My invention relates to toys and more particularly to toys. of the roll-back type; this application being a continuation-in-part of my copending application Serial Number 248,909, filed September 29, 1951, now abandoned.
Oneof the objects of my invention is'to provide a roll-back toy which is constructed in such a manner that the assembling of the components thereof is greatly facilitated.
Another object of my invention is to provide a roll-back toy which is simple inconstruction, durable in use, efficient in operationand economical in manufacture.
An important objectv of my invention is to provide a roll-back toy: of the'foregoing described character which lends itself to ready operation by relatively small children and which is highly amusing thereto.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings from which the several featuresof the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Referring to the drawings wherein like reference character designate like-parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a verticalsectionalview of atoy constructed in accordance with my invention Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
In practicing my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, I provide a pair of wheels or disclike members 5 each being constructed with a felly or rim 6 connected to a hub or have 7 by means of spokes 8. The inner radial faces of the rims 6 are formed with bosses 9 surrounded by spaced collars I defining circular seats in which are accommodated the ends of tubular members II, the bosses 9 being disposed within the ends of the members I l as clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. Each of the hubs l is of a relatively wide annular construction and formed on its inner peripheral face, adjacent the outer radial face, with a radially extending substantially T-shaped finger l2 formed with body and end portions I 3 and [4, respectively.
The members ll serve to connect the wheels together in spaced relation and thus provide a cage in which is disposed a figure l5 indicative, in the present instance, of a cowboy mounted upon a, horse, the figure l5 being of a hollow con-- struction and formed with a detachable head IS. The feet of the horse have incorporated thereinrelatively heavy weights I! while the neck of the cowboy, on which the head I5 is fixed, constitutes a portion of an elongated member is extending into the figure l5 through the neck opening of the cowboy. The sides of the figure are formed with hollow trunnions I9 through which is trained the runs 20 of a resilient member, for instance, an elastic band 2|. The end sections of the band 2| are looped over the'fingers 12' about the body portions I3 thereof and adjacent the end portion [4. When the band 2| is thus trained through the figure and secured to the fingers I2, it serves to maintain the figure suspended within the confines of the cage.
The member or bar 18 is of a sufficient length and extends between the runs 20 of the band 2| to effect winding or twisting of the runs 20 about each other when the cage is unidirectionally moved over a path of travel and rotated relative to the figure by reason of the weights I1 serving to maintain the figure !5 in an upright position during the movement of the cage. When the runs 20 are thus wound and movement terminated in the initial direction of travel, the cage is rotated in the opposite direction due to the unwinding of the runs.
The outer faces of the hubs l are provided with suitable hub caps 22, the latter being formed with inwardly directed circumferential flanges disposed within seats formed about the hubs. The hub caps, as well as the members I l, are secured to the wheel by means of adhesive or the like. The neck opening, formed in the cowboy of the figure I5, is defined by a relatively long wall 23 for frictional engagement with the member l8 whereby the latter is maintained in fixed relation with the figure and may be readily detached therefrom for any reason, for instance, replacement of the band 2|.
In assembling, one end of the band 2| is passed through the trunnions I9 of the figure l5 whereupon both ends of the band are looped about the fingers 12 thus disposing the figure between the hubs. When thus arranged, the tubular members II are inserted between the rims and over the bosses 9 and sealed thereto by the aforementioned adhesive or the like. In this position of the components, the member I8 is inserted through the neck opening, defined by the wall 23, to dispose its lower end between the runs 20 of the band 2|, while the hub caps 22 are applied over the hubs I as heretofore mentioned. When thus assembled, the toy is ready for use and is rotatable in one direction to effect a roll-back in the opposite direction. With the exception of the weights I1 and the band 2|, the other components may be constructed of suitable light materials including the so-called plastics.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and subcombinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined solely to the use herein disclosed in connection therewith as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles involved which are capable of extended application in various forms, and the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a roll-back toy, a pair of spoked wheels each having a rim and a hub, said rims having confronting faces provided with bosses, spaced tubular members disposed between said rims and having end portions embracing said bosses for securing said wheel together in fixed relation, said tubular members coacting with the spokes of said wheels to constitute a cage, said hubs being each equipped with a radially extending finger disposed therein, an elastic band looped about said fingers and having a pair of spaced runs extending between said hubs, a hollow figure loosely mounted on said runs and within the confines of said cage for rotation within and relative to said cage and having upper and lower portions, said figure being of a size to permit said rotation and viewable within said cage between said spokes and said tubular members, an elongated member detachably carried by said figure and provided with a head and a shank with said head constituting an essential characteristic of said figure, said shank extending through said upper portion and into said figure between said runs for coaction with the latter to effect winding of said runs about each other upon rotation of said wheels relative to said figure, weight means carried within said lower portion of said figure and below said runs for maintaining said figure against rotation with said cage whereby said runs are efiective for rotating said cage during unwinding of said runs, said shank being withdrawable from within said figure to permit replacement of said band.
2. In a roll-back toy, a pair of spaced wheels, spacers extending between the rims of said wheels and connecting said wheels together for unitary rotation, said spacers being spaced from each other and coacting with said wheels to define a cage, said wheels being provided with confronting hubs each formed with an interior finger, a hollow figure disposed within said cage and viewable from the outside of said cage, said figure being provided with trunnions extending into said hubs for relative movement therewith, said figure being provided with a transverse passage extending through said trunnions, an endless elastic member detachably looped about said fingers and having a pair of coextending runs extending through said passage and loosely mounting said figure on said member, said figure being provided with a removable section constituting a characteristic of the figure and having a portion disposed within said figure and extending into said passage between said runs for coaction with the latter to effect winding of said runs about each other upon rotation of said wheels relative to said figure, said section being removable to effect withdrawal of said portion from within said passage to permit replacement of said member, and weight means carried by said figure for precluding rotation of said figure with said wheels.
