SLIDING DO0R- HANDLE. IPat nted Dec: 5, 1882-:
.Lock Handles,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. SPARKS, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO P. & F. OOBBIN, OF SAME PLACE.
SLIDING DOOR-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,564, dated December 5, 1882 Application filed May 31, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAME. SPARKS, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Doorof which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sliding door-lock handles in'wliich a rhomboidal-shaped handleis made to slide obliquely through the face-plate in and out of the lockcase; and the objects of my invention are to produce a sliding door-lock handle which will slide into the lock-case by gravity, and which shall also be of very simple construction, inex pensive, and easy to operate. I attain these objects by the simple construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is afront elevation of a sliding door-lock with my handle applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with a portion of the cap-plate broken away. A designates the face-plate of the lock, and B the case. The handle 0 is in rhombic or rhomboidal form, whereby its upper and lower Sld6S,tt a, are inclined, while its outer end, I), is
vertical or parallel with the face-plate. The handle is provided with a slotted shank, c, which takes the same angle of inclination as do the sides a a. A stud, d, on the lock-case enters the slotted shank to guide that end of the handle, while the other end is guided by the mortise in the face-plate through which the handle slides. By the side of the handle fin ger-recesses h h are formed in the faceplate, to enable the handle to be pulled out of the case into the position indicated by broken lines in Fig. 2, when it is ready for use. Upon releasing the fingers from the handle it will slide by the force of gravity back into 'the case by reason of its inclined position.
I claim as my invention- The sliding door-lock handle, substantially as hereinbet'ore described, consisting of the lock-case, the face-plate provided with handlemortise and the rhomboidal or rhom hie-shaped handle fitted to slide obliquely through said face-plate into and out of the case.
WILLIAM E.'SPARKS.
