by removing the stopper and the plug, to be supported upon the usualI spool-post ot' a sewing-machine. 'As thus far described, it will beseeu that by separating the free edges of the body portion of the holder a spool ot' thread or silk can be placed therein and securely held from turning,and thus un? winding the thread, as is the case when, witht out first securing the end ofthe thread in the usual notch cut in the spool-flange, the spool.

,therefrom and bent to form a hook, c, while the exterior coil is bent at a right angle to the head c', and is secured in the tube, or, as it` may be, andpreierably is in this instance, a halftube, B, and at the opposite end of the tube is again bent at o2 at a right angle and inwardly, where it may again be coiled to form another head, or, as in this instance, said head is formed ofa separate disk of metal or other suitable material secured thereto, as shown 'at c3.

To indicate the size of thread in the holder the body portion is impressed with or bears indicating-marks a,'which are identical with similar marks used in the trade to distinguish threads of different tineness or material. As silk is generally lettered the holder bears the letters A, B, C, l), O, OO, and as thread of other materials is numbered by multiples of' lllas 5U, 60, 70, &c.-I provide the initial digit of a number on one of the heads, as shown, whereby the inclosed thread is indicated as to tineness,

and by means ot the space between the two ends of the body portion suflicient; thread is exposed to clearly show its color.

It will be seen -that between the indicatingmarksaa series of holes, a2, are formed. When a spool is inserted into a holder, one should .be

selected bearing on its end plate the proper mark, and the free end of the thread should be passed through a hole adjacent to the proper mark on the body, and then the spool should be forced within the holder, when the clampingsections A A will securely retain the spool therein.

It will also be noticed that the coil c maj7 be formed so as to press upon the end ot' the contained spool, and in this manner produce 4the desired friction thereon.

It is evident that the suspensionhook c may be attached at another portion of the holder than that shown, and that other than solid walls may be provided, and. by their inherent elasticity clasp directly varied sizes ot' spools, without a material departure from the gist ot' my invention, and that the tube or half-tube B may be omitted, it' desired.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A spool-holder comprisingindependent head or end pieces and elastic walls arranged to clasp the spool and prevent the same from rolling therein, substantially as shown and described.

3. A stopper fora needle-holder, comprising a tube slitted to forni proj ectin gsprin g-ton gues, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination ot' a spool-holder and a tube having a removable plug and a stopper provided with projecting spring-tongues, substantially as shown and described.

5. A spool-holder comprising elastic Walls having a series of perforations and bearing adjacent indicating marks, substantially as shown and described. i

6. A spool-holder having elastic walls and an end disk bearing indicating-marks corresponding with each other, substantially as shown and described.

7. A spool-holder consisting of elastic Walls arranged to clasp'a spool bodily to cover the saine, except at a portion exposed to show the nesses.
