To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, J OSEPH FOWLER Rus- LING, a citizen of the United States,andaresident of Lawrence, in the countyof Tioga and State of Pennsylvanimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for Packing Butter, 850., of which the following is a specification. I

My invention is an improvement in cases for packing and transporting butter, lard, and other articles; and it consists in constructing the same as fully described and claimed hereinafter, and as,illnstrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section, showing my improved case. Figs. 2 and 3 are sections showing modifications; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view, illustrating the mode of removing the contents of one of the sections;

The case consists essentially of two parts,

each constructed to constitute a cover or cap for the other. These parts may be of any suitable material, but for cleanliness and cheapness are preferably of glass or other vitreous material, which may be molded accurately and cheaply to any desired form.

As shown in Fig. l, the sections are cupshaped, each with a screw-flange, a, adapted to receive a ring, B, which serves as a coupling for the two sections, a flange, 0, within the ring constituting a bearing,againstwhich abutsan annular neck or rim, 1), of each section, so that a sheet, i, of paper, tin, or other material stretched over and in contact with the contents of each vessel will be tightly clamped between the neck b and the flange e of that vessel, excluding air, as well as bolding the contents in place. The two sections, filled and placed mouth to mouth and thus clamped together with the intervening flexible sheets, constitute a hermetically-closed package, which will preserve the contents for an indefinite length of time, yet is capable of bei'rom either section without disturbing the other or permitting the access of air thereto, only the sheet 45 ot the vessel that is removed being disturbed.

The two sections with two parallel partitions may be connected in difierent ways; one' may screw on the other as in Fig. 3; or the two may be clamped together by wedges f passing through slotted pins g, extending from one section through the perforated flange of the other, as shown in Fig. 2.

There is always a considerable loss in packages containing butter, lard, jellies, &c., resulting from the adhesion of the contents to the inner sides of the receptacles, while any effort to remove the contents in a whole or unbroken condition is seldom successful. To avoid these objections, such receptacles are provided with movable ends or bottoms capable of being removed from the inside. I thread the bottom piece, D, to fit the threaded flange of the body, as shown in Fig. 2, the body being detached by turning it while the bottom piece is held stationary. This enables me to clamp a packing tightly at the bottom.

Any suitable emblem or device may be enthe bottom D, the removal of which leaves the imprint upon the material with which it is in contact.

It will be obvious that the packages of this character are specially adapted for the transportation and delivering of' butter of the finer qualities, where it is essential that the lump shall be finely molded and free from' blemishes.

I claim- 1. The combination,i butter, &c., of two receptacles, an intermediate connecting device, and two intermediate sheets, i, each clamped to one of the receptacles independent of the other by said device, the receptacles beingindependently connected to and detachable from said connecting device, as set forth.

2. The receptacles A A, a securing device connecting the same month to mouth, and detachable from each independently, and having bearings between which and each receptacle to clamp a sheet, t', as specified.
