INVENTOR ARTHUR E. SINGLE TON jmm ATTORNEY Patented May 25,. 1954 DEFLECTOR FOR INFANTS TOILET SEATS Arthur E. Singleton, Fort Wayne, Ind, assignor to The Toidey Company, Gertrude A. Muller, Inc., Fort Wayne, Ind., a corporation of Indiana Application February 1, 1951, Serial No. 208,929
7 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in a deflector for infants toilet seats adapted for attachment selectively to either the open or closed front infants seats.
Generally, deflectors that are detachably mounted on infants seats are subjected to dislodgment by the occupant of the seat during play, or otherwise, incapacitating the deflector by rough usage.
An object of the instant invention is to afford a sanitary deflector that is readily attachable to or detachable from the ordinary infants toilet seat of either the closed or open front types, and to provide an element for substantially securing the deflector in place upon the childs seat.
Another object of the invention is to provide a deflector so formed as to be conveniently inserted into the front of the infants seat from the seat opening therein, pressed into place, and then substantially secured in position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention appear in the following description.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a structure including a deflector in which the invention is incorporated and a fragmentary part of an infants seat upon which the deflector is positioned;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, in section on the line 2-2 thereof;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of the deflector;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View of Fig. 2 on the line 4-4 thereof.
Fig. 5 is a top plan View of the deflector positioned on a fragment of an infants toilet seat of the open front type; and
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the structure shown in Fig. 5.
The instant invention is a deflector attachment for an infants toilet seat and consists preferably of an unitary body shaped to have an upwardly extending deflector 6, the inner face of which has a cavity 1 therein and a downwardly projecting extension constituting a drain 8 for the deflector.
The body has a foldable flap 9 that extends along the sides of the deflector and forwardly from the front thereof, and a ledge it extends forwardly from the body in a plane parallel with and spaced below the flap.
The flap and the ledge are each provided with mating snap fasteners I! and I2 which are connected together when the flap is folded over onto the bottom face of the ledge.
When the deflector is in position on an infants toilet seat is the flap 9 overlies the top of the seat while the ledge iii underlies the bottom of the seat, and there is a pocket it formed in the deflector body for the reception of a crosspiece E5 of the seat when a seat of the closed front type is used. When the flap and ledge are secured together by the snap fasteners the crosspiece of the seat is completely encompassed and the deflector is thereby held in fixed position on the seat.
When a seat [3' of the open front type is used, the sides iii of the deflector body bear against the opposing walls I? so the gap is in the seat is bridged by the deflector (i and the pocket is is suspended in the gap. In this instance the flap 9 is folded downwardly beneath the ledge ii! and secured by the snap fasteners as in the former instance while the flap overlies the top of the seat and the ledge underlies the bottom thereof.
Preferably, the body is formed of rubber, plastic or any suitable pliant material such as will permit folding of the flap and wedging of the body into position in the seat. It is also preferable that in applying the body to the seat that the body is moved forwardly from the seat opening I9 and wedged in place whereby it is held by connection of the flap with the ledge and secured by the fasteners. In this manner the deflector body is held in place and prevented from unintentional dislodgment.
By the construction herein disclosed is provided a sanitary shield or deflector that is readily attachable to or removable from an infants toilet seat of either the closed or open front types.
Variations from the particular construction above disclosed may be resorted to by the exercise of skill in the art, without departure from the spirit or scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. An attachment for an infants toilet seat formed of pliant material shaped to have an upwardly extending deflector and a downwardly projecting drain contiguous with said deflector, said attachment having a flexible flap extending along its sides and forwardly from the front thereof and which lies normally in the plane of the top of the seat when the attachment is positioned thereon, a ledge forming part of the attachment extending parallel with and spaced below said flap in the plane of the bottom of said seat. and mating fasteners on said flap and ledge adapted to be connected together when said flap is folded down over the front of the seat and beneath the ledge, whereby to secure said attachment on said seat.
2. An attachment for an infants toilet seat shaped to have an upwardly extending deflector and a downwardly projecting drain contiguous with said deflector, a foldable flap extending along each side of the attachment and forwardly from the front thereof and which overlies the top of the seat when positioned thereon and having a forwardly extending ledge that underlies the bottom of said seat, a pocket formed in the attachment between said flap and ledge for reception of the portion of the cross-piece adjacent the toilet seat opening in the front part of said seat, and mating fasteners on said flap and ledge adapted to be secured together when said flap is folded over the front of the seat and under the ledge whereby to hold said attachment in place.
3. An attachment for an infants toilet seat, said attachment having an upwardly extending deflector and a downwardly projecting drain contiguous with said deflector and having a foldable flap that overlies the top of the seat when the attachment is positioned thereon and hav ing a forwardly extending ledge that underlies the bottom of the seat, and means for connecting said flap and ledge when the flap is folded over the front of the seat whereby to hold the attachment in place.
4. An infants toilet seat attachment having an upwardly extending deflector and downwardly extending drain contiguous therewith, said at tachment having members that respectively overlie and underlie the forward part of the infants seat when positioned thereon and being of sufiicient width as to bridge the gap in the forward part of said seat, one of said members being foldable over the front of the seat to embrace said front, and. means for attaching said members together thus to hold said attachment in place.
5. An infants toilet seat attachment in which is included a vertically extending deflector, a forwardly extending foldable flap and a forwardly extending ledge, said flap and ledge being adapted respectively to overlie and underlie the top and bottom of the forward part of the infants seat, and mating fasteners on said flap and ledge adapted to secure them together when said flap is folded over the front of said seat, thus to secure said attachment in place.
6. A deflector adapted to be detachably secured to the inside front portion of a toilet seat having an opening therein and comprising an upwardly extending cup-shaped member and a downwardly extending drain portion, two forwardly extending ledges carried intermediate the cup-shaped member and said drain portion, one of said ledges being a flexible flap of sufficient length to embrace the front portion of the toilet seat, means provided on both ledges to detaohably secure said one ledge in place over said toilet seat front portion for securing said deflector in position, and a conforming pocket provided in the deflector toward the rear of said ledges for receiving corresponding portions of the toilet seat whereby the deflector is positively located in position.
'7. A deflector adapted to be detaohably secured to the inside front portion of a toilet seat having an opening therein and comprising an upwardly extending cup-shaped member and a downwardly extending drain portion, two forwardly extending ledges carried intermediate the cup-shaped member and said drain portion, one of said ledges being a flexible flap of suflicient length to embrace the iront portion of the toilet seat, and a fastener provided on both ledges for detachably securing said one ledge in place over said toilet seat front portion whereby said deflector may be secured in position.
