Member 21 is attached to the table It surrounding the heating member and spaced therefrom. The roller 26 is journaled in cover member 21. The cover member 21 is provided with a slot 28 in the side thereof opposite the open side of the channel-shaped upper portion 2! of the heat transfer member. The slot 28 is used for threading the tape through the heat transfer unit. A roller 29 is journaled in the upper end of tubular cover 2! to guide the tape as the tape leaves the top of the heat transfer member. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the tape makes a quarter turn inside the heat transfer member and leaves the heat transfer member and the tubular cover thereof closely spaced from presser foot I! so that, once the tape is heated by passing above heating element 14, the tape is maintained hot by the heat transfer member and reaches presser foot ll in heated condition.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the machine is provided with a cover member 3| which is hinged to an auxiliary tape receptacle 32. The cover includes an inverted channel-shaped portion 33 which fits over the flanges of the tape guiding channel In as shown most clearly in Fig. 5. The flanges of cover portion 33 are spaced from the flanges of guide [8 to provide an insulating air space therebetween. In addition, an insulating pad 34 of asbestos or the like is attached to the web of cover 33 as shown in Fig. 5, to insulate the cover.

When auxiliary tape receptacle 32 is in use, an idle roll 34 may be attached to cover 3| for guiding tape from the auxiliary roll into the space above heating element 14. The roll 34 may be removed when tape is fed from below the table 16 from the roll 13.
The heating element 14 may be provided with a rheostat 36 as indicated in Fig. 1, by means of which the heating element may be adjusted. In addition, appropriate thermostatic controls, not shown, may be incorporated in the heating element for controlling the heat thereof.
The tape heater, described above and illustrated in the drawing, is subject to structural modification without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A tape heater for a machine for dispensing thermally responsive tape of the thermoplastic and pressure sensitive type, which comprises an elongated hollow, substantially horizontal tape guide, a flat elongated heating element in the lower portion of the tape guide, a heat transfer member of heat conductive material attached to the heating element at one end of the guide and extending upwardly therefrom to the foot of a tape applying machine, said heat transfer member comprising a substantially horizontal bottom portion'of U-shape in section embracing the heating element to be heated vbythe same, an upper portion of upright, channelshape spaced above the bottom portion and facing away from the tape guide and an intermediate plate portion connecting the bottom and upper portions guide, means for guiding at one side of the tape guide, and means for guiding the tape through the tape guide and. up between the fianges of the channel of the heat transfer member and spaced from the web and flanges thereof for heating the tape as the tape is delivered to the tape applying machine.
2. A tape heater for a machine for dispensing thermally responsive tape of the thermoplastic and pressure sensitive type which comprises an elongated hollow, substantially horizontal tape guide, a flat elongated heating element in the lower portion of the tape guide, a heat transfer member of heat conductive material attached to the heating element at said end of the guide and extending upwardly therefrom to the foot of a tape applying machine, said heat transfer member comprising a bottom portion embracing the heating element, an upper portion of upright channel shape spaced above the bottom portion and facing away from the tape guide, and an intermediate portion connecting the bottom and the upper portions at one side of the tape guide, and means for guiding the tape through the tape guide and up through the channel of the heat transfer member for heating the tape as the tape is delivered to the tape applying machine, said guiding means comprising a roller journaled adjacent the lower end of the upper portion of the heat transfer member.

A tape heater for a machine for dispensing thermally responsive tape of the thermoplastic and pressure sensitive type which comprises an elongated hollow, substantially horizontal tape guide, a flat elongated heating element in the lower portion of the tape guide, a heat transfer member of heat conductive material attached to the heating element at said end of the guide and extending upwardly therefrom to the foot of a tape applying machine, said heat transfer member comprising a bottom portion embracing the heating element, an upper portion of upright channel shape spaced above the bottom portion and an intermediate portion connecting the bottom and upper portions at one side of the tape the tape through the tape guide and up through the channel of the heat transfer member for heating the tape as the tape is delivered to the tape applying machine, and a hollow, protective cover surrounding the heat transfer member, said cover being provided with a slot extending the length thereof opposite the open side of the channel for threading the upper portion of the heat transfer memher.

For use with a stitching machine a tape magazine and guide comprising means for holding a spool of tape, said tape having one of its faces coated with a thermoplastic adhesive, an elongated tape heating tunnel oven, a chimney extending upward from one end thereof, an aperture in the floor of said oven adjacent the end thereof spaced from said chimney, heat producing means disposed on and substantially covering the floor of said tunnel oven, said heat producing means being spaced below and extending across the mouth of said chimney to a point adjacent said aperture in the oven floor, a tape supporting guide roll adjacent said aperture, a tape hold-down guide roll adjacent the base of said chimney and spaced above. said heat producing means, a tape supporting guide roll adjacent the top of said chimney, said aperture and guide rolls being adapted to co-operate with a tape as described to substantially limit such a tape to a predetermined path through said oven and-chimney, a heat conducting member provided with a substantially tubular portion adapted to receive and engage the portion of said heat producing means disposed adjacent the chimney end of said oven, said member extending into said chimney and having a channel-shaped portion thereof on one face of said tape may be rendered sticky by heating said tape and may be delivered hot from the chimney mouth without said sticky face contacting any other surface while sticky.
5. A device according to claim 4 characterized by he fact that said tunnel oven is provided tape passes and that in said chimney a. second slot is provided joining said first slot and said open tunnel oven end and in registry with the channel in said heat conducting member whereby threading of tape through said guide and heating means is facilitated.
