Th tool d'stiibei in the t'teseitt ifw'htioh i5 particularly designed for use in connection with tile having right angular flanges along the side edges thereof. Several forms of this type of the tile are shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 32,127, filed June 10, 1948, of which the present application-is a-division. An example of such tile is shown in Fig. 3 in which the tile 53 is formed with a main or outer surface 54, inclined portions 55, four edges is provided with a flange, two of which are illustrated at 59 and formed with a plurality of holes such as 6| which form a weakened line extending longitudinally of the flanges, that is, parallel to the edge of the flange, parallel to the junction of the flange with the inclined portion and parallel with the edge of the main surface.

The tile is to be secured in grooves preformed in the wall or the foundation sheet which is to besecured to the wall. The wall or foundation sheet I8 is formed. with a plurality of horizontal parallel grooves ll, l2, l3 and 14 which are intersected by a plurality of vertical parallel grooves 15A, 16B, 16C, IBD andlfiE, all perpendicular to the first mentioned set of grooves. Preferably these grooves are of the dovetail. type as shown in Fig. 5, forming undercut shoulders 58', bevelled portions 48 on the outer surface,and the walls 49 forming the neck to the dovetail portion being at substantially right angles to the outer main surfaceof the wall.
The flanges, such as 58 and 50, on all four edges of the tile 54 are resiliently gripped by the levers 86, 81, 88 and 89. The tile and tool are then placed over the wall with the flanges and. the extending portions of the levers of the tool into the appropriate groove such as, for example, grooves I2, I60, 13 and l6D. Force i'sthen exerted downwardly on the tool through the handle H4, as viewed in Fig. 5, and simultaneously, the pin H2 is pulled toward the handle H4. This raises the sleeve Ill and the collar I89, causing spreading of the toggle links 185, I01, I88 and i in and consequently spreading the pivots of the levers 86, 81, 88 and 89. This s'preadingbf the pivots H8 of the levers will cause the levers to pivot about the plate 8|, whereby the outwardly extending or free ends of the levers will be forced inwardly with the consequent result of the flanges on the tile being bent toward one anotherxinto locking engagement with the shoulders 58 of the dovetail grooves. The weakened portions of the flanges are substantially parallel with the lower edge of the wall 49 of the neck of the groove. The tile is preferably formed of a ductile metal which, after being bent into ,firmand snug relation with the shoulders 50, remains in gripping relation with the shoulder. I
After a tile is secured in position,'as previously described, the operator releases the pin H2 and the spring H6 forces the sleeves Ill and I89 downwardly (as viewed in Fig. 2) and then the tool is withdrawn.
The present invention. is particularly suitable as a tool for carrying out'the invention'described in the parent application Serial No. 32,127, filed June 10, 1948. Obviously from'the 'foregoing, all four flanges of the tile are clamped in position simultaneously. '4 ferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow:
I claim:
1. A tool for securing a tile to a wall or similar surface, comprising a bodyhaving a bottom surface for abutting the outer face ofthe tile to be secured in position, said body having a pair of slots adjacent opposite edges of said bottom surface of the body; a pair of levers fulcrumed in the slot, one of said levers extending from above said bottom surface, through one of the slots and extending below said bottom surface, the other lever being similarly positioned with respect to the other of said slots; a post secured a handle on the top of the post; a sleeve mounted for longitudinal slidable movement on and'guided by the post, the top of the sleeve terminating below the handle thereby providing clearance for upward sliding of the sleeve on the post and the bottom of the sleeve terminating below the top of the levers; toggle links pivotally connected with the upper parts of the levers and pivotally connected to the bottom of the sleeve, the last mentioned pivotal connections lying in a horizontal plane below the first mentioned pivotal connections, said toggle links being thereby adapted to actuate the levers for moving the lower ends of the levers toward one another upon upward sliding of the sleeve; and a handle for pulling the sleeve upwardly.
2. A tool for securing a tile to a wall or similar surface, comprising ,a body having a bottom surface for abutting the outer face of the tile to be secured in position, said body having a pair of slots adjacent opposite edges of said bottom surface of the body; a pair of levers fulcrumed in the slot, one of said levers extending from above said bottom surface, through one of the slots and extending below said bottom surface, the otherlever being similarly positioned with respect to the other of said slots; a post secured substantially centrally of the body and extending upwardly of the body; a handle on the top of the post; a sleeve mounted for longitudinal slidable movement on and guided by the post, the to of the sleeve terminating below the handle thereby providing clearance for upward slid ing of the sleeve on the post and the bottom of the sleeve terminating below the top of the levers; toggle links pivotally connected with the upper parts of the levers and pivotally connected to the bottomof the sleeve, the last mentioned pivotal connections lying in a horizontal plane below the first mentioned pivotal connections, said toggle links being thereby adapted to actuate the levers for moving the lower ends of the levers toward one another upon upward sliding of the sleeve; a spring interposed between the post and sleeve yieldingly urging the sleeve downwardly; and a handle forpullingthe sleeve upwardly.
