COMBING MACHINE FOR TEXTILE FIBERS Filed July 11, 1950 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 I u vs/yra a: c4 RLO Jams/ =5 A TOME u Patented June 15, i954 UNITED srares PATENT OFFICE 2,680,885 CGMBING MACHINE FOR TEXTILE FIBERS Carlo Schleifer, Milan, Italy Application July 11, 1950, Serial No. 173,127 Claims priority, application Italy July 22, 1949 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a rectilinear combing machine, particularly suitable for the curling of cotton or other short fibers, as distinct from combing machines of the Heilmann type for W001 or other long fibers and having entirely different operative features.
An object of this invention is to provide a combing machine, in which the scissor arms carrying the nippers are mounted on a lever rocking about a stationary axis and are provided with means for alternately moving said nippers in front of the circular comb and with detaching rollers, respectively, alonga' path comprising two arcs of a circle having their centres on the axis of the circular comb and of the stationary pivot of said lever, respectively.
A further object of this invention is to provide a combing machine of the type referred to above, having stationary guide means, causing the closed nippers to follow a path coinciding with an arc of a circle having its centre on the axis of the circular comb over the full period during which said nippers are within the range of said circular comb, while in the period during which the nippers approach the detaching rolls, the former are drawn apart, the upper nipper following a path such as to be rapidly withdrawn from the lower nipper, which follows a path along an arc of a circle having its centre on the axis of the pivot of the rocking lever.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a combing machine of the type referred to above a spring between the lever and free end of the arm carrying the lower nipper to permit a slight adjustment of the path followed by said lower nipper over the period during which the nippers are closed and are situated within the range of the circular comb, this adjustment permitted by the spring being obtained by the action of the inner nipper on the lower one which therefore describes during the above indicated period an arc of a circle having its center on the axis of the circular comb.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a combing machine of the type referred to above a supporting plate fulcrumed on the axis of the circular comb and carrying the stationary pivot, of oscillation of the lever having pivoted thereto the scissor arms carrying the nippers. In this manner, a slight rotation of the plate serves for adjusting the spacing between the lower nipper and detaching roll, without, however, changing the width of oscillation of the nippers.
Further characteristics and advantages of this invention will be understood from the appended the device in the closed specification referring to the accompanying draw- I denotes the pivot of the rotating comb P, I
having mounted at one end a normally fixed plate which may be adjusted by means of an eccentrio 5 acting on a pivot 3 of the plate 2 by means of the lever l.
The plate 2 is provided with a shaped guide 6 and a pivot i for articulation of a rocking lever'fl which is actuated at by link It hinged at 9 to the lever B and at H to an operating arm rocking about a stationary pivot l3.
The rocking lever 8 further carries a pivot M for oscillation of two arms carrying the nippers, namely, an arm l5 carrying the top nipper l6 and at its opposite end a roller [1 rolling within the guide 6, and an arm i=8 carrying the bottom nipper i 9 and at its opposite end an extension 20 supporting one end of a coiled spring 2 I, the other end of which bears on a projection 22 on the rocking lever.
The arm I8 is provided with an extension 23 having screwed therein a bolt 24 abutting at its end a surface 25 on the rocking lever 8.
The movement of the operating lever l2 rocks through the link ID the lever 8 about the stationary pivot T. The two arms l5, l8 carrying nippers are thereby moved in the direction of the arrow Ma together with the pivot [4 of the rocking lever B. The nippers remain closed over the first section of the stroke under the action of the spring 2! which pushes the bottom nipper against the to one till the end of the bolt 24, which has been suitably adjusted, abuts the surface 25. The nippers then begin to open.
The path followed by the ends of the nippers I6, I 9 depends upon the shape of the guide 6. The path is in the form of an arc of a circle having its centre on the axis of the rotating comb P, as long as the nippers remain closed. As soon as the nippers open, the bottom nipper l9 performs an arc of a circle l9a having its centre on the axis of the pivot I, for the arm l8 carrying the nipper remains fixedly connected with the rocking lever 8 under the action of the spring 2| which has pushed the bolt 24 against the check surface 25.
The 6 draws the 1101') nirmnv nnmv wa its opposite 'end attached 26 of the arm 15 between two rollers 21, 28 rotat-- ing about pivots 29, 30 carried by the plate 2. By suitably shaping the extension Zfiit is possible to move the nippers l6, 19 along the above. dc.- scribed paths.
What I claim is:
1. A combing machine comprising, in combination with a circular comb and with detaching rollers, a lever adapted to be rocked abouta stationary axis, two scissor-like arms pivotally conthe upper nipper is quickly drawn away by the guide means from said lower nipper.
2. A combing machine according to claim 1, in which said guide means comprise a stationary cam and a roller adapted to engage said cam, said roller being mounted on the arm carrying the upper nipper.
3. A combing machineas claimed in claim 1, in which saidguide meanscomprise a pair. of guide rollers mounted on stationary pivots and a shaped extension of the arm carrying the upper nipper and adapted to engage said rollers.
4. Acombing machine as claimed in claim 1 comprisingin addition a plate carrying said lever to be rocked about a stationary axis and said means, for guiding-the arm carrying the upper nected with said lever, an upper nipper carried by one of said armsha lower nipper carried by the other arm, means for guiding the arm carry-v ing the upper nipper to cause the same to travel along a pathcoinciding with an arc of circle having its center, onthe axis. of the circular comb for the period during which the nippers are closed within the range of the circular comb, a spring between said lever and the arm carrying the lowerjnipper for maintainingthe nippersclosed andan adjustable stop member carried by said arm and. engaging said lever to permit the opening of the nippers, when the latter are drawn towards said detaching rollers, the lower nipper travelling upon opening along an arc of a circle havingits center on the axis of said lever, while nipper, said plate being pivoted to the axis of said circular comb; whereby a slight rotation of the plate efiects adjustment of the spacing between the lower nipper .and detaching rollers withoutv varying the width, of, the movement. of the nippers.
