forming devices for sewing machines, and the principal object of the invention is to provide what could be called a center or a fulcrum about which work may be turned or rotated while zigzag stitches are bein made around the edge of the eyelet with the sewing machine needle.

Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its adaptability to convenient and expeditious attachment to the work supportin platform of a sewing ma chine, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a sewing machine showing the invention applied thereto;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view, taken substantially upon the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1 and illustrating the work applied to the machine; and

Figure 3 is a perspective View of the attachment per se.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the general reference character it designates a conventional sewin machine provided with a conventional zigzag attachment l2 carrying a needle M which is recip-rocable vertically as well as laterally in a conventional manner.

The instant invention resides in the provision of an eyelet forming attachment which is designated generally by the reference character I 6 and is adapted to be positioned on the work supporting platform 58 of the sewing machine under the needle M as will be presently described.

The platform is is provided with the usual opening 26 through Which the needle I4 may project downwardly into the bobbin (not shown), and access to the bobbin is usually had by the provision of a sliding panel 22 which constitutes a portion of the platform I8.

The eyelet forming attachment 56 consists of a plate 24 having a raised intermediate portion 24a and depressed end portions 25, Eta, the portion 26a. being provided with a detent in the form of a spring clip 28 which is adapted to be inserted in an aperture 36 with which the platform I8 is customarily equipped.

The portion 26 of the plate 2 1 is provided with a plurality of down turned fingers 32 and a pair of detents in the form of resilient clips 36, these fingers and clips being intended for reception in a slot 38 which is formed in the platform I8 when the panel 22 is slid to a partly open position, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.

An upstanding boss 4!] is provided centrally on the upraised portion 24a of the plate 21! and is formed in one side thereof with a vertically extending slot 32, while an elongated slot or recess it is provided in the plate portion 24a in communication with the lower end of the slot 42 in the boss ill.

When the invention is placed in use and is applied to the work supporting platform of the sewing machine as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the work 55, clamped in the usual frame 43, is formed with an eyelet aperture 50 in which to accommodate the upstanding boss 40 of the attachment. The slot 42 and the recess li are of such size that the needle It may reciprocate laterally therein, and as the zigzag motion is imparted to the needle, continuous zigzag stitches will be formed on the work at the edge of the opening 5|) while the frame :18, together with the work, is rotated about the axis of the boss M.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combina tion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
