This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined key holder and writing implements.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved combined key holder and writing implement which will firmly hold a pen or pencil or other marking or writing device or instrument conveniently encased but which will assist in the ready and easy removal thereof.
Another object of the invention proposes forming the combined key holder and writing implement with an externally polygonal case adapted to contain a replaceable roll or paper rotatably and having a side slot opening for paper to pass through and be held against the flat sides of the case for writing thereon.
Still further, the present invention proposes constructing the combined key holder and writing implement so that pencils or writing instruments of any diameter can be carried and will be securely retained in the case.
As a further object, the invention proposes arranging the elements of the combined key holder and writing implement in convenient and cooperative relation so that the multiple writing surfaces and the writing instrument are in ready access near an ignition, door or other type key.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
On the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view ofthe combined key holder and writing implement with an end of the case and some internal parts removed.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a spool and outer end section for the case shown in Fig. 1 with a roll of paper on the spool.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the structure shown in Fig. 1 with a ball point pen inserted therein.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the pen shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a pencil holding clamp plate adapted to fit the outer end section of the spool shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, reference numeral l0 designates an elongated case the outside of which is polygonally shaped, hav- 2 ing long transverse flat sides ll, l2, l3, l4, l5 and I6 smooth enough for use as writing surfaces an elongated slot I2 is provided in one of the flat sides for the edge of a paper roll to extend, as will presently be described.
Case Iii, preferably made of plastic, is substantially hollow for its full length having one open end [1 with a round bore [8 extending therefrom into the case and terminating at the closed end 19 of the case.
On the closed end I9 of the case is a ring structure 23 adapted to hold a key 2| (see Fig. 3) as bya split ring 22 or key chain (not shown).
Adjacent the open end l1 of the case, an annular retaining groove 23 is formed in the inner side wall of the case. An annular internal flange 25 extends from the inner side wall 24 of the case into bore 18 near the closed end I 9 of the case forming a chamber 26 of the terminal end of the bore.
A spool 21 (see Fig. 2) also preferably is molded of plastic and is provided with a hollow center section 28 and end sections 29 and 30, each having a central opening 3| and 32 respectively. End section 29 is of a diameter to slidably fit into bore l8 of case I!) and is removably fastened to center section 23 as by threads 33 to permit a roll 34 wound with paper 35 to be inserted on and secured to the center section of the spool. The free end of roll 34 extends through slot l2. The paper is secured to the roll and the roll is secured to the center section of the spool either frictionally or by an adhesive so that by rotating the spool in the proper direction the paper may be rewound. The end section 30 of spool 21 is preferably made of resilient plastic and has a wide rim 36 of the same diameter as end section 23 to fit into bore l8 of case [0. Fixed to and extending through the rim 36 is a circular disc or ring 31 which lies parallel to outer face 39 of end section 30. Disc or ring 31 is of a diameter larger than rim 36 but of the same diameter as case Ill or slightly larger than its inner diameter. The disc or ring 31 has markings or indentations 38 to signify where it can be depressed to cause it to collapse slightly to permit the spool 21 to be removed from the bore l8 of the case It). The outer edge of disc or ring 31 is adapted to fit into retainer groove 23 in inner wall 24 of case It when spool 21 is fully inserted in bore I 8 of the case. An annular flanged shoulder 40 is provided on the outer face 39 of end section 30 adjacent the central opening 32.
The inner edge of disc or ring 31 is positioned 3 to lie normally spaced above the annular shoulder 40.
Finger tabs 4| and 42 extend above and are connected with the rim 36 on end section 30 positioned adjacent the disc or ring 31.
The internal flange 25 extending from inner side wall 24 of case lo bore 18 is provided with a centrally located orifice 42 which is in alignment with the openings through the spool when the spool is held in the here by the retainer bars and retainer groove.
In chamber 26 behind flange 25 at the terminal end of bore [8 and aligned with orifice is an ejector structure 43 comprising a guide 44 extending from the inner wall 45 of chamber 26. an ejector spring 48 and a pusher 4T. Pusher 41 is slidably mounted on guide 44 in any suitable manner with spring 46 fixed to the end of pusher 41 and casing end I9.
Also located in chamber 26 is a locking device which comprises a locking lever "E8 centrally fulcrumed on hinge pin 55] fixed to inner wall 45 of chamber 28 and having a lower end and an upper end 52 extending out of case through a lever opening 53 in the case. ihis end 52 may be knurled and shaped as shown for easy operation. A spring 54 abuts a bearing plate 55 extending from flange in the case and bears against locking lever 48 below its fulcrum point normally biasing the lower end 5i of the lever downwardly.
A ball point pen 55 (see Figs. 3 and 4) having ball shoulders 51 and an annular recess 53 may be put into case it) when spool 27 is in place by first pressing the knurled upper end 52 of locking lever 33 toward the ring structure 20 to raise the lower end of the lever and then inserting the pen point first through the central opening 32 in end section 29 of the spool and through the other aligned openings including orifice 42 in the internal flange 25 until ball point shoulders 51 are stopped by pusher d! of the ejector. The ejector spring is fully compressed when this occurs.
The lever is then released and lower end 5i of the lever is forced by locking spring 54 into the annular recess 53 in the pen to lock the pen in place. The force of spring 54 is not sufficient to eject pusher 47 from the open end of guide 44.
When it is desired to remove the pen, the looking lever is released and the compressed ejector spring forces the pusher 47 against the ball point shoulders 51 on the pen and partially ejects the pen from the case for easier removal.
If it is desired to carry pencils or other type marking devices, the case may be provided with an end section or holding plate '59 made of resilient material, such as hard rubber, and having centrally located cross slit star shaped opening 59 which will permit passage to be forced through but will retain a firm grip on anything pushed through and remaining therein. This section 59 may be fastened removably to the outer face 39 of end section 33 of spool 21 by forcing an annular ring 60 on the rear face El of the end section 59 into the space between the lower ends of retainer bars 3'! and 33 and the annular flanged shoulders 40 on outer face 39.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A holder for a paper strip and a writing implement comprising a hollow casing including a slot, a spool adapted to hold a roll of paper slidably received in said case, said spool including end rims, and a ring secured on one of said end rims, said ring being of larger diameter than the spool and of the same diameter as said hollow case to seat thereon, said ring locking the spool in the casing.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said end rim has an annular flanged shoulder, said shoulde'r extending through said ring, and means to depress said ring slightly to permit the spool to be removed from the casing.
3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said end rim has an annular flanged shoulder, said shoulder extending through said ring, finger tabs extended above and connected to said rim adjacent the ring, and means to depress said ring slightly to permit the spool to be removed from the casing.
