STEAM-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,676, dated December 5, 1882. I Application filed May 9,1882. (No model.)
L To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HOPKINS, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Steam-Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.-
My improvements relate to pumping-engines for feeding boilers; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figurel is a side elevation, partly sectional, of myimproved pumping-engine as applied in connection with a beam-engine. Fig. 2 is a plan view.

'n is the suction-chamber of the pumps, provided with a suction-pipe, n, and fitted with valvesp at its ends. 0 is the discharge-chamber of the pump, provided with discharge-pipe 0, and fitted with valves g at its ends. The chambers'n 0 are connected at their ends containing the valves, and at that point they connect by pipes r r with the respective pumpeylinders It, the connection being between the valvesp q at each end.
By this construction and arrangement the pumps will operate alternately to draw the feedwater in at the suction-pipe n and through the suction-chamber, and by their return-strokes the water will be forced into the dischargechamber 0 and to the discharge-pipe 0, which being connected to the boilers, a continuous supply ot'feed-water will be insured.
The plungers of the pump may be ofany suitable constrnction. As shown, they are of cylindrical form and work through a stuffing-box at the upper ends of the cylinder.
It will be observed that the suction and discharge chambers care provided at their ends with the opposite valves,p q, and are connected by the pipes r, which also lead to the pump-cylinders k [6, so that the pump-cylinders are connected, and the Water is drawn into each cylinder in the upstroke of its piston and forced out in its downstroke, the two pumpcylinders being connected with each other through the pipesr and suction and discharge chambers n 0. This construction is extremely simple, compact, and cheap, and the pistons of the pump-cylinders act alternately, one discharging while the other is raising the feedwnter; and a single suction and discharge pipe only are requisite, and the number of valves used in the construction of doubleacting pumps decreased.
I am aware that a double-acting pump provided with "ertical cylinders, having pistons operated by a walkingabeam or other suitable mechanism connected with the piston-rods, the pump-cylinders being connected at their lower ends by a suction chamber having checkvalves near its ends, and the cylinders being provided'w ith branch pipes connecting with an air-chamber arranged between the pump-cylinders, so that the water is drawn into each cylinder in the upstroke of its piston and is forced out in its downstroke, has heretofore been employed, and l therefore lay no claim, broadly, to such construction, my invention being confined to the construction and arrangement of parts described and claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a double-acting pump, the combination, with the pump-cylinders It It, plungers ll, and walking-beam f, connected therewith, of-the horizontal suction and discharge chambers n 0, arranged one aboye the other, and provided with the suction-pipe n and discharge-pipe 0, and check-valves p g at each end, and end pipes, r, substantially as shown and described.
