To all lwhom tt may concern:

Be it known that LEDWAED T.WoLcoTT, of Kenosha, in the county ot' Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Im- 5 proved Wire Mattress, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

`It is well known that Wire mattresses after being used for some time become sagged in the center, making the bed unpleasant and uncom- Io fortable to lie upon.

The object of my invention is to provide a mattress that will not sag, but retain its even surface and elasticity.

My invention consists in elastic supporting:

15 springs stretched diagonally across the mattress-frame from corner to corner immediately under the mattress, so as to provide an extra amount of strength at the center ot' the mattress at the point where the greatest weight 2o rests.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the figure isaplan View ot' mylimproved mattress, a part being broken away to show z5 the supporting-springs.

A is the frame of the mattress, consisting of the side bars, a a, and the end bars, b b,the end bars being secured on the top of the ends ofthe side bars, a a, by the boltsc7 the space 3e between the side bars a and the mattress prowviding for the depression of the mattress when weight is placed upon it.

B is the mattress, made of spring-wire and of any of the usual well-known forms. The

| the ends of the wires being bent down and placed between the cleats and the end bars, where they arermlyheld by the cleats, which are securely nailed or screwed to the end bars. 4o

VBetween the diagonal corners of the frame A are stretched elastic springs C (l. These springs may be made of any suitable elasticv material, but are preferably made of springsteel wire. rIlle springs C C, as shown, are 45 composed of a series ot' spirally-coled wires, placed side by side, to form one continuous spring. The ends ofthe springs C C are clamped and firmly held. between the end bars,

b b, and the cleats d d at diagonally-opposite corners of the frame A, and by their elasticity serve to support the mattress B in the center of its length and width, where the greatest weight of the body ofa person rests when lying on the bed. 55

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l As anew article ofmanuacture, a bed consisting ot' a rectangular frame having support- 6o ing-springs stretched from corner to corner, and covered with a wire mattress, substantially as shown and specified.

2. The combination, with a spring-mattress suspended from end bars b, of frame A, ot' the 65 diagonal-crossing.springs C O, formed of spirally-coled wires, as shown and described.
