This invention relates to floor conditioning or waxing machines, the primary object of the invention being to provide a machine which is so constructed and arranged that it may be used in distributing liquid or paste wax onto a floor surface for conditioning the floor surface.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a rapidly rotating brush onto which the wax is fed, and carried to the floor surface, the machine also including a polishing brush rapidly rotating and following the applicator brush to properly polish the floor and to direct the wax into the pores of the floor.
A. still further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the quantity of wax delivered to the applicator brush will be controlled by the hand of the operator gripping the handle of the device in moving the wax over the floor surface under treatment.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view on line l--l of Fig. 2 through the waxing machine constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a elevational view of the handle of the machine, a portion of the handle having been cut away illustrating the construction of the control member.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View through the vertical movable shaft on which the applicator brush is mounted.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the machine comprises a body portion indicated generally by the reference character 5. As shown the body portion is provided with vertical partitions 6 and i that divide the body portion into a central motor compartment 8 in which the motor 9 is mounted, and brush compartments l and H.
Mounted within the brush compartment I0 is the polishing brush I2 mounted on the shaft l3 secured to the pivoted arms l4.
At one end of the polishing brush I 2 is a pulley l over which the belt It operates, the belt I6 also operating over the pulley ll operated by the electric motor.
At the opposite side of the housing, and disposed within the compartment is the rotary applicator brush [8 mounted on the shaft H] extended between the arms 20 that are pivotally mounted within the compartment II.
The bearings 21 in which the shafts 22 and 23 operate, are mounted in the vertically elongated bearing openings, formed in the side walls of the body portion or housing 5. Thus, it will be noted that by raising or lowering the arms 26 the applicator brush may be moved into and out of contact with the floor surface.
Mounted within the compartment l I, and disposed directly above the brush i8, is the container 24, especially designed for containing paste wax, the container 24 having discharge openings 25, through which paste from the container 2-; may pass to the applicator brush to be spread over the fioor surface.
Operating within the container 24, is the follower 25, which follower is pivotally connected with the arm 2'! through the medium of links 28, which are shown as pivotally connected with the arm 2?. This arm 27 is pivotally connected to the partition 5, and extends to a point within the motor compartment. Connected with the inner end of the arm 2V is a cable 29 that extends to a point adjacent to the handle 3% disposed on the upper end of the arm 35. The cable 29 connects with the plunger 32 that is formed with a finger piece 33 which extends through the slot 34, formed in the hollow end 35 of the arm 3|. Thus it will be seen that when the operator grips the handle 30 in moving the machine over the floor surface, the operator may by inserting his finger in the finger piece 33, move one end of the arm 27 upwardly, causing the link 28 to move downwardly, which forces the follower 26 against the wax in the container 24, forcing the wax onto the brush I8. Coiled spring 35 connects with the arm 27 and has one end anchored to the frame, the spring acting to normally return the arm 21 to the position as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings.
On one end of the shaft [9 is the pulley 3! over which the belt [6 operates which belt also operates over the pulley 15 mounted on the brush shaft 13, so that the brushes l2 and I 8 will be rotated to accomplish the purpose of the invention.
Mounted within the motor compartment 8, is the tank 38 formed with an opening through which liquid wax is directed into the tank, the opening being closed by means of the screw cap 39. Communicating with the bottom of the tank 38, are pipes 40 and 4| which extend downwardly therefrom, the pipes ill and :ii extending into the distributing tank 12, which is disposed in proximity to the applicator brush Hi to deliver liquid wax thereto through the openings 43. In the bottom of the tank 38 is an opening is against which the valve 95 seats controlling the passage of liquid wax from the tank 38. Valve 45 is carried at the lower end of the rod 45 that extends through an opening in the top of the tank 38 and passes into the cylinder :i'! thatprovides a housing for the coiled spring '28 that rests against the pin 49 which is secured to the rod 45, the sprin acting to normally urge the valve 5 to its closed position. The upper end of the rod 46 is pivotally connected with the lever 59 mounted on the upper surface of the body portion or housing 5, the lever having a cam edge designed to engage the top of the body portion to elevate the rod 4t and valve 45, releasing wax into the distributing tank 42,
when the lever 59 is moved to the position shown I in dottedlines in Fig. l of the drawings.
In order that access may be had to the brush compartment ii, the pivoted closure Si is provided, which may be moved to an open position on its hinge when it is desired to service the brush or refill the container 2d.
The closure is provided at the opposite side of the body and may be swung to its open position to gain access to the interior of the body portion. 7
The reference character 54 indicates a horizontal partition or platform on which the motor 9 is mounted. The partition i is spaced from the end walls of the body portion to accommodate the wheels 55 on which the waxer is supported.
In order that the material from the container 24 will be properly spread over the brush [9, the flexible spreading blade 55 is secured tothe front lower edge of the container 26, for contact with the wax.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a waxing machine which will carry a supply of liquid wax and paste wax to be transferred to an applicator brush, which in turn spreads the wax over the floor surface being waxed. The machine also acts to polish the wax applied to the floor as the machine is moved over the floor surface.
it might be further stated that because of the structure of the machine, the application of the wax is manually controlled to insure the proper quantity of wax being applied.
