ADJUSTABLE FRAME FOR BEDS Filed May 5, 1949 l|| :III
' INVENTOR. VERLA/VD LO/VGNECKER A T TOPNE Y Patented Apr. 13, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADJUSTABLE FRAME FOR BEDS Verland Longnecker, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application May 5, 1949, Serial No. 91,441
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to beds and more especially to a frame construction that is adjustable as to size.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and efficient frame construction for beds that is adjustable to various sizes, either as to width or length.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel bed frame structure which may be used with various sizes of springs and mattresses.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel frame structure for association with detached headboards wherein a single size frame may be extended to a three-quarter size, full size, or over-size.
An additional object of the invention is to provide novel improvements in a bed frame structure wherein the frame is adjustable as to width and wherein is provided a plurality of legs in addition to the usual corner legs.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a bed frame embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation view of the same as seen from the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing I show a bed frame having a pair of side rails l and II, a brace structure l2 being secured to side rail I0, and a brace structure I3 being secured to side rail ll.
Brace structure l2 comprises a pair of members l4 and brace structure l3 comprises a pair of members l5, members [4 and I5 being secured respectively to the ends of members I0 and H as by bolts I6 and additionally by brackets l1 secured thereto as by bolts 18, the brackets also being bolted or otherwise secured to side rails l0 and H.
The members M of each brace structure are joined at their opposite ends by bracket 19. Brackets I! are formed to comprise legs to which may be secured casters 2| of conventional or suitable character. Brackets iii are formed with leg portions 22 having casters 23. Members l4 and I5 are provided with apertures 24 and adapted to be secured together by bolts and these members are also provided with apertures 25 through which the bolts may be placed.
The operation of the invention which is an improvement over my co-pending application, Serial No. 52,700, filed October 4, 1948, should be apparent from the foregoing description. The
frame structures I2 and [3, when secured together by the bolts extending through apertures 24 as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, provide a bed frame of the usual single bed size. If new a larger size bed frame is desired, the frame structures may be secured together by the bolts extending through apertures 25, as indicated by the dotted line position in Fig. 1. It will be obvious that any plurality of holes 24 or 25 may be provided so as to constitute a bed frame of any desired size.
As should be clear from the drawing the brackets I9 and legs 22 provide additional and intermediate support for the bed frame and any tendency of the frame to sag is prevented. Frame members I0, H, M and I5 are shown as being made of angle irons, however other sections may be utilized if desired, such as tubular. If the latter shape is used it will be necessary to flatten the sections to permit the crossing of members l4 and I5 for the inner connecting bolts, or the sections may be otherwise bent to permit this inner connection.
It will be understood that the foregoing description is illustrative rather than restrictive of my invention and that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the sub-joined claim.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
An adjustable width bed frame as described, comprising in combination, a pair of parallel bar members having legs at their ends, and a V- shaped brace structure extending from each bar member, said structures being mutually overlapping and adjustably secured together, and a leg secured to each brace structure at a point remote from its bar.
