FIG. 4
Patented May 4, 1954 one PORTABLE SUPPORT FOR PUNGHING BAGS Leonard F. Ross, Philadelphia, Pa.
Application April 21, 1953, Serial No. 350,117
1 Claim. 1
My invention relates to a portable and adjustable support for a punching bag.
The object of the invention is to produce an improved support which is rigid and relatively inexpensive and one which can be adjustahly mounted on a horizontal or on a vertical support.
The full nature of the invention will be under stood from the following specification and the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig, 1 is a perspective view showing my improved support applied to a door jamb.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing my im proved support applied to a horizontal support.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View looking in the direction of line 33 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view looking in the direction of line lt on Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view looking in the direction of line 55 on Fig. 4.
The support includes a rod one portion l2 of which is threaded and the other portion Id of which is unthreaded. The threaded portion 12 has a smaller diameter than the unthreaded portion It whereby a shoulder IE5 is formed, and is provided with a fiat surface 118. The end of unthreaded portion M is reduced to form a smooth, unthreaded hub 29 which is again reduced to form a threaded portion 22.
The support further includes a pair of plates 24 and 26 which are adapted to engage, therebetween, a horizontal table, shelf, or the like 28, as in Figs. 2 and 4-, or a vertical porch column or the vertical jamb of a door, or the like, 3&3. Each of the plates 2d and 26 is provided with an opening 32 which is also provided with a flat surface M (Fig. 5) which corresponds to the fiat surface it of rod portion 12. The openings 32 are such that the plates 24 and 26 can slide freely on threaded rod portion E2.
The hub 20 is adapted to support a rotatable member 36 which is freely rotatable on this hub and which is retained in position by a nut or the like iii. The collar 35 is provided with a hole 38 adapted to be detachably engaged by a snap hook carried by a punch bag M. To clamp plate 2% against the support 28 or 36, I provide a threaded nut 32 which is preferably provided with a handle M.
To set up the support so that the punch bag will rotate about a vertical axis. as in Figs. 2 and d, the plate 2:3 is moved up on threaded rod portion l2 until it abuts shoulder it. The device is now presented to the edge of a horizontal support 28 and the plate 241 is brought to rest on the upper face of said support. The plate 26 is next slipped over the rod portion i2 and the nut M is threaded onto rod portion 52 and rotated until it abuts the underside of plate 2t and presses it upwardly against the support 28 and the upper plate 24. The punching bag is then detachably engaged with collar 36 by means of a hook, not shown, which is carried by the bag. When the bag is punched it will rotate about the vertical axis of the rod as shown in Fig. 4.
To set up the stand so that the bag will rotate about a horizontal axis, the plates 24 and 26 are similarly clamped onto the vertical jamb of a door or onto a partition, or vertical porch column, or the like, at a height suitable to the party who wishes to use it. The bag thus mounted will rotate about the horizontal axis of the rod as viewed in Fig. 3.
To provide a better grip and to guard against damaging the surface of the support, the engaging sides of plates 2d and 26 are provided with felt or rubber linings 46.
What I claim is:
A portable support for a punching bag, said support including a rod having one portion thereof threaded and the other portion thereof unthreaded, said unthreaded portion being of a larger diameter whereby a shoulder is formed at the junction of said portions, said threaded portion having a flat surface portion extending lengthwise thereof, a pair of clamping plates adapted to clamp a horizontal or a vertical support therebetween, each of said plates having an opening therein of the same shape as said threaded portion and freely slidable thereon, said opening being too small for the passage of said shoulder therethrough, a nut engageable with said threaded portion for urging said plates and the support therebetween against said shoulder, and a collar freely rotatable on said unthreaded portion and having a hole formed therein adapted to be engaged by book on the punch bag.
